November Shanty, Forebitter and Foc's'le Ballad Session this Saturday, November 19th from 3:30 to 7:30 PM at The Press Room on Daniel Street in Portsmouth, NH.

I apologize for being a tad later than I usually announce this. I'm dealing with a family crisis in Milwaukee.

Historical note -- The Press Room celebrates its 40th anniversary this week. Original proprietor Jay Smith opened on election day in 1976. Originally the pub only served beer. A full liquor license was added in 1981 -- with a license that didn't require serving food, but demanded live music from open to close. On Sunday, November 20th, there will be an open house at The Press Room from 1-3.

This monthly session was started by Curmudgeon and me in January 2003, so we're fast approaching 14 years. Our weekly trad session started the summer of 1982. Lots of tradition at The Press Room!

Come join us for the shanty sing on Saturday! Music makes the world a better place.

Linn

I am echoing Dianne's sentiment, Barry. Also, Dianne, you were missed last month. I do expect to be there. Hope some folks from the "North Shore", as well as the great state of Maine, will find their way to the Press Room to join in!

I'll be there. Charlie won't, though. Darn it, have to drive myself.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, STAN HUGILL! Stan's been sailing other seas since 1992.

Tom and I saw him in June 1982 at South Church Unitarian in Portsmouth along with Starboard List. He was self-medicating (with rum in a flask) for a cold, but we really enjoyed the performance.

This is so appropriate for today's session. I'm sure we can dredge up a few songs that Stan brought to our attention.

And we'll also find space for the traditional "Thanksgiving Round".

See you this afternoon!

Linn

A fairly loud and raucous session -- and a good distraction from politics. (And I think we needed a respite.)

The crew was me (Linn Schulz, nom de Mudcat Bat Goddess), Emery Hutchins, Susan Young, Dianne Lavoie, Nicole Hourihane, Barry O'Brien (after a hard summer sailing...), Jeri, Bill Perry, Gail & Jim Finn, Don & Cathy Hale, Chris Vaughan, Ranger1, Mike Moderd, Bill Lehrman & Carol Pierson, Justine Donovan, April & Eric, and Gail Diderickson.

What we sang --
1. Maggie May - Linn

Thanks for posting Linn.

Susan, Dan, Barry and I went out for something to eat afterward to clear our heads and get a history lesson from Susan. One of her ancestors played a significant role in Portsmouth's history. Who knew?

You all done well.

I've been kicking up Bob's-a-Dying here in the great City of New York. Sunday was a double-header with the Sea Music Session at Sailors Snug Harbor on Staten Island in the afternoon and the Exceedingly Good Song Night at the Jalopy Theatre in Brooklyn. If you are interested in more details and PIXS, go to my Facebook Page.
