Lyr Req: Margaret's Waltz

Subject: Margarets Waltz From: bunkerhill Date: 11 Dec 99 - 11:03 AM When I've heard "Margarets Waltz" played, it's been attributed to trad. But saw a reference somewhere that it was written not too long ago and that there are lyrics. Can anyone help? |

In the '60s, I would guess, though others will have more accurate information than I. Aly Bain did a lot to popularise the tune, recording it in 1989, and I suspect that most versions played nowadays are based on his playing rather than on the original piece. I'm not aware of any lyrics, but it wouldn't be too surprising if a number of people had tried their hands at making some; though they would have to be pretty good to do justice to that melody... I sent him the music from our session group and there is no information on our music page which is a copy of handwritten music and has Margaret's Waltz and Farewell to Devon on it. These two tunes have been a couple of favourites for our session group for over 20 years, maybe even 30 years. I just found this: Margaret’s Waltz and Farewell to Devon © Pat Shaw, 1959 So it appears that Pat Shaw also wrote Farewell to Devon. Here it is played by Aly Bain and Peerie Willie Johnston Helen |

I did tell them the true origin as politely as I could, as they had been trying to please us by playing something Scottish. Have never come across any lyrics for it, and as Malcolm Douglas said way back, would perhaps resist any temptation to try, as the tune speaks for itself. |

The words for the Thomasson MotW I linked above, sung by the late Kate Wolf were written by John Croizat, probably long after Luke wrote the melody. The tunewriter of the original MoTW tune is Luke Thomasson. (And it has all been debated at length before: see: Midnight on the Water - previous thread ) |
