The three volume controls on my Carvin X60 have become noisy, and there are a also couple of dead spots. I have sprayed each of them with electrical contact cleaner which made an improvement, but to do the job properly I need to remove the amp section from its cabinet so that I can get some contact cleaner to the potentiometer tracks. As there is not much space inside the cabinet, I don't think that I want to risk damaging the valves.

So 2 questions - 1. Does anyone know of an amp tech in the Croydon UK area and 2. Has anyone actually removed the amp from a Carvin X60 amp?

I've used this bloke - in Surrey, so not too far removed from you - and he's very good. Works from home.

Thanks anyway Will Fly, I've been looking at a couple of youtube videos showing removal of amp from other combo cabinets and it doesn't actually look too difficult when done by somebody experienced. The problem I have is supporting a very heavy amp chasis with one hand whilst manually unscrewing the holding screws with the other. The trick I think is to use a power screwdriver which minimises the amount of time necessary to support it with the other hand - maybe time to invest in one"

From what I can see from an online picture there are four screws on the top that hold the amp to the wooden frame. I would expect the amp to sit on a shelf or two batons attached to the sides. If I were trying to take it apart I would lie it on the floor, speakers down, and try fo undo the screws in that position.

Would it help to get a can of compressed air and use the little tube to blow dust from behind the knobs?

Bonzo - "The problem I have is supporting a very heavy amp chassis with one hand whilst manually unscrewing the holding screws with the other."

Have not done the X60 but the construction looks pretty standard. Power driver is a big plus on any job.

Carvin used to put wooden rails on the inside of the cabinets to support the amps. The top screws aren't for tension they're for shear if you know what I mean.

Otherwise flip the cabinet over and let one end hang out over the edge of the workbench far enough to get at the screws. Rinse and repeat. It's easier backing the chassis out looking down at it. The screws are the easy part.

if it was me, Id go direct to Carvin to see if I could find someone helpful in tech advice...

I've got into very interesting & informative phone calls/emails with some quite important figures in gear design that way...

There might still be some old bloke who knows your amp inside out...???
