Subject: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 31 Dec 16 - 09:15 PM Nice surprise on Jools Holland hootenanny! Love 'em both! Happy new year! |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: punkfolkrocker Date: 31 Dec 16 - 10:50 PM one of the best performances on an otherwise creaky and stale piss smelling old folks home new years party... Proof that cross cultural generation & music fusion can work effectively and be greater than the excellent constituent parts... 😎 |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 01 Jan 17 - 03:57 AM OK! So you enjoyed it then? |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: Will Fly Date: 01 Jan 17 - 04:01 AM I might have to watch that bit on your recommendations. I usually avoid the annual Hootenanny - filmed in September, by the way - because of its fake bonhomie. We caught the end of it by mistake last night and saw some very neither-here-nor-there piano playing from Jools Holland, with the rest of the band all playing tambourines... |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: Steve Shaw Date: 01 Jan 17 - 04:20 AM Filmed in September? Dammit, what a major bummer! Seasick Steve was a treat every time he came on and the dancing was great. |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: Rob Naylor Date: 01 Jan 17 - 04:32 AM Saw a fair bit of it, but the only bits that I found interesting were Seasick Steve's appearances...otherwise, as PFR says, it was creaky and stale. Strange, as I know two (in their 30s) people who went to the recording in September and they were so enthused about it that I felt I had to watch (I actually gave up on it a few years ago). Maybe the atmosphere of actually being there improves it? |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: punkfolkrocker Date: 01 Jan 17 - 05:34 AM I also quite liked the 2 French artists.. but must confess I have a fondness for Euro electro swing dance music... .. Roy Wood.. i've been a Move / Roy Wood fan since I was about 12 ... It was a pleasure to see him enjoy performing with such a big band.. probably a very long time since he last had record label advance cash to fund that kind of creative indulgence.. |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: Rob Naylor Date: 01 Jan 17 - 06:39 AM The Roy Wood performance was OK....I too liked "Move" as a yoof. But I was fed up by then of almost *everything* being "big band backed" so didn't find it as enjoyable as I might otherwise....another reason Seasick Steve was refreshing. |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: GUEST,Nick Dow Date: 01 Jan 17 - 07:57 AM Roy Wood had most of his royalties nicked by the well documented 'Move' v. Management v. Harold Wilson debacle. It's a wonder he's still going at all. However it's a new year etc. ... |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: GUEST,padgett Date: 02 Jan 17 - 05:15 AM Had a job locating Hannah's clogging and Jools didn't even know her name though he did acknowledge her as the best clogger he had had on this year (2016) ~ clogging of this standard must be as physically exhausting as running a mile in 5 minutes She is a star of the current folk scene as a singer, accordionist, clogger and professional folk entertainer ~ and probably lucky to be 5ft tall Ray |
Subject: RE: Hannah James Dancing to Seasick Steve From: Stu Date: 02 Jan 17 - 07:23 AM I liked it, best Hootenanny for a few years. Been a big fan of Woody (grew up near where his and the ELO lads came from) for years and seen him a few times and he is always acres of fun. A massively underrated singer and songwriter, influential to this day though. |
