I have a midgrade Guild on which the high "E" string rolls off the fret when I play. I inspected the nut, and with just my eye, I can see that the gap between that notch for that string and the one for the "B" string is wider than the other gaps. So to fix the problem, I suspect that I will need to replace the nut with one that has proper string spacing.

I am medium handy with tools. I *have* successfully installed under-the-saddle pickups before with no obvious resulting problems. However, I think that this repair may be a bit more sensitive.

Also, if I plan to keep this guitar, might it behoove me to get one made of bone, or fossilized something or other as the replacement? Thanks for any ideas.

A guitar nut replacement is a fairly simple job. If you are not confident about doing it yourself ask at a guitar shop for a quote. If you are getting a replacement then bone makes good sense. It shouldn't cost the earth.

Second that recommendation from Guest above. What have you got to lose? A tiny tube of cyanoacrylate and maybe some filings of hard plastic?
