That's a great idea, Rachel. I would just comment that it might be worth taking a good look at any old stuff that comes in. Old guitars can often need more than just re-stringing to be playable. One with a wrongly set or bowed neck (for example) will be unplayable - with the end result that your budding players may be put off for life!

Dick's suggestion of ukes as an alternative is a good one.

If I see anything halfway playable in any of the charity shops that line local streets, I'll bag one for you if I can.

Rachel - I think Dartford folk club is your nearest - and its well attended. You might like to copy your request to them - you never know.

if you have any difficulties, here is a suggestion for the children , get ukeles [they are cheap and good quality often] use the top 4 strings of a guitar [nylon strings] [1]e [2]b [3]g [4]d, or alternatively d b g d [banjotuning or open g guitar tuning, and teach the children how to play using the top 4 strings only

Folkie friends...I'm starting free guitar lessons for the teachers/TA's in a school where I am a counsellor ( Culverstone Green Primary School in Kent) to help equip them to bring music and song into their classrooms. Currently, the only experience they have is in singing along to cds in assembly.
If any of you have old/cheap and unwanted guitars that you would like to donate; they would be very gratefully received and restrung.

I am surprised and delighted at the uptake of staff wanting to learn to play the guitar and excited at the prospect of our staff inspiring a generation of children to want to learn to play too
As part of this project, I will also be starting free lessons for our disadvantaged kids in the new year, so I'm also on the lookout for unwanted half/three quarter sized guitars as many parents in our school are unable to afford to buy guitars for their children. I am of the opinion that all children should have an equal opportunity to have the experience of learning an instrument, rather than be attainable only for those who can afford to pay xx
