I'm a musician who plays several instruments, but I would appreciate help in finding a good 'how to play' book for the mandolin. Since my brother gave me a mandolin for Christmas, naturally I need help. I love bluegrass, folk & classical styles of Music and can read music. I'd love to find a book with fun tunes in any or all of the above genres of Music. I'm having fun noodling around on it, and I know the note names of the strings, but I want to be able to read music for mandolin. Can anyone out there help me? Thanks! Jennifer in San Diego

I'm also a multi-instrumentalist who took up the mandolin a few years back and the best learning resource I've come across, hands down, is
mandolessons.com. It's a website, not a book, but it has videos and PDF's of very high quality with tab and standard notation. It also has lots of tunes from various trad genres and a bunch of technique tutorials. The site is very user friendly and is free with the option of making voluntary donations. I just can't say enough good things about it and I've made astounding progress since I started using it.

Jennifer - Standard Mando tuning is same as violin , so a book of Fiddle Tunes would be OK . And the Chords are same as bottom four strings of guitar but upside down - G D A E instead of E A D G .
I am also Multi Inst , but cursed with a very good ear and total idleness , so I don't really read music . I hope you get as much fun out of your Mamdo as I do !

I swear by the Mandolin Picker's Fakebook by David Brody:

"Over 250 jigs, reels and hornpipes from the British Isles and the USA. Includes breakdowns, rags and marches from Scotland and Nova Scotia/Cape Breton, Texas Style and much more. Spiral Bound."

I have it - it's great.

I believe Nigel Gatherer's website has information and advice for mandolin players? (I know a mandolin maker who swears by the site!)

...and some who swear at it, Gallus Moll?

There is a series of "lessons" on my website which give the basics, free to everyone. Start here:

One of the best books I've seen is Simon Mayor's Mandolin Tutor.
