I've been researching all the songs in the Rise Up Singing Songbook. I've learned a lot in the process. Peter Paul and Mary had a PBS television special and a box set titled Carry It On but I don't think they ever recorded the song of that title. The song was written by Gil Turner (1933-1974), and published in 1964. It was popularized in recordings by Joan Baez and Judy Collins.

Here are the lyrics from the Rise Up Singing

CARRY IT ON
(Gil Turner)

There's a man by my side walking
There's a voice inside me talking
There's a word that needs a-saying
Carry it on, carry it on
Carry it on, carry it on

They will tell their lying stories
Send their dogs to bite our bodies
They will lock us in their prisons
Carry it on, carry it on
Carry it on, carry it on

All their lies be soon forgotten
All their dogs are gonna lie there rotting
All their prison walls will crumble
Carry it on, carry it on
Carry it on, carry it on

If you can't go on any longer
Take the hand of your sister and your brother
Every victory's gonna bring another
Carry it on, carry it on
Carry it on, carry it on

New verses by Marion Wade:

For the dream never-ending
You can hear the voices blending
Loud and clear, their echoes sending
Carry it on, carry it on (2x)

Through the air the song is winging
Down the years, hope keeps springing
No more tears, we're still singing
Carry it on, carry it on
Carry it on, carry it on

Here are the lyrics from Issue 45 (May 15, 1964) of Broadside Magazine:

CARRY IT ON
(Gil Turner)

There's a man by my side a-walkin'
There's a voice inside me a-talkin'
There's a word needs a-sayin'
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

They will tell their lyin' stories
Send their dogs to bite our bodies
They will lock us in their prison
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

All their lies be soon forgotten
All their dogs - dogs are gonna lie there rottin'
All their prison walls will crumble
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

If you can't - can't go on any longer
Take the hand - hand held by your brother
Every victory gonna bring another
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

Since many of us learned this song from the Judy Collins Fifth Album, here's the version from the Judy Collins Songbook (page 130), published by Grosset & Dunlap, 1969

CARRY IT ON
(Gil Turner)

There's a man by my side a-walkin',
There's a voice within me talkin'
There's a word that's needin' sayin',
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

They will tell their lyin' stories,
Send their dogs to bite our bodies,
They will lock us in their prison,
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

Oh, their dogs will lie there rottin',
All their lies will be forgotten,
All their prison walls will crumble,
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

If you can't go on any longer,
Take the hand held by your brother,
Every victory going to bring another.
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

There's a man by my side walkin',
There's a voice within me talkin'
It's a word that needs a-sayin',
Carry it on, carry it on,
Carry it on, carry it on.

And it's a book too.

Pete Seeger and Bob Reiser - Carry It On Paperback – October, 1991

The Story Of America's Working People In Song And Picture Carry It On tells the story of working people in America and how they lived, loved, worshipped, and fought for their rights.

The book is built around 85 songs which capture vividly the experiences and struggles of American working people from old standards like 'Bread And Roses' and 'Solidarity Forever,' to newer anthems like 'Des Colores' and 'Rise Again.'

The songs combine with text, photographs, and illustrations to create a moving and vivid history of the American labor force from the American Revolution to this day.
