The December Monthly Shanty, Forebitter, Foc's'l Ballad, and Annual Seasonal Song Session will be happening this Saturday, December 17th at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.

This annual sea and seasonal song session usually brings out a lot of material not sung the rest of the year. We'll definitely have to do Brian Chadburne's "Shopping Shanty" and, I'm sure, Charlie has a few seasonal songs about traditional Maine weather, etc. It's wide open for songs we only get a short opportunity to sing each year.

See you there!

Looks as if we're set for a "wintry mix" on Saturday...

Play it by ear...but be safe.

Hope we can all get together and "drive cold winter away"!

"drive cold winter away"! ......Sung to the tune of "Drive Dull Care Away"? I'll be watching the weather forecasts also. I got away with it a couple of years ago, maybe I can do it again!

Left to my own devices, I would prefer not to drive to Portsmouth today...

But...I AM.

Going out to clear the white shhhhtuff off the car right now.

Shouldn't have any trouble parking at least...

Steps cleared off, deck mostly cleared off, car somewhat cleared off (basically just the windshield still needs to be done)...

The snow is lightweight, dry, and sort of fluffy...a lot better than the wet white concrete of earlier this week.

Better eat lunch, then get on the road.

Uh...no.

Roads from my place to Rte. 4 were, for all practical purposes, unplowed. Route 4 is very, very slippery. I got as far as Merry Hill and turned around. Had to wait in my neighbor's driveway while my plow guy did mine.

Now it's turning to rain.

I've talked to Aaron at The Press Room -- the pub is very very quiet right now. I think the jazz people weren't there, either.

I also just talked to Nick Noble and he knows I'm not risking the drive to Portsmouth. Whoever braves the elements is welcome to sit around and sing...or not.

Disappointing, but I'm kinda committed to staying in one piece (my car, too).

I hope Charley took a look at the weather and decided to stay in port.

It's turning to rain right now -- lord knows if it will freeze when the sun goes down.

Stay safe, people!

Oh, well..........Sing one for me! Discretion wins out over valor today. The problem appears to be getting from Norwood to 95 North of the 128 junction (128, of course!!!). 14 MPH is more than I want to put up with. We'll see how things look in January.

Charlie and I had a confab earlier in the week, so I knew he was staying home if it was snowing. Which means I am staying home. And it's still coming down here in Freeport.

Just heard from Nick Noble -- he and Jamie Bishop actually presided over a session this afternoon at The Press Room. He said Jim Prendergast was there for awhile, and Chris Vaughan was there. TNicole Hourihane showed up. (Sorry, Nicole; the rocks were with me, trapped in Nottingham.) Local jazz pianist Ray DeMarco and Jeanene joined in. Oh, and Luke whom we haven't seen for a few months. They sang Christmas songs and maritime songs and some I classifiable ditties. He said they closed with "Silent Night" with some amazing harmonies.

Thanks, Nick and Jamie!

Wish I could have been there, but there was twenty-five miles of very slippery roads between me and The Press Room.

"Unclassifiable" and "Nicole"...

Can't proofread your own work (even if I'd taken the time to actually look it over before hitting "Submit").

Photos have been posted at the Facebook group page for "The Folk Revival" -- Nick Noble's Thursday night folk show on WICN.org in Worcester, MA.

The group is here - The Folk Revival

There are three groups of photos, one for the Friday night trad session and two for the Saturday shanty sing that happened despite the weather. (Thanks, Nick and Jamie)
