Subject: RE: Mudcat FAQ - Newcomer's Guide From: GUEST,Pork sausage Mike Date: 12 Oct 16 - 03:22 PM For years I've been searching for the melody to my old school song. I nicked a copy of the words and kept it as a souvenir....70+ yrs ago. I have no idea who composed it...or when... I'm guessing in the 1900's or earlier.. or think I would have found it. It has 5 verses. V1. When years have rolled behind us and back in times deep shade, The distant days of boyhood grow fainter till they fade, One memory we'll cherish, one name hold ever dear, And through the darkening shadows our school shall stand yet clear. Chorus:- Persevere! Persevere! In work, in play, in life, In rivalry of Nations, or boyhood's friendly strife, The race goes to the eager, the laggard falls behind, And ever to the bravest do fortune's smiles prove kind. I thought about it last Sat when celebrating the 40th anniversary of its' closure with the Annual re-union! |

"Absque Labore Nihil" -- H. R. "Masher" Mills, at what used to be Brighton Grammar School. ? which three words in the chorus, by the way ? (really I ought to get a proper job and stop this madness) |

When years have rolled behind us, And back in time's deep shade, The distant days of boyhood grow fainter 'til they fade; One memory we'll cherish, One name hold ever dear, And through the darkening shadows Our school shall yet stand clear. Noted in this man's blog (Chris Lord) under "School Dayz". http://www.pixielatedpixels.com/New-Site-Pages/All-About-This-Site-and-The-Ar/Articles- He states, The motto Absque Labore Nihil (without labor nothing) was written over the door of the original building that housed my school but when the school moved to it's later much larger building the motto stayed and caused much laughter as the building was turned into a maternity hospital. This would be the forum location to ask your question Mr. http://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/page_id__10150.aspx H. R. Mills (Masher) was the French master who was approaching retirement age and not averse to a lunchtime sherry. He also was Second Master and the writer of the words of the school song - Absque Labore Nihil. A very respected man. (posting by By Dudley Seifert 25/02/2008) ............ Subject: RE: Lyr Req: School song: Persevere, Persevere From: GUEST,Pork Sausage Mike Date: 12 Nov 16 - 03:59 PM Thanks for your interest, and the lyrics . My copy of the lyrics..has 4 verses but does not begin with the Latin phrase as is published on this site and a chorus...to be sung once. But it is the melody I require. I and a pal have worked out the tune to the verse and I have put the 'dots' on manuscript paper...in a v basic manner..but I can understand it and we think it's correct but the chorus has defeated us. We think we know how it goes but when I sit in front of my keyboard we lose it completely! Being Octogenarians doesn't help either! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: School song: Persevere, Persevere From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 13 Nov 16 - 01:08 AM Have you been able to view area 1 hour 8 minutes into the above video? IF...that is the tune you are requesting ...it should not be difficult to transcribe. Sincerely, Gargoyle If you post YOUR "nicked" verses...and the video tune matches...musical notation, and perhaps, song may soon follow. |
