Satirist Andy Borowitz shared a lovely poem by Michael F. Dubois. Since many poems can be turned into songs, I'll share the link (I can't get a transcription by copying text because it's a photo, not a PDF).

If They Call Me A Domestic Terrorist

Here he speaks it on Instagram.

Here is a photo of the printed poem.

A friend on Facebook shared a link to a song by Tom Smith called "Fight Back With A Song" about this protest era. It's a gentle song, not an anthem, but it has a place in all of this.

Well, heck, this is Premiere Weekend, when the long-awaited documentary film Melania is released.

But hey, why pay to watch the movie when you can hear the song, "I Am Melania"?

As songs so, it's kinda lame - but it has some good lines here and there.

Here's an appropriate parody by a friend of mine:

AMERICAN DEMOCRACY IS ALMOST OVER
parody of Steve Goodman’s The 20th Century Is Almost Over
by Charles Roth

Back in 1939, Hitler started singing his Ein, Ein, Ein
100 days of Trump, & we're back in that time, yes every boy and girl
Now there's only one thing that I'd like to know
Where did American democracy go?
I'd swear it was here just a minute ago / All over this land

Chorus:
And now American democracy is
Almost over (x3)
American democracy is almost over
All over this land
American democracy is almost over
All over this land

Does anyone remember the Great Depression?
Neither Xi nor Putin makin' any concessions
Read all about the on-coming recession
'Less the tariffs get put on hold
Has anybody seen my lithium ores
Silicon wafers, or Rare Earth stores
They got stuck in the MAGA trade wars / All over this land

Winters getting warmer, summers getting hotter
The southwest states are runnin' out of water
Mother Earth's fryin' cause somebody oughter
Save the planet 'stead of flyin' to Mars!
Tell me how you gonna harvest crops on the farm
Since immigrant workers have lost their charm
I-C-E set off a burglar alarm
Xenophobia's gone too far!

Cory Booker's best is long filibuster yappin'
SCOTUS barely gave Trump's knuckles a rappin'
Everybody's waiting for their arrest to happen
Tell me if it happens to you!
Election Day proved a real disaster
We traded cheaper eggs for an ego-centric master
If you duck your part we'll lose a little faster
All over this land!

Stilly River Sage - thanks and well done for finding and sharing the YouTube link (I did find some of the other videos you mentioned on YT, but not the one I was trying to share).

Bev - nice!

Guest - the song is about Trump, as he so clearly wants to be a king (remember the AI pics the White House shared last January of him wearing a crown?). Hopefully, "We don't do kings" and the references to TACO ("Trump Always Chickens Out") and "every single state" were clues, as well...

    We Shall Throw Tr**p Out....

Feel free to use them and add some more and SING!

There's a lot more at the YouTube link, including this alliance between polar bears and penguins. Quite anthemic. The Arctic and Antarctic creatures are only found together to fight Trump. :)

And here's another one of mine:

God Save (us from) the King
new words by Vikki Appleton Fielden ©17 June 2025

God save us from the King
Don’t let him touch a thing
God stay the King
Send him felonious
So disharmonious
To someplace incommodious
God stay the King

God save us from the King
It’s time to march and sing
“We don’t do kings!"
Put on your TACO hat
Veto his coup d'etat
We won’t support an autocrat
We don’t do kings

God save us from the King
We won’t be worshiping
We don’t do kings
See every single state
Spurn his campaign of hate
That’s how the people demonstrate
We don’t do kings

Here's another song (with a video, very well done) about Trump and Greenland: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1HZbyKEPUZ/

(I tried to make a blue clicky; but I've tried on my phone and on my computer and I end up with an error message on both – maybe because it's on fb? Have looked to see if it's on YouTube or somewhere else but can't find it, so if you want to see it, you'll have to copy the link and paste it into your browser. It's worth it, though.)

Joe, I looked up Hans Island. According to Wikipedia:
"Hans Island... is an island in the centre of the Kennedy Channel of the Nares Strait in the high Arctic region, split between the Canadian territory of Nunavut and the Danish rigsdel (autonomous territory) of Greenland."

From PEOPLE this morning, 16 January 2026.

This is SAD. I’m sitting here. Alone. In the War Room. Fighting for you. The rest of the staff went home hours ago. It’s just me, one dying laptop, and the 17-hour countdown clock to my first mid-month deadline of the year just RANG. We are going to have to ACT FAST!
If we don't crush my first mid-month deadline of the year, the radical Left flips the House and Senate in 2026 and finishes what they started: Open borders forever. Your guns confiscated. Your kids brainwashed.
And worst of all, your favorite President (ME!) might just go through another FAKE impeachment!”

                                https://politicalemails.org/messages/2061015

(I didn’t make any of that up. - Lady M)

(But this I did:)

Alone in the War Room
Tune: Acres of Clams or any good tune

I've been punching buttons since midnight.
Should I hit the one called REFRESH?
RFK says my body is godlike!
Karoline - who the hell is Ganesh?

Send money or else they'll impeach me
And confiscate all of your guns
They’ll let all those rapists and criminals in
And brainwash your daughters and sons.

Midterm elections are coming
I think they're some time in the fall
If we should lose them, then MAGA is dead -
Lets not have elections at all.

A woke mind virus snuck in here
And left a big stain on my pants
So I'll go to war against Denmark
Iran, Minnesota and France.

Greenland is mine ‘cause I need it.
To build a Trump skiing resort
A golf course, a pool. It will be so cool!
And that’s why I need your support.

Alone in the war room I sit in the dark
My laptop just fell off my knee
No one to pick this thing off of the floor
And no one to pity poor me.

