And I'd like to point out that it wasn't Jeff who requested to sing several songs back to back -- it was a request TO Jeff...from Dianne (I think) and the rest of us. And Jeff graciously complied.

It's always a treat to have Jeff at the session. He just got back from South Carolina -- seems he's always off performing somewhere.

Linn-

Excellent work!

With regard to "Jolly Roving Tar," while I was pointing out its origins as a song in the play Old Lavender, produced in 1885, what I sang was a version that has been heavily folk-processed and very close to how most of us now sing the song. The song has been greatly improved from its original lyrics.

As usual, a rather nice session.

The crew was me (Bat Goddess, aka Linn Schulz), Ranger1, Amy, Dianne Lavoie, Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Alan Eaton (after Mudhook's gig at the USS Albacore), Don Hale, Emery Hutchins, Pete Hale (also in town because of the gig on the USS Albacore; had to leave early to work on his porch restoration -- an excused early departure), Bruce MacIntyre, Justine Donovan, Bill Lehrman and Carol Pierson, Gail Finn with her mother, Rita Pomerleau, Phyllis, Carol Coronis, and Jeff Warner. Dave, the reenactor from Kennebunkport, made an appearance (in period garb) to say hi and say he'll be at the festival next week, but he didn't have time for a song.

And what we sang was...
1. Paradise Street - Alan Eaton
2. Cruising 'Round Yarmouth - Linn Schulz
3. A Night At Dago Tom's - Charlie Ipcar
4. Hey, Rain - Hutch
5. Greenland Whale Fisheries [1833, Gale Huntington collection] - Don Hale
6. Bye Bye My Roseanna - Dianne Lavoie
7. Barrett's Privateers - Pete Hale
8. Farewell Tae the Haven - Alan Eaton
9. Bay of Fundy - Bruce MacIntyre
10. Lukey's Boat - Hutch
11. General Taylor - Amy
12. Jolly Roving Tar - Charlie [version from the play "Old Lavender," circa 1885]
13. Home, Dearie, Home - Linn
14. Hills of Isle Au Haut - Dianne
15. Welsh Girls - Pete Hale & Alan Eaton
16. River Lea - Hutch
17. Leaving of Liverpool - Don
18. Help Me To Raise 'Em - Justine Donovan
19. Farewell to Nova Scotia - Bruce
20. Port of Dreams - Charlie
21. West Indies Blues - Hutch
22. Cannery Shed - Linn
23. The Diamond - Bruce
24. The Jeannie C. - Dianne
25. White Squall - Pete
26. Roll the Old Chariot - Hutch
27. Saltpetre Shanty - Justine

29. William Taylor [parody] - Gail Finn
30. Backside of Nantucket Point - Linn

32. Santiano - Carol Coronis (accompanied by a rock 'n' roll drum duet)
33. Grey Funnel Line - Don
34. My Mother Was a Lady - Charlie
35. Bonnie Bunch of Thyme - Dianne
36. Banks of Sicily - Hutch
37. Johnny, Come Down to Hilo - Justine
38. There Is Somebody Waiting For Me - Jeff Warner
39. Her Bright Smile Haunts Me Still - Jeff (he came late so requested to sing several in a row)
40. Northwest Passage - Bruce
41. The Blarney Stone - Rita Pomerleau
42. Sailor's Prayer - Linn
43. Lady Franklin's Lament - Don
44. Hurrah, Sing Fare Ye Well - Jeff
45. Mobile Bay (Roll the Cotton Down) - Charlie

Last night on Nick Noble's "The Folk Revival" radio show on WICN in Worcester, we sang loud enough to be heard in Maine, Kentucky, Colorado, Texas, California, Australia and (I think) China. Another really great live show to promote the Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival and songs of the sea. We had a fantastic time with a group of great performers not only from our Press Room sessions but from other spots in New Hampshire plus local Worcester and other Massachusetts musicians.

This Saturday is another warmup for the festival.

See you then!

Unfortunately, I have an appointment that will end about when the session is starting, but I'm not going to be up to going. (I'm graduating to color this time.)
