Subject: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: CET Date: 26 Sep 16 - 08:26 PM It looks like I am the first which surprises me. Anyway, we are back safe and sound after another wonderful weekend at the Getaway. Many thanks to all our friends. There were so many great memories. I wish I could remember the names of those young girls who completely knocked my socks off with their ballads at the concert. My number one memory right now is Rose Sheeha tearing the roof off the Nature Centre in the wee hours of the morning with the late and ver much lamented Barry Finn's extended version of The Erie Canal. Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 coming soon!; schedule posted From: Janie Date: 26 Sep 16 - 08:29 PM It was another Xanadu weekend. Home now and exhausted, but happily so. I overslept and didn't make it to breakfast so did not get a chance to tell anyone goodbye. Woke up when Amos, Abby Sale and the rest of the motley crew I traveled with showed up at the cabin, ready to take off. So virtual hugs to all I didn't get to hug in person. There was music in the air.... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Joe Offer Date: 26 Sep 16 - 11:40 PM Looks like Edmund came in first by 3 minutes...I moved Janie's post here so the discussion wouldn't be split. It was, of course, a wonderful gathering. After we left camp this morning, Janie Meneely took four of us sailing on choppy Chesapeake Bay - Rich Galloway, Severn, Leadfingers, and I were Janie's crew. We saw herons, cormorants, gulls and terns, and a couple bald eagles. See y'all next year. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Janie Date: 27 Sep 16 - 09:23 AM There were, as usual, too many 'best moments' to count. The young ballad singers were amazing. It was really good to see a number of young people there, all of them very steeped 'in the tradition.' Pete Kraemer blew my socks off with a beautifully done song at the Saturday concert. Anyone remember the name of the tune? It wasn't a song I knew or had heard before. And thanks to Lucy and David, I now have "20 Naked Pentacostals in a Pontiac" as an ear worm:>) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: MMario Date: 27 Sep 16 - 09:57 AM I think I am beginning to get the hand of the "retirement" thing.... dragging my butt out of bed at the crack of ten after a four day weekend of music and friends. yeah; I could get used to this. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Sep 16 - 11:06 AM Thanks for reminding me, Janie. I knew somebody saying "Joshua Gone Barbados" at the Getaway, and sang it in a way that I finally understood the song. It was Pete Kraemer who sang it, and he did a terrific job. I, too, am trying to erase the image of the naked Pentecostals from my mind, but it was a great song. The Pentecostals probably looked a lot like aging folkies. Joe |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: hsempl Date: 27 Sep 16 - 12:34 PM I'll write more later, after I've recuperated more, but right now I'm listening to Ernie's beautiful CD, Full Fathom Fifteen, and it's the perfect way to ease back into the world. Missing all of you I see too seldom but feeling close all the while. Thanks to everyone behind the scenes who makes Getaway run, it's so important to so many. -Heather |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Janie Date: 27 Sep 16 - 03:40 PM What Heather said re the behind the scenes folks who make the Getaway happen and run so smoothly. A rather small group of people within the FSGW organization who do 99% of the work, close to year round, that culminates in this magical weekend for so many of us. So very grateful. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Alaska Mike Date: 27 Sep 16 - 05:22 PM We are home, fed the chickens, collected the mail, picked up the newspapers, turned on the air conditioner, chlorinated the greenish swimming pool, and found out my phone has been closed. More later. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Janie Date: 27 Sep 16 - 07:44 PM Bare Bones, an invited guest a capella were delightful. On a personal note very much more so for me. Can't claim Bill or Becky were ever close friends, but we 'ran with the same pack' in what were my latter days in Chsrleston, WV. Loved reconnecting and getting filled in on my old and treasured stomping grounds, people I haven't seen in 30+ years, and who fed my appetite and interest in all manner of folk music. Not the first time the Getaway has reconnected me with people from long ago and far away. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: maeve Date: 27 Sep 16 - 07:55 PM So glad you could be at this year's Getaway, Janie. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: ranger1 Date: 27 Sep 16 - 11:36 PM Ah, Getaway! As always, treasured moments. Having Sally Rogers tell me I have a beautiful voice and that I should sing more was one of the highest of high points. Listening to Bare Bones, and then asking them after the Sunday night concert if they would sing I'll Fly Away in honor of my grandmother and then having a crowd of others join in made a better memorial than the bland memorial gathering that was held after she died. Sitting down with Rita, Tinker, and Laura at 10:30 PM in the Retreat Center laughing and telling stories and suddenly realizing it was 2:00 AM. Late night singing in the Nature Center on Sunday night. There will be more snippets that come to me in the next couple of days, I'm sure, once I've caught up on sleep. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Fred Maslan Date: 28 Sep 16 - 12:28 AM It was great to reconnect with people I met three years ago and to connect with the old friends I never knew and even with old friends from across the country. I now need to start planning how to get there next year. