Nice surprise on Jools Holland hootenanny! Love 'em both!
Happy new year!

one of the best performances on an otherwise creaky and stale piss smelling old folks home new years party...

Proof that cross cultural generation & music fusion can work effectively and be greater than the excellent constituent parts... 😎

I might have to watch that bit on your recommendations. I usually avoid the annual Hootenanny - filmed in September, by the way - because of its fake bonhomie. We caught the end of it by mistake last night and saw some very neither-here-nor-there piano playing from Jools Holland, with the rest of the band all playing tambourines...

Filmed in September? Dammit, what a major bummer! Seasick Steve was a treat every time he came on and the dancing was great.

Saw a fair bit of it, but the only bits that I found interesting were Seasick Steve's appearances...otherwise, as PFR says, it was creaky and stale.

Strange, as I know two (in their 30s) people who went to the recording in September and they were so enthused about it that I felt I had to watch (I actually gave up on it a few years ago). Maybe the atmosphere of actually being there improves it?

I also quite liked the 2 French artists..

but must confess I have a fondness for Euro electro swing dance music...

.. Roy Wood.. i've been a Move / Roy Wood fan since I was about 12 ...

It was a pleasure to see him enjoy performing with such a big band..

probably a very long time since he last had record label advance cash to fund that kind of creative indulgence..

The Roy Wood performance was OK....I too liked "Move" as a yoof. But I was fed up by then of almost *everything* being "big band backed" so didn't find it as enjoyable as I might otherwise....another reason Seasick Steve was refreshing.

Roy Wood had most of his royalties nicked by the well documented 'Move' v. Management v. Harold Wilson debacle. It's a wonder he's still going at all. However it's a new year etc. ...

Had a job locating Hannah's clogging and Jools didn't even know her name though he did acknowledge her as the best clogger he had had on this year (2016) ~ clogging of this standard must be as physically exhausting as running a mile in 5 minutes

She is a star of the current folk scene as a singer, accordionist, clogger and professional folk entertainer ~ and probably lucky to be 5ft tall

I liked it, best Hootenanny for a few years. Been a big fan of Woody (grew up near where his and the ELO lads came from) for years and seen him a few times and he is always acres of fun. A massively underrated singer and songwriter, influential to this day though.
