Subject: John Slinger (Lancaster UK) in hospital
From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler

Probably quite a few UK chatters will know John from Whitby, Banbury, "Off the Rails" etc. Also might know him as a Morris dancer with John o'Gaunt and Wrigley Head and caller for dances in the area.

He is currently in an induced coma in intensive care having been found collapsed at home when his partner Hilary could not get a reply when she phoned home.

Tests are ongoing to find out what the problem is.

Just had a message from Hilary to say that it has been confirmed as a stroke in the brain stem. They will probably try to bring him out of the coma tomorrow and then see how he responds.

He was taken in on 10th but we don't know how long it was after he collapsed before they found him. He was unconcious then but did make some arm and leg movements at the time.

I'll wait for further news from Hilary.

This now makes two Wrigley Head dancers with strokes in one week. Ray Murphy is also in hospital but has only his right arm affected and movement in that seems to be recovering so far.

More news from Hilary today.

They brought him out of the coma for a while and he could respond to instructions and had movement in all limbs.
He no longer needs help to breathe but has not spoken yet.
They sedated him again to aid recovery.

It looks like it could be quite a long time to achieve a full recovery.

Message from Hilary last night. He has movement in his limbs but unable to open his eyes. Can't talk as there is a breathing tube in, among several other tubes. Is able to understand what is going on as he squeezes Hilary's hand to communicate.
We will be going in to see him tomorrow and pass on cards and good wishes in person.

Robin & Anne

Message this morning that John is looking at things through one eye. They suspect that he has double vision so is only using the one eye. He is able to coordinate movements of his hands to some extent as he was feeling one hand with the other to explore what was attached to it.
He is able to understand what is being said to him, looking in the directions he is asked to, and things are looking a bit brighter.

Anne and I popped in to see him tonight for a few minutes and were surprised by how well he is doing.

He has had the breathing tube removed and was able to say a couple of words, though I imagine it must be painful, and he was having to cough to keep his chest clear, which must also be painful. He was moving all limbs, apparently without hindrance and was seeing through his right eye. His left eye remains closed but I don't know if this is deliberate.

He was squeezing hands in greeting and I think trying to reassure Hilary, in which regard he was successful.

Robin

went to see John in hospital today. Sadly he has not managed to maintain the level of recovery achieved. His condition is worsening and the prognosis is becoming increasingly poor. His family is with him.

Unwanted news I am afraid.

Hilary rang us in the last hour to say that John died at teatime today.

He had been slowly losing strength as he had contracted pneumonia and some other infection and was back on oxygen to help him breathe. Anne dropped in to the hospital briefly to see him yesterday and his appearance was healthy but as though in a deep sleep.

Hilary had left briefly for a meal with her daughter when the hospital called her. Both the hospital and Anne, from personal experience, pointed out that sometimes a person will hang on against a losing battle until their loved ones are out of the room.

We shall all miss him in our various ways and for our various reasons. I cannot imagine him as an invalid, it would have been a complete recovery or nothing!

Robin and Anne

PS can a mudelf please add an Obit and 2016 to the title.

Latest news on John's funeral is that Hilary would like a big "do". Plans are not yet definite but it will probably be church service followed by a wake at the Lancaster Brewery, with lots of singing and some morris dancing. It would mean a taxi ride across town from the station for those coming by rail but I expect people can team up to share taxis. Date is not yet fixed but won't be a weekend or a Friday.
It would be useful to have some idea of the number of folk coming. Can you reply to me and I'll tot up the numbers.

More info when it's sorted out more.

Very sad news but I'm sure John would appreciate what is envisaged. We will be there and I imagine an awful lot of others will be too.

More details.

John's funeral is at 2:00pm at Lancaster and Morecambe crematorium, Powder House Lane, LA2 6AD, on Monday 19th December, followed by a "wake" at the Lancaster Brewery, LA1 3LA.

It is to be a folky service and wake so the more singers, musicians and dancers at both service and wake the better. Dancers attending from all of the morris sides represented are requested to wear kit regardless of whether or not there is a full side to dance. Hilary has requested no mourning clothes please.

The service at the crematorium will be taken by a priest who has done "folky" services before and would welcome singers and musicians to come and swell the sound.

For people coming by rail to Lancaster, it is a short taxi ride, less than 2 miles, to the crematorium, then about the same to the brewery, and the same again back to the station ( the 3 places are roughly in a triangle) and of course people could share.

There are to be family flowers only and any donations to go to "The Stroke Society" please, via J Mason and Son, Undertakers. 19 Moor Lane, Lancaster.

As we need to have some idea of numbers coming, please get back to me.

Kind regards

Robin

PS still need an OBIT preface to the thread.
Fixed it. Best to let me know direct if you need editing. -Joe Offer-

Many thanks from Hilary to all who came to the service and wake yesterday.
I think we had about 170 of us there. The acoustics in the brewery were a challenge but we managed quite a few suitable songs and were able to use the sound system to play some tracks of John singing. How many of us will be remembered as singing at their own wake?

Glad it went well ... and your report reminds me of Johnny Collins' funeral, when we entered the crem chapel to the sound of Johnny's singing!

Very sorry to hear this- I don't come in here very often any more.
I'd love to hear more about John's send-off: was there dancing as well as music and singing?

Thanks Joe for changing the thread title.

Yes, Wrigley Head did a couple of dances at the wake in the brewery. Members of Wrigley Head and John o' Gaunt were a guard of honour to accompany the coffin into the crematorium.
The U3A dance group musicians were responsible for the music at the crematorium, Bob piping him in with "a man's a man" and playing "over the hills and far away" at the end. Mike, Anne and I played for the two hymns.
At the wake we mainly sang, and ate, and toasted John's memory.

Yes, sorry to hear this too and condolences to his family and friends. I am not sure if I ever met John but we did attend Lancaster Maritime Festival for many years as the Abram Pace Egg play and I was involved with another NW Morris team that brought us into contact with many other Morris dancers over the years.

RIP

Dave

You may have missed John at Lancaster Maritime Festivals as he was the Doctor in the Lancaster Mummers, performing on the other days.
