Several recordings from the 1910s (click) attribute the song to a James I. Russell. For commercial recordings of other eras, click here

Not much about him easily available on the web. He was an Irish-American vaudeville performer, born 1859 and deceased 1914. You can see the original sheet music (dated 1906) here

Is this traditional? or is there a composer? Am having some trouble tracking down a commercial recording (some home-made versions on YouTube)

Shannon River, as performed by Cavan O'Connor:

Though my feet are planted in a far off land
There is somewhere they would rather be
Faith, tis planted firmly in the dark brown sand
Where the Shannon River meets the sea.

My heart is e'er returning to my darling
Whose blue eyes mean all the world to me
Sure, tis heaven and someone placed an angel there
Where the Shannon River meets the sea.

Though my father told me other lands were fair
I'm afraid with him I can't agree
For I always long to breathe the scented air
Where the Shannon River meets the sea.

There are no lips so sweet and so beguiling
As the lips that, sure, belong to me
Though I go on roaming, faith, my heart remains
Where the Shannon River meets the sea.
