Bowie stamps

It really is a marketing ploy. But it makes me uncomfortable, hero worship in a musical context is one thing but there has to be a sense of proportion.
What was his contribution to the world beyond music? And body art?

Well we have a pic of the Queen on every bloody stamp issued for decades, not to speak of coins and banknotes, and she's no hero of mine. Give me Bowie any day!

.. well.. ermmm.. dare we ask that same question about any song and dance performer....???

.. or any actor, or fine artist.. ?? - for Bowie also made a mark in these creative cultural activities...

I've just been watching a documentary about the invention of the machine gun and it's devastating effect on the course of world history.
Maybe I should google if Mr Maxim also had a go at performing folk and parlour songs for his circle of acquaintances moral edification & amusement....????? 🙄

Now then, a list of notable world shaping individuals who were equally a dab hand at music...

errrmm.. Nero

errrmmm....????

I have nothing against David Bowie, a very fine artist ! However if I were going to honour a musician with a stamp, it would be Kate Bush, a hugely influential artist and an inspiration for many female artists. She, like Bowie, was a true innovator but being a woman kept her from getting the recognition she deserved, I think. So why not a female artist ?

Because she hasn't died yet?

I don't think you have to be dead to be on a stamp, Do you ?

He's probably one of the usual suspects, Jim. 😉

How about Victoria Wood.

Mary Millington, Fiona Richmond, and similar notable British women pioneers from the 1970s... 😎

.. actually when all is said and done.. I can't remember when I last bought or used a stamp... definitely a few years ago....

I buy stamps but I never see 'em. Reason? In our house it's "Oh, Steve, you haven't got a stamp I can borrow, have you?"

"Borrow." That's a bloody laugh is that!

So why not a female artist?

I have a stamp of piano accordion player Mairearad Green.

And while we're collecting musicians, I also have The Chieftains, The Dubliners, The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem, and Altan on a stamp set.

Thanks Reinhard, I have a concertina-playing friend who collects stamps, I'll tell her about this set
