When I've heard "Margarets Waltz" played, it's been attributed to trad. But saw a reference somewhere that it was written not too long ago and that there are lyrics. Can anyone help?

On Musicman's "Farewell" CD, He plays Margaret's waltz and says it's traditional.... Margo

I think Connie Kaldor wrote words to it.

Margaret's Waltz was written by Patrick Shuldham Shaw, stalwart of the English Folk Dance and Song Society and prolific collector and composer. In the '60s, I would guess, though others will have more accurate information than I. Aly Bain did a lot to popularise the tune, recording it in 1989, and I suspect that most versions played nowadays are based on his playing rather than on the original piece. I'm not aware of any lyrics, but it wouldn't be too surprising if a number of people had tried their hands at making some; though they would have to be pretty good to do justice to that melody...

Yes, I missed the correction on the album, it has been notated on the web page that it is not a traditional tune.....

Have never heard of any words for it though, but that dosn't mean much..... :)

great tune thought.....

Pat Shaw wrote it to celebrate the retirement of Margaret from the EFDSS, knowing his habits, he probably composed a dance for it as well'

Yes indeed - "Margaret's Waltz" is a very pretty dance.

Paul/Musicman can blame me for not being able to attribute the tune to Pat Shaw. I sent him the music from our session group and there is no information on our music page which is a copy of handwritten music and has Margaret's Waltz and Farewell to Devon on it. These two tunes have been a couple of favourites for our session group for over 20 years, maybe even 30 years.

I just found this:

Margaret’s Waltz and Farewell to Devon © Pat Shaw, 1959

So it appears that Pat Shaw also wrote Farewell to Devon.

Here it is played by Aly Bain and Peerie Willie Johnston

I have heard it introduced by some German musicians as being Scottish, probably because they only knew Aly Bain's version, and certainly it is played a lot up here! I did tell them the true origin as politely as I could, as they had been trying to please us by playing something Scottish. Have never come across any lyrics for it, and as Malcolm Douglas said way back, would perhaps resist any temptation to try, as the tune speaks for itself.

Helen - I know that not 'the' correct tune, but it is the dance! The versions I found with the correct tune were either badly danced, badly filmed or badly played.

Hi JennieG, I'm not a dancer so all I was doing was listening to was the tune.

Are you just trying to confuse me?? LOL

It's not the tune but it is the dance. Take pity on a poor non-dancer, please!!

The Yetties play Farewell to Devon and Margaret's Waltz (in that order) as a set on their 1989 Album Play It Again. The composer credit is "Shaw".

There have been lyrics written to Midnight on the water. This tune is often played alongside Margaret's Waltzi

Back in my dancing days the tunes used most for the dance were 'Margaret's Waltz' and 'Farewell to Devon'. Occasionally a band would throw in something different, but it's been so long I can't remember what those different tunes were.

The song "Midnight on the Water" was written by Ron Kavana, and has a different tune from the "Midnight on the Water" Thomasson waltz, which is, however, used as an instrumental break between verses. Also sung by The Watersons and others (including me!)

MARGARET'S WALTZ
As recorded by Connie Kaldor on "Wood River" (2010)

1. I'm not the kind to sit and pine for places far away.
Every town I travel to has its charms and its delights;
But something about the moon tonight sends a longing to my soul
To be at a dance with the one I love on a warm prairie night.

CHORUS: And I can hear that Margaret's Waltz, that the fiddle plays so sweet,
And I can feel the spring of the hardwood floor beneath my feet.
I close my eyes and I see the lights of town twinkling at night.
They say that home is where your heart is; I guess they're right.

2. So please forgive me but tonight my thoughts are far away
To the place my memory will go if I give it half a chance.
I smell the sage upon the air and I'm walking arm in arm
With the one I love towards the sound of an old-time country dance. CHORUS

Someone wrote words to the Thomason tune MotW. The writer's name escapes me.

The lyrics version of Midnight on the Water is performed by The Watersons , and the songwriter is Benny Thomasson

Go to 57 mins 15 into that video of a live performance.

(I might have to write a sad lament to the poor broken Google-finger belonging to Gillymor. :-D )

Carthy, Waterson and Parkinson play the Luke Thomasson (Benny's father) melody as an intro to the song you linked, Helen, but don't use it for the song that follows. The words for the Thomasson MotW I linked above, sung by the late Kate Wolf were written by John Croizat, probably long after Luke wrote the melody. But don't fret, I'm sending you a splint for your dislocated google finger via next day air and I'll try to make time in my schedule to tutor you on the intricacies of www search engines. (insert smiley face)

Respectfully, (g)illymor

Sorry folks/Helen, but as I stated higher up the thread the LYRIC writer for Midnight on the Water, as sung by the Watersons is RON KAVANA: he probably also wrote the tune for the verses, which is not the saem as the original tune.
The tunewriter of the original MoTW tune is Luke Thomasson.
(And it has all been debated at length before:
see: Midnight on the Water - previous thread )

It's all too confusing. Especially as this is a thread about Margaret's Waltz. LOL

We just play the MoyW tune in our session group. We don't muck about with words much, which is why our group is known as Mainly Tunes.

gillymor, my Google finger only works when it wants to. We're strongly unionised over here, so it works to rules, only as and when it feels like it. :-D