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Charmion Date: 28 Sep 16 - 08:21 AM This was our 15th Getaway since 2000; we've missed only once, last year. It's so refreshing to see our friends again, to drop everything and -- literally -- get away for a weekend of music and chat. Thanks to John LaPrelle and a nice guy named Rocky for unpacking the political situation for me. That was educational as well as fun, and I'm grateful. Thanks to Alaska Mike and Tawmmie for the music and good company. Thanks to Art and Jennifer Brooks for being great cabin neighbours. People who know how to avoid slamming doors are people to treasure. Also, great conversation -- another treasure. Tami Bill gives the best sneak-up hug-from-behind, a manoeuvre that normally makes me feel threatened, but not when she does it. It must be a ranger thing. Edmund and I both noticed how familiar certain spots in the States are to us now, after bombing to the Getaway and back so many times. We have landmarks in places we would otherwise never have visited -- the First Bank of Rising Sun, on the way to Ramblewood, for example, the BP station on the corner of Muddy Creek Road, and the ever-present construction site around the Park View Hotel in Syracuse. Gotta go practise the guitar, now ... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Rapparee Date: 28 Sep 16 - 09:33 AM I'm going to practice on my bugle so I'll be ready for next year. Reveille at 0400! Musicians' Call at 0417! The bugler goes back to bed immediately thereafter. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: GUEST,Dani Date: 29 Sep 16 - 06:43 PM Hm. I seem to recall someone at Ramblewood tromping around early in the moning, piping up the camp, followed by a trail of dancing children. Not sure I ever say him again after that morning, Rap, so you'd better pay up your insurance. So sad to have missed this year, hope you caught my spirit lurking around the edges of the singing. I console myself with reunions with mudcatters pre- and post, and second the thanks to those of you who work so hard to keep making this happen so that even when we can't go, we can hear the singing. Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Nancy King Date: 29 Sep 16 - 10:51 PM By a stroke of incredible luck, I have ended up with the Getaway Lost and Found. Fortunately, we've already found the owner of some folding chairs, but I still have several things: --A nice white melamine bowl with an Asian design on one side --A blue inflatable neck pillow --A plastic pill container with a label saying "Melatonin" but containing a couple of different kinds of pills. If any of these are yours, please let me know, and we'll work out how to get them back to you. Great to see so many old friends at the Getaway!!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: maeve Date: 30 Sep 16 - 03:47 PM I trust that Kendall and Jacqui returned home safely. I also trust the auction went well. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: ranger1 Date: 30 Sep 16 - 03:49 PM I'm assuming they got home alright. They passed Tinker and I on the Jersey Turnpike doing about Mach 5. I'm pretty sure Jacqui was driving. And the auction went well. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: maeve Date: 30 Sep 16 - 04:22 PM Good. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Leadfingers Date: 30 Sep 16 - 09:17 PM One day I hope you make it to Getaway Maeve , and I hope can be there with you . Thouroughly enjoyed it this year |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Bobert Date: 30 Sep 16 - 10:10 PM Well, I don't get away like I used to or even scratch in the cat box like I used to but it's always good to read that my ol' friends are still up to their usual stay-up-all-night antics and trying to drive home in the snow... Snow??? That ain't snow... It's the lack of sleep, people... Glad everyone survived... One day I'll return in a blaze of... (You're are rambling, Boberdz... Go to bed...) Good night... B~ |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: My guru always said Date: 01 Oct 16 - 05:00 AM So glad to read such happiness from across the pond, sounds like you've all had a fabulous Getaway!! One of these years we'll get across & join you again, hopefully. Just a lot of $$'s & forward planning to create the free time. My Sister now lives back in the UK so it would be more complicated for us from now on. Hugs to all & keep up the good work xx |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Bill D Date: 01 Oct 16 - 12:00 PM I don't stay up late like I used to,(this was my 38th consecutive year) but there's always plenty of music, hugs and silly doings BEFORE midnight. I wish everyone who has been here 'sometimes' could come back, but the camp only holds about 200. I too am so glad to see those young singers doing so well. We had 4 consecutive hours of ballad sessions on Sat., and barely scratched the surface of the ballads people knew. (There could be an entire Ballad Getaway where each ballad could have the long discussion it deserves.) (Susan Friedman brought copies of her recently published book, "Body Count" where her years of research on murder ballads is thoroughly discussed. Get it!) For those who do Facebook, pictures of various people and scenes are beginning to appear. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Amos Date: 01 Oct 16 - 11:25 PM The presence of youth sprinkled in every corner was a great delight, as were the terrific numbers done at every workshop, and a special nod to the hardwood humor of Steve Cormier,m cowboy extraordinaire, and my favorite mariner, the Skippah. I enjoyed every darned minute of it, and the magic island will haunt my daydreams for months to come. May we all celebrate a reunion next year, in the same idyllic grounds. One of these years I will arrive by sea, by gar. |
