I'm not a great fan of 'Holby City', but suddenly last night, there were Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer playing at a Swedish-style wedding. Unless it was another of the UK's well-known nyckelharpa players, of course.....

I was one of the dancers. Word went out that they wanted extras able to do some Swedish dancing, though in the end it was only a schottis. There were umpteen takes, with the cameras in different positions. Some of the time we were dancing to a previously made recording while Vicki and Jonny mimed, and on one or two of the takes we were dancing to silence -- which is our excuse if we seem to be out of time with the music at any point. The whole experience was "interesting".

The Society for International Folk Dancing supplied most of the costumes including mine, but mine was a Telemark one because none of the Swedish ones would fit round my paunch.

I remember one of the performers at Moira festival commenting that he thought it was a nipple hardener...

Thanks for the info, Richard. It's interesting to hear how a TV show is made.

Holby City is a British soap opera set in the hospital at a town called Holby City. The show is a spin-off from another show called Casualty. I think it's unusual and delightful to have nyckelharpa and folk dancing on such a show. I wish I could see it.

and the Dyer/Swan Christmas show is well worth catching, ideal for a folk club or any Christmas bash come to that.

It would have been Jonny that said nipple hardner :/
I've tried to wean him off saying that!

Will there be any Scandi at Cambridge IVFDF I wonder? Jonny & Vicki will be there as part of Purcell's Polyphonic Party (Playford & very English)

Wish I'd known about the call for Swedish Dancer - we go to the dance that Bristol Spelmanslag put on once a year (plus things in Ikea)

Is the prog made in areal of Brisel? - Casualty was years ago.

I think Casualty and Holby City are both filmed in Cardiff now.... thanks for the info, Richard (I managed to catch a couple of shots of you when I watched on catch-up!)

Hello,
Holby City is filmed at Elstree Studios in London. The wedding was shot on location at Micklefield Hall, so not near Bristol. We were just in charge of the music. I don't know how the team of dancers were selected, but Megan did an amazing job co-ordinating it, the dancing looks amazing I think and it was such a pleasure to play for them. Kaisa (one of the actresses posted an instagram clip of a bit o the dance rehearsal. I think it shows the fun vibe we had going.. Instragram Clip
:)
