Subject: RE: BBC - Attenborough & Song Hunter From: GUEST Date: 30 Dec 16 - 05:31 PM It is good that recordings are being released from the dusty archives of the Beeb. At least they weren't junked like so many of their programmes were in the 1950/60/70/80/90s. And did you know that the Beeb has just wiped out over 172 of its specialist websites? http://www.missing-episodes.com/ http://missingepisodes.proboards.com/ https://wipednews.com/ http://missingepisodes.proboards.com/thread/11898/archivist-saves-172-deleted-websites Much of what got deleted - AND STILL IS - is Folk orientated. Subject: RE: BBC - Attenborough & Song Hunter From: GUEST,henryp Date: 30 Dec 16 - 01:11 PM David Attenborough's interest is Life on Earth. It was his brother - in 10 Rillington Place - who revealed an interest in dying. |
Subject: RE: BBC - Attenborough & Song Hunter From: Jim Carroll Date: 30 Dec 16 - 12:29 PM Wonder if anybody saw that a cover article in one of the newspapers described folk music as yet another of Attenborough's interests in a dying species? Discuss - or maybe not! Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: BBC - Attenborough & Song Hunter From: GUEST,henryp Date: 28 Dec 16 - 06:55 AM I listened to it in Balham. And he played a recording of Margaret Barry from the Bedford Arms - the one in Balham, I presume. We spent Christmas in the company of David Attenborough on the Yesterday channel. |

Subject: RE: BBC - Attenborough & Song Hunter From: GUEST,Peterr Date: 27 Dec 16 - 08:53 AM Just looked up a link I had to a 2014 R2 broadcast about 'Song Hunter'. Annoyingly I never got round to listening to it, but the description of what was done 60 years ago is fascinating. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03trp25 |

Subject: RE: BBC - Attenborough & Song Hunter From: GUEST,Dave Date: 26 Dec 16 - 01:54 PM When I were a lad, about 1960, there was an upsurge of interest the Paraguayan harp in the UK, and I can remember a Paraguayan band coming to a nearby village for the fete. I doubt that they had ever been near Paraguay really, but it was a revelation, we didn't get much in the way of folk tunes from non-English speaking regions then. They played, I am sure "Pajaro Campana" and "La Llegada". The second, by Enrique Samaniego, was very familiar, as it was the theme music for David Attenborough's "Zoo Quest in Paraguay", which I am convinced was the main reason for the interest in Paraguayan music. |

Subject: BBC - Attenborough & Song Hunter From: GUEST,ChrisJBrady Date: 25 Dec 16 - 10:53 AM BBC Alert: Sir David Attenborough – World Music Collector It's not well known, but while searching for Komodo dragons and birds-of-paradise for his Natural History programmes, Sir David Attenborough recorded the musical performances of the people he encountered... From Gamelan orchestras in Bali; Fijian chants to attract turtles from the depths of the ocean; Aboriginal didgeridoo recitals; even the singing that encouraged boys to bungee jump with only vines attached to their ankles, Attenborough tells the stories of his World Music recordings that have lain in the BBC's vaults for nearly 60 years. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4WClDKs9zQlF5H43f1JGyL0/sir-david-attenborough-world-music-collector You can join Sir David on his adventures through World Music on Christmas Day live on BBC Radio 3 or listen again online. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0857wv1 CJB |
