Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 01 Nov 16 - 12:51 PM Message from John Barrow, Dick Gaughan's agent and friend: I've already passed your initial payment to Dick - received with very grateful thanks. It's bound to make an enormous difference! Whether the Nov 27 gig will do ditto remains to be seen (so far 512 seats sold @ £25; 1915 capacity). :) I'll let other donations accumulate with your additional recent payment and then bung the lot down the road for DG. It does seem like a high credit card levy @ 32p per payment although if it's 32p on a £50 donation, for example, that's only 0.64%. No new DG news yet. MRI scan about 11 days back and results expected y'day I believe, but I've not heard yet. Please see the topic: Benefit Gig for Dick Gaughan. Once again many many thanks to all those who donated. As above Dick is very grateful. Uncle Tone |

Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 26 Oct 16 - 09:00 PM I have just transferred a further £275.37 into the account for Dick, this being the balance that JustGiving paid me after I queried their figures. I guess that'll be the total now then, less their costs. It does seem that they have charged £180 for card handling over and above their 5%. which works out at about 32p per card for 558 donors. I have asked for an update on Dick's condition. If I get any news I will pass it on here. Tone |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 20 Oct 16 - 01:36 PM £13,229.38 has just been transferred from my account to Dick Gaughan's agent's clients' account. I have just sent the following email to JustGiving: Dear JustGiving £13,229.38 has just been transferred to my account on behalf of Dick Gaughan. JustGiving are supposed to just take 5%. 5% of £14,405 is £720.25 £14,405-£13,229.38 is £1,175.62 It seems that £1.175.62-£720.25 : £455.37 is missing Your terms of reference mention transfer costs being additional. How do you justify over £450 for this over and above your 5%? There are a lot of puzzled donors watching this. yours sincerely Tony Haynes Vale Radio www.vale-radio.com |

Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 14 Oct 16 - 07:15 PM The CrowdFunding page is now closed. The final figure is £14,405 raised by 558 supporters. That is £13,405 more than I initially hoped for! What an amazing response. Thank you everyone who donated so generously! The money, less JustGiving's 5%, will be transferred to Dick within ten working days. I hope he recovers soon and well. He is an international treasure. |

Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 27 Sep 16 - 03:39 PM So, those who are somewhat jealous and proclaim that we should be helping those in need and not the 'famous' need to get their heads around the right way. Really Tone, there was no need for that petty remark. I don't think Megan was in any sense jealous of anything. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: maeve Date: 27 Sep 16 - 10:01 AM Thank you, Jeri. I appreciate that. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Jeri Date: 27 Sep 16 - 09:38 AM Maeve, you're right. I like Megan L, and I know her heart is good. It ruffled my feathers that she chose to complain in this thread, and it sounded like something she probably didn't mean. I didn't expect it to be a "thing". Nobody knows what anyone else gives to other people, and it might be a little difficult to start a campaign for folks who aren't named. Causes, maybe, but not individuals. I suspect a lot of us DO give to causes, and help out in other ways, but we don't talk about it in a specific thread at Mudcat. £11,881 now |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: maeve Date: 27 Sep 16 - 06:25 AM "I think what was said, was that MORE people deserve help." John MacKenzie Yes. I have respect and appreciation for the wonderful musician helped with this donation opportunity. It needs to be said however: the person some are so willing to scold has helped many people. I am one of them. She doesn't make a fuss about it- it's central to her everyday life. Life is hard- let's be kind. Thanks to all who take action to help those in need of help. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,johnmc Date: 27 Sep 16 - 05:02 AM Dick has done countless gigs for good causes and even some to help individuals. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: John MacKenzie Date: 27 Sep 16 - 04:57 AM Nobody said, that anybody didn't deserve help. I think what was said, was that MORE people deserve help. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Stilly River Sage Date: 26 Sep 16 - 09:30 PM What Jeri said. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Jeri Date: 26 Sep 16 - 08:59 PM I'd leave it open for a while. At least wait until some time passes between donation. You were going to close it a few days ago, and somebody gave £500 today, so it may be that some people are just finding out about it. I'd also ignore the critics. You can choose to focus on their belief that Dick doesn't deserve it, or you can know in your heart that you're doing a good thing, focus on that, and let the rest go. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 26 Sep 16 - 07:52 PM Now £11,881. Might just reach £12,000 before we close it? That is probably enough to give Dick a year off to recover from his stroke (if that is what it was, and it does seem so), which is what his agent and I are hoping for. I must add that all those who have given here generously to help Dick through a dark period I am sure support other good causes too. I know I do. I made the first £20 donation here (from my state pension. I get nothing more) and I have raised a few quid for Yorkshire Air Ambulance through folk concerts in the past too. So, those who are somewhat jealous and proclaim that we should be helping those in need and not the 'famous' need to get their heads around the right way. I am for supporting anyone in need as much as I can. I'm certain that all the contributors to this fund think the same according to their needs. What I do question is how much those who have criticised this campaign have actually contributed financially to anything positive themselves. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 25 Sep 16 - 06:41 PM £11,281 and counting. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,kenny Date: 25 Sep 16 - 03:26 PM You sure about that "Modette"? His proposed gig tonight in Belfast appears to have been cancelled, as does the gig due to take place at "Whelan's" in Dublin on Tuesday. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,Modette Date: 25 Sep 16 - 02:23 PM Dick must be in a really bad way as he's only playing three gigs in Ireland this week! |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: John MacKenzie Date: 25 Sep 16 - 01:24 PM What Peter said in his first post is true, and it's not against the rules to comment on peoples giving habits. No disrespect was intended to anyone. It was just a general comment, and 100% accurate too. We all love and respect Dick, but he's as deserving as the next bloke. People will give to this cause, yet not give to any other, and they should. No need to go calling people names |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 25 Sep 16 - 10:57 AM Dick Gaughan is a great artist, and I'm glad to see the success of this campaign I don' think anyone would disagree with that. Best leave it at that. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Jeri Date: 25 Sep 16 - 09:47 AM Megan L wrote "I wish people would give to people who are in need not just those who are well known." I suggest starting a separate thread and not trolling this one. Then YOU start a thread to help those people you want to see helped and not complain because "somebody else" didn't do it. "No gods, and precious few heroes" - don't expect other people to do what you think needs to be done. And I'm out of any debate on this in this thread. Dick Gaughan is a great artist, and I'm glad to see the success of this campaign. Thank you, Uncle Tone. |

Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST Date: 25 Sep 16 - 07:44 AM The second sentence by "Uncle Tone" is equally as true as his first. "I'm sure that many of us who are helping Dick Gaughan over a bad time also donate to other very good causes". |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 25 Sep 16 - 07:26 AM A very short-sighted comment, Megan You may not like the comment, it is not a short sighted one. It is very true. Which doesn't mean this fund isn't worthwhile but let's face it, if a fund had been started for Mr. Whathisface who has been playing music for himself and his neighbours on the back of beyond, nothing even remotely comparable would have been donated. That's just the way it is. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 25 Sep 16 - 06:50 AM A very short-sighted comment, Megan. I'm sue that many of us who are helping Dick Gaughan over a bad time also donate to other very good causes. Fund now stands at over £11,000 |

Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 22 Sep 16 - 08:26 PM £10,098 on day 9!! Target achieved. Fantastic!! Ten times what I originally hoped we raise. When the donations have stopped for 48 hours, I'll close the fund so that the money can be transferred to Dick within ten working days, according to JustGiving. Many, many thanks, everyone! Might have to write a song about this! |

Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 21 Sep 16 - 07:14 AM I'm not a party to Dick's financial status, nor is it my business. I look upon the fund as a bonus, a thank you for everything he has contributed to the folk scene over many many years, an expression of how much folks love and value him and his music, coming in for him when he is unable to perform. To verify this see the comments that are accompanying the donations on the site. Fund for Dick Gaughan |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST Date: 21 Sep 16 - 05:16 AM Kampervan, not raising funds generally, more raising funds for someone who has had plenty of opportunity to save for old age, but I take your point. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Kampervan Date: 21 Sep 16 - 05:06 AM Dear Guest If you wish to discuss the rights and wrongs of fund raising for performers may I respectfully suggest that you start a new thread for that purpose rather than risk side-tracking this one. |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: GUEST Date: 21 Sep 16 - 04:40 AM At the risk of upsetting everybody here, I am wondering why we should be asked to fund a pensioner (like myself) "over a difficult period". Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Uncle Tone Date: 16 Sep 16 - 06:40 AM I had a long chat with John Barrow yesterday. I raised the fund because I was surprised that I couldn't find one for Dick. Turns out John was about to do it. He hopes, with other benefit contributions, to get enough together eventually to give Dick about a year off so he can make a full recovery. They have adopted this fund. There is no point in raising a second one and if anyone does it would not be official although I understand there is also an approved fund-raiser in Ireland. As we speak the fund now approaches £2,500. I am amazed at the sheer generosity and good-will that this has generated towards Dick. Apart from the small percentage that JustGiving takes, Dick will get every penny. Thanks everyone! |
Subject: RE: Fund for Dick Gaughan From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Sep 16 - 12:19 AM That was the one question I had - whether it was approved by Dick. Thanks for answering the question before I asked, Uncle Tone. -Joer- |

I would like to sincerely thank all those who have donated so far. The fund has now been approved by Dick and endorsed by his agent as official. It will be available for donations until 14th October. Dick is very tired and he is not taking on further gigs. It is hoped that enough can be raised eventually to cover Dick for a year to give him time to recover. |
