Subject: anniversaries: in Chile From: keberoxu Date: 18 Dec 16 - 12:05 PM Violeta Parra, composer and songwriter, was born in October 1917 in Chile. The press is already carrying announcements of plans for commemorating the Parra "centenario" in the coming year. The Chilean band Inti-Illimani, at the same time, is observing 50 years since its founding. As an earlier Mudcat thread documents, Inti-Illimani has survived, although not in one piece: there are now two bands, after a bitter 'divorce' with arbitration to settle differences. A new thread notes that "Inti-Illimani Historico" has its own way of observing the 50th birthday, that of broadening to international collaboration, as in their recording from Cuba. The "Inti-Illimani" band maintained by brothers Jorge and Marcelo Coulon, on the other hand, is staying closer to home, and has thrown itself into the Violeta Parra Centennial, scheduling performances in those Chilean locales with particular associations with the Parra family. Both musical anniversaries, therefore, are relevant to this thread. |
Subject: RE: 2017: Violeta Parra Centennial From: keberoxu Date: 18 Dec 16 - 12:22 PM I have not seen the film, "Violeta se fue a los cielos," released five years ago. Has anyone here seen the film? It proved a little divisive, I have read, in the surviving family. The film draws largely on the memoirs of Angel Parra, one of two adult children, who lived and worked closely with his mother. A Spanish-speaking journalist reports that Angel's sister, Isabel Parra, found the film about her mother difficult to accept. |

Subject: RE: 2017: Violeta Parra Centennial From: keberoxu Date: 18 Dec 16 - 10:33 PM Angel and Isabel Parra, the children of Violeta Parra, are now rather elderly as you might suppose from their mother's 'Centenario.' Since their mother's passing, both in their different ways have participated in performances and events celebrating Violeta Parra. For example, the now-deceased Chilean composer Luis Advis composed a musical work, "Canto para una semilla," in memory of Violeta Parra; and when it was first recorded, one of the vocal parts was assumed by Isabel Parra. The press reports, regarding the Centenario, that "Canto para una semilla" will be presented in public again. This time the family performing connection will be continued by Javiera Parra, the daughter of Angel Parra, and by Tita Parra, the daughter of Isabel Parra. For the little interest it has, it may be noted that officially, the last names of these descendants are not limited to "Parra". Isabel Parra, for example, has a maiden name of Violeta Isabel Cereceda Parra; her younger brother has a birthname of Luis Angel Cereceda Parra. And the latter has a son, Angel Cereceda Orrego, who also became a professional musician, calling himself Angel Parra, and nicknamed "el padrino," the godfather (? can't explain that). Remarkably, one relative just observed his 102nd birthday, very much alive: Violeta Parra's big brother Nicanor Parra, a poet of distinction. You would be correct in guessing that Angel Parra's daughter has a maiden name of Javiera Cereceda Orrego; this is one of the scheduled future performers in "Canto para una semilla." Tita Parra, Isabel's daughter, has a maiden name of Cristina Isabel Parra Cereceda. |
