Severn - thanks very much. The band is called Canal Street String Band and we'll be playing a concert for the Folklore Soc of Greater Washington on Nov 17. In conjunction with that, I was fishing around for a Baltimore gig but unsure of where to look. A musician friend (Brad Kolodner) suggested the Cabaret at Germano's on S. High Street, so we now have a gig there on Nov. 15.

To answer your question, we are touring with our show "Folk and Blues Roots of the Grateful Dead" which explores the jug band music, Child ballads, old folk songs, blues, and honky tonk music that inspired Jerry Garcia and company - we're doing that show in Baltimore.

For the FSSGW, we're doing a straight concert of American folk music, including canal songs, sea shanties, cowboy songs, western swing, fiddle tunes and several original instrumentals.

Dave,

What sort of music does your band do or are interested in?

For the singer/songwriters there is The Baltimore Songwriters Association, They have their own open mics, so check out their site for original music.

The local folk organization is the Baltimore Folk Music Society (BFMS). Go to their site and find out what's happening on their calendar. The scene up there is much more oriented toward dancing and house concerts. They have an excellent open sing, a bit more tradition oriented, but not exclusively so, on the third Thursday of the month at Guitars Of Pikesville in Pikesville MD.

The shanty sing, sponsored by Ship's Company, the shantymen for the USS Constellation which is anchored in Baltimore Harbor, is held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Wharf Rat pub on Ann Street in the Fells Point area of Baltimore, with other shanty sings scattered about MD, VA and DC so there'll be one a week somewhere. Check the shipscompany.org site for details.

There is a Baltimore Blues Society.

There's a lot more singing activity down in the Washington DC area. The Folklore Society of Greater Washington is a much larger organization. Go to fsgw.org to access their newsletter and calendar on line.

My only experience is the Shanty Session in a bar called The Wharf Rat
which I found very enjoyable .

I'd love to hear from anyone with experience performing for folk/listening audiences in the Baltimore MD area. My band will be making our way down there in November and I have some questions...

Thanks!
