Subject: BS: Merry Wossname From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 15 Dec 16 - 08:50 AM To those of you not on Facebook, whatever god you worship, even if it's only Mammon, have a good Christmas from me and my identical cousin Thimbles O'Hooligan. May 1917 have fewer surprises. RtS |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Senoufou Date: 15 Dec 16 - 09:34 AM Merry Wossname to you too Roger. (and to Thimbles O'Hooligan!) (Didn't Shane MacGowan of The Pogues change his name to O'Hooligan?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: meself Date: 15 Dec 16 - 10:47 AM I think 1917 has used up all its surprises. Prediction: the war will not end. |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Steve Shaw Date: 15 Dec 16 - 11:01 AM May 1917 had one surprise, a big revolution coming in five months' time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: DMcG Date: 15 Dec 16 - 01:10 PM I bet someone could tell me something surprising about 1917. But happy 2017 to one and all. |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 15 Dec 16 - 01:24 PM So I was a century out, when you get my age time flies! I meant 2017 of course. RtS |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Steve Shaw Date: 15 Dec 16 - 01:43 PM I didn't think it was your age, Roger, simply a slip of tense. Thought you meant that May 1917 HAD fewer surprises! 😂 |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Mr Red Date: 15 Dec 16 - 05:53 PM Merry Dawkinsmas everyone |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Dec 16 - 10:52 PM Roger, the rest of us were right back there in 1917 with you. But now that you've disavowed it, we're lost without you. Hope it was a nice century.... -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Will Fly Date: 16 Dec 16 - 03:12 AM All the best for Christmas to you, Rog - now and in a hundred years time. Skiffle on! |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: keberoxu Date: 16 Dec 16 - 01:12 PM Mine is not a typo story, just stupidity I guess. It was in high school many many moons ago, and the year-end holidays were coming. I recall dimly that the class subject was some form of science: a subject I am weak in, but being anxious for good grades, my studies were diligent. And there we were, in December, taking that last test before school let out for the holiday. The teacher had done the class a favor. A multiple-choice test it was, with alphabetic characters for the answer options. And, yes, if you looked at the answer sheet, the correct answers spelled out MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR as did every answer sheet from every student in the class...except for me. I had some kind of paranoia about other students cheating by looking at the answer sheets of those around them, including my answer sheet. So I had another sheet of paper or something with which to COVER the answer sheet, concealing all my answers the moment I chose them and wrote them down. I was the only one in the class who did not score one hundred percent on the test. Never mind what my score was; my answer sheet told the story. MERKY CHRISTMSH AND A HARPY NEW YRBL |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: keberoxu Date: 16 Dec 16 - 01:28 PM ...and before I forget, in answer to Wossname: Happy Hogswatch! |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Dave the Gnome Date: 16 Dec 16 - 03:11 PM And a happy new thingy! All the best from Gnomeland where the 21st century has not yet arrived :D tG |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Senoufou Date: 16 Dec 16 - 03:50 PM My bossy sister hates it when I say 'Merry Crimbo'. So I say it as often as possible just to tease her :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: frogprince Date: 16 Dec 16 - 05:39 PM Merry Poppins ! |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: keberoxu Date: 17 Dec 16 - 02:00 PM we wish you a MERKY CHRISTMSH we wish you a MERKY CHRISTMSH we wish you a MERKY CHRISTMSH and a HARPY NEW YR - BLLLLLLLLLLLL |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Senoufou Date: 17 Dec 16 - 03:05 PM In HM Prisons, the inmates I visited seemed to avoid saying 'Christmas' and always used 'Crimbo'. I think it's because they found it very difficult being inside over the festive season and away from their families, and the very word made them sad. (I expect their victims weren't too chuffed either about being burgled, but that's another tale!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: keberoxu Date: 24 Dec 16 - 04:07 PM The thing that gets me about "X-mas" is pedantry, I suppose: I always think: but it's Saint Andrew's Cross that is an X, rather than.... never mind. |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: JennieG Date: 24 Dec 16 - 06:00 PM Happy Thingmas and Seasonal Whatevers to all, no matter where you are or what you celebrate! |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Pete from seven stars link Date: 24 Dec 16 - 06:27 PM I think the X comes from the first Greek letter of 'Christ ' so it still refers to him as an abbreviation . |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Steve Shaw Date: 24 Dec 16 - 06:45 PM The word is Christmas and I won't use "Xmas." Why should I. In the same way I dislike things such as "thanx" or, even worse, "thx" on message boards. It's polite to avoid absurdities when typing stuff for a forum. Text language is a different thing altogether. I use it and I like it! |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: keberoxu Date: 25 Dec 16 - 11:21 AM and JennieG, thank you for some of the funniest posts on the Rap for Emperor thread in the persona of Imperial Torturer and Dungeon Choir Wrangler. The laughs were badly needed this past year. |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Donuel Date: 25 Dec 16 - 11:47 AM Warm and merry Christmas day to the UK unusual suspects whose ancestors tossed out the Puritans who banned Christmas celebration and sent them over here. Thanks a lot, now they have evolved into some alt reality that is pro commercial and anti diversity crowd. Merry Xmas Joe, so what Steve, Roger congrats on an amazing 100 anos and to all , the strength to hope with love beyond the reach of any fear or despair Machiavellians dream up. A fond and happy Christmas with song all year long. |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Mr Red Date: 25 Dec 16 - 12:26 PM The word is Christmas and I won't use "Xmas." Why should I. No should about it, BUT..... Someone, of this parish, already pointed-out, and I like the sentiment: X in Xmas is for the undetermined quantity. EG Hanukkah, Diwali, Ramadan, Samhain, and maybe Imbolc, Beltane and Lughnasadh. It is a catchall for non-Christians. Which is why I, tongue in cheek say Dawkinsmas, in lieu of any suitable appellation for Atheists. |
Subject: RE: BS: Merry Wossname From: Steve Shaw Date: 25 Dec 16 - 02:20 PM I'm an atheist and I'm fine with "Christmas." |