Subject: RE: Gotaway 2016 (summing up the aftermath) From: Severn Date: 03 Oct 16 - 07:23 PM Sleep deprived even before Getaway, it took me a few days to catch up on all that missed sleep...... Things were jump started by a fine party and jam, as usual, going long into Thursday night at the Rosenthals It was wonderful to have Leadfingers as a visitor and getting to hang out with him and talk of old and new times...... The special guests were well chosen, and all the young girls, many of them new, were a special treat. A met a lot of new friends, reconnected with some old ones, and swapped a few songs............ There were stirring tributes tributes given to my long time friend and singing partner Phil Fox, who'd had a stroke a month before Getaway and passed away the night after he got home. He was very much in my thoughts the whole weekend.... I got to do fun workshops with Sara White and Mmario..... As mentioned by Joe, some of us got to go for a sail with Janie Meneeley. The Second Annual Post-Getaway Monday Night sing at Zed's Cafe proved to be an excellent time, with visitors Steve Cormier and Leadfingers and a gathering some excellent locals, a fine turnout, despite being up against the Debate..... New Getaway friend Ash Devine singing locally on Tuesday night...... A highlight of my year, every year without fail, and always for some new reasons to add to the old....... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Leadfingers Date: 04 Oct 16 - 05:11 AM What I should have said earlier was the extreme pleasure of so many saying to me on arrival "Welcome Home" |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: artbrooks Date: 04 Oct 16 - 06:06 PM We got home yesterday (10/3, or 3/10 for Charmion) afternoon, after a couple of days each in North Carolina and Texas to see Jenn's sister and our daughter/grandkids. Fun as always, and herself is already making noises about coming again next year (rather than our usual every-other-year). Thank you all. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Charmion Date: 04 Oct 16 - 07:30 PM Thanks for that, Art. Otherwise, I'd think we'd all somehow slept through the better part of six months! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: kendall Date: 04 Oct 16 - 07:31 PM With one big disappointment, (Dani couldn't be there,) it was a super weekend. My voice just kept getting weaker and weaker. I thought for sure it would never come back and I would have to give up the Getaway. But, for the last 2 or 3 days it is a bit stronger. I still can't sing, but I do a good imitation of a tame Crow. I try to avoid naming high points, so many of them, but, I must say, telling Charmion and Edmund a joke, and their reaction was priceless. As usual, Tinker rescued my poor old back with her healing hands. I met Howie Burson, someone I have admired for years. I also got to meet Steve Cormier, finally. I heard that Sally Rogers likes my storytelling. If she had said that to my face, I might have swooned. Hearing Amos sing one of my songs was a hoot! AND, KT AND LARRY MADE IT from Alaska! Jacqui's guitar got one too many and fell over. she's fine now. All told, it was a blast. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: KT Date: 05 Oct 16 - 08:19 AM Well, it's been several years since my last Getaway, and I was thrilled to be there again! It's so wonderful to see everyone, and as ever, I am amazed and profoundly grateful for the connection we have made through our shared love of music! I only wish there was enough time to sit and catch up with everyone, and get to know those new faces, and hear many more songs from everyone! Thanks again to the organizers, who work so hard for so long to ensure that this weekend goes so well, and thanks for welcoming this traveler! KT |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: skarpi Date: 05 Oct 16 - 12:39 PM awww some day again ...:) ... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Nancy King Date: 06 Oct 16 - 12:00 PM We sure would love to see you again, Skarpi! Next year our dates are even earlier, so mark your calendars NOW for September 15-18, 2017! Hopefully we'll be able to get back to early October (or at least later in September) after that -- we shall see. As I've said before, it's the people who come to the Getaway who make it the wonderful experience it is! Thank you all for coming!! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: MMario Date: 06 Oct 16 - 04:41 PM One of the GREAT pleasures this year was to have KT present; though it was a little strange not to have her skyping from the counter..... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Bill D Date: 06 Oct 16 - 04:43 PM Well.. she was grinning from the counter briefly... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: KT Date: 06 Oct 16 - 08:55 PM And blushing..... Bill, I didn't get your meaning when you said I should be sitting on the counter until the abduction by Mario and Janet! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Charmion Date: 07 Oct 16 - 10:00 AM Okay. Marking the calendar now ... Next year, we expect to drive to West River from Stratford, Ontario, in Perth County west of Toronto. Oddly, the distance to the Getaway will be almost exactly what it is from Ottawa, but we will have to cross the river (and the border) at big, bad Buffalo instead of bucolic Hill Island. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: GUEST Date: 07 Oct 16 - 04:40 PM Did the sheet music/song books sell in the scholarship auction, or shall I send something different next year? |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: GUEST,Maeve Date: 07 Oct 16 - 05:03 PM Sorry- 'Twas I asking about the scholarship auction. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2016 aftermath From: Janie Date: 07 Oct 16 - 07:44 PM They did not sell, Maeve. I think but do not know for sure, that Jacqui gathered them to return to you. In another year I think they would have sold. This year the auction was almost exclusively song books, music and the Getaway attendance seemed to me to be small this year. I base that on noting how many empty or sparsely populated tables there were in the dining hall at mealtime, but don't know any official numbers re attendance. There were more items than usual that did not receive bids and the auction raised much less money than it has during the previous years that I have been involved with running it. Between the auction, the Mummer's Play and an anonymous generous donation, my impression is about the same amount of funds were raised at the Getaway for the scholarship fund as in the several years past, but without the anonymous donation, fundraising would have been quite shy of past results. |
