Subject: Shirley Collins on BBC Radio 4 From: Herga Kitty Date: 17 Jan 17 - 12:20 PM While travelling from London to Dorset this afternoon I heard part of a programme in which the audience were asking Shirley Collins about her "Love, Death and the Lady" album with Dolly, and she also performed a couple of songs with Dave Arthur and Pete Cooper. Can be heard here There's a link to the first programme about the album too! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Shirley Collins on BBC Radio 4 From: GUEST,surreysinger(sans cookie) Date: 17 Jan 17 - 12:35 PM Actually Kitty, that's a link to the first programme about Love Death and the Lady, which went out last night (the A programme). The programme which went out this afternoon was the B programme - the audience was not confined to asking about Love Death and the Lady, but were able to ask Shirley questions about anything - and there was some concentration on the songs in her new CD "Lodestone". This afternoon's programme can be found here Both programmes are also available as podcasts - and according to the website will be available indefinitely. :-) It was an interesting and fun afternoon at the recording in early December. |

Subject: RE: Shirley Collins on BBC Radio 4 From: Herga Kitty Date: 17 Jan 17 - 02:00 PM Thanks Irene - I realised after I'd posted the link that it highlights the A programme rather than the B one. I missed some of this afternoon's programme because I stopped at Winchester services, so will have to listen to both of them on I-player! Kitty |

Subject: RE: Shirley Collins on BBC Radio Wales From: FreddyHeadey Date: 16 Jul 18 - 01:48 PM Finding My Voice BBC Radio Wales - June 2018 ”When the legendary folk singer Shirley Collins was betrayed by her husband, her inimitable voice also began to let her down. Her career was in pieces for nearly forty years... until an old song from the Welsh border brought back the pure, yet earthy tones which had once turned thousands of rock fans into folk fans. Phil Rickman met her at the Hay Festival and uncovered a story as haunting as a dark traditional ballad.” https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b7y0fn ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ bbc iPlayer Radio app http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3yvdp3zQJWLtl204z9nxgRt/download-the-iplayer-radio-app (then click the '+' on the programme's web page then on the app click Menu > My Radio > Listen Later) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Subject: RE: Shirley Collins on BBC Radio 4 From: FreddyHeadey Date: 12 Apr 21 - 05:15 PM Outlook (World Service) 12 April 2021 - 40 min - available for over one year The break-up that cost me my voice "Shirley Collins grew up in a folk music-loving family in Sussex, England, during World War Two, and announced her intention to become a folk singer when she was still just a teenager. Her career would lead her to record music with her sister Dolly; to record folk songs in America with legendary song collector Alan Lomax, and to become a key figure in the 'folk revival' of the 1960s and 1970s. But the trauma of a painful break-up cost Shirley her singing voice - "sometimes I would open my mouth and nothing would come out", she remembers - and led to a heartbreaking decision: "I walked away from music for years. I felt I had no option." Shirley did all sorts of jobs to support her children, and avoided even listening to music sometimes - it made her too sad. Then one day, the musician David Tibet, a huge fan, got in touch and begged Shirley to try to sing again. Shirley tells Emily Webb the story of a voice lost and found again."
