Flo and Eddie (Volman and Kaylan) had a deep understanding of the popular 2 1/2 minute hit song of the 50s and 60s (doo-wop roots and all), as evidenced in the following:

Let Me Make Love To You
Tears Began to Fall

The new 2 CD single collection is probably the best these records have ever sounded...

[allowing for the age and condition of the surviving master tapes..]

In the UK these reissue CDs are by no means cheap, but a justifiable xmas & new years treat.

.. the LP reissue box set is nearly 60 quid.

"Elenore" may have been a moderate Top Ten score, as in "not number one," but in my childhood that darned tune was in heavy rotation on the AM radio stations, in the car driving or wherever. And Kaplan is spot on about the production -- for pop music it really jumped out of the car radio speakers and grabbed you by the ears. I haven't heard it played in years, but in my memory it sounds as vivid as ever.

Re "Elenore", from the song's Wikipedia page:

The band recorded "Elenore" as a parody of the type of happy-go-lucky pop songs they themselves had been performing, but with deliberately clichéd and slapdash lyrics such as: "Your looks intoxicate me / Even though your folks hate me / There's no one like you, Elenore, really"; and "Gee, I think you're swell / And you really do me well / You're my pride and joy, et cetera..." Howard Kaylan later said:

Elenore was a parody of "Happy Together." It was never intended to be a straight-forward song. It was meant as an anti-love letter to White Whale [Records], who were constantly on our backs to bring them another "Happy Together." So I gave them a very skewed version. Not only with the chords changed, but with all these bizarre words. It was my feeling that they would listen to how strange and stupid the song was and leave us alone. But they didn't get the joke. They thought it sounded good. Truthfully, though, the production on "Elenore" WAS so damn good. Lyrically or not, the sound of the thing was so positive that it worked. It certainly surprised me.

And I never knew it was "Elenore," I always heard Helena, but what do I know. That one had witty lyrics.

I found an archive of an old "Official" Turtles Website, http://web.archive.org/web/20060407093317/http://www.theturtles.com/lyrics.html.
In my memory, the Turtles had two hits, "Happy Together" and "You Baby." Anybody remember more?

"Happy" has been posted elsewhere (see links above). To further annoy our Guest, here's "You Baby."

Anonymous GUEST @ 1:57, it's impossible to determine from your comment whether you specifically consider The Turtles unworthy of discussion, or you disapprove of "non-folk" music in general.

If the former, I would call to your attention the fact that, when The Turtles disbanded, Frank Zappa recruited three of the band's members for his own Mothers of Invention. And Frank didn't exactly have a reputation for hiring no-talent dipshits.

If the latter, please try to resist the temptation to open threads whose subjects you know beforehand will not meet your criteria for worthiness.

Happy Together & You Know She'd Rather Be With Me were two of my favourites. I thought Eve Of Destruction was a hit for Barry McGuire however the Turtles may have done ha cover version. I don't know.