(10 ethnopoints to any scholar who can pinpoint the song wherefrom I swiped the last line.)

From: Joe Offer

Not my idea, but it's so fitting. This song was recorded by the band called "Sweet."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqketmsRz1E

BALLROOM BLITZ
(Chapman/Chinn)

Are you ready, Steve? (Uh-huh)
Andy? (Yeah)
Mick? (Okay)
Alright, fellas, well, let's go

Well, it's been getting so hard
Living with the things you did to me, ah-ha
My dreams are getting so strange
I'd like to tell you everything I see

Oh, I see a man at the back
As a matter of fact, his eyes are as red as a sun
And the girl in the corner, let no one ignore her
'Cause she thinks she's the passionate one

Oh, yeah, it was like lightning
Everybody was frightening
And the music was soothing
And they all started grooving
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

And the man at the back said, "Everyone, attack"
And it turned into a ballroom blitz
And the girl in the corner said, "Boy, I wanna warn ya
It'll turn into a ballroom blitz"

Ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz

I'm reaching out for something
Touching nothing's all I ever do
Oh, I softly call you over
When you appear, there's nothing left of you, ah-ha

Now the man in the back is ready to crack
As he raises his hands to the sky
And the girl in the corner is everyone's mourner
She could kill you with a wink of her eye

Oh, yeah, it was electric
So frantically hectic
And the band started leaving
'Cause they all stopped breathing
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

And the man at the back said, "Everyone, attack"
And it turned into a ballroom blitz
And the girl in the corner said, "Boy, I wanna warn ya"
"It'll turn into a ballroom blitz"
Ballroom blitz

Oh, yeah, it was like lightning
Everybody was frightening
And the music was soothing
And they all started grooving
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

And the man at the back said, "Everyone, attack"
And it turned into a ballroom blitz
And the girl in the corner said, "Boy, I wanna warn ya
It'll turn into a ballroom blitz"

Ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz
Ballroom blitz
It's, it's the ballroom blitz
It's, it's the ballroom blitz
It's, it's the ballroom blitz
Yeah, it's the ballroom blitz

Well, today is another day for "No Kings" rallies all over the world. I have special concern for the beautiful City of Portland, Oregon, which is currently occupied by Trump's goons. The locals have responded with frogs and other cute animals. I don't quite get the significance of the frogs, but here's "The Ballad of the Portland Frog Brigade."

What happens when a giant frog, a chicken, a bear, and a unicorn take to the rainy streets of Portland?
You get The Frog Brigade — a hilarious, heart-warming, and foot-stompin’ country-folk anthem about standing up (and hopping up) for what’s right, with laughter leading the way!

This original song tells the true-to-life tale of the Portland Frog Protester — a peaceful demonstrator who used humor and a big green inflatable frog suit to bring smiles and sanity to serious times. It’s a story of courage, creativity, and the unstoppable spirit of joy that keeps Portland weird and wonderful.

“Ribbit, ribbit, let freedom sing — ain’t nothin’ so strong as a silly thing!”

Keep Portland Weird!

Shut your face
you disgrace
Support Trump in his next race
Our dear leader's skin is thinner
than a sheet of plastic wrap

Mums the word
Have you heard
Kissing ass is what's preferred
Don't insult our great dictator
Or he'll hit you with a turd.

The new rule at ABC
Don't make fun of Donny T
And don't point out that his neck is mostly flap

Don't make a scene
or mention Jeff Epstein
Shut your face Shut your face you disgrace.

[Verse 1]

D
MAGAs ain't easy to love and they're harder to hold
A7                                              D
They'd rather give you a lie than diamonds or gold
D                                              G
Bibles, belt buckles and old faded Levi's and each night begins a new day
         A7
If you don't understand him and he don't die young
                         D
He'll probably just fade away

[Chorus]

D                                          G
Mammas don't let your babies grow up to be MAGAs
      A7
Don't let 'em pick bad fights and shoot them old guns
                                  D
Let 'em be doctors and lawyers and such
D                                          G
Mammas don't let your babies grow up to be MAGAs
       A7
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
                      D
Even with someone they love

[Verse 2] (A tone higher)

E                                                    A
MAGAs like ol' Donald Trump and white Christian mornings
B7                                                    E
Little warm puppies, and children, and girls of the night
E                                                       A
Them that don't know him won't like him and them that do sometimes won't know how to take him
         B7
He ain't wrong, he's just different but his pride won't let him
                                     E
Do the things to make you think he's right

[Chorus]

D                                          G
Mammas don't let your babies grow up to be MAGAs
      A7
Don't let 'em pick bad fights and shoot them old guns
                                  D
Let 'em be doctors and lawyers and such
D                                          G
Mammas don't let your babies grow up to be MAGAs
       A7
They'll never stay home and they're always alone
                      D
Even with someone they love

This protest song Join ICE is short enough that transcribing it won't take long to the motivated listener. It has a hint of Arlo Guthrie.

On the Turning Away
Pink Floyd

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand

Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away

It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting its shroud
Over all we have known

Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud

On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite in a silent accord

Using words, you will find, are strange
Mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night

No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside

Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

Still a good'n, YorkshireYankee. I hereby suggest a follow-up on the lines of the Diddums-in-Chief declaring that the international dateline shall henceforth go down the middle of the Atlantic, so that he can start any particular day of the week before those pesky Europeans get their mitts on it.

Damn damn damn: now I've got "When it's Tuesday in Italy, it's Wednesday over here" running through my head, without even a tune. *Argh*, in spades.

Cool Beans, love your parody!

This one is past its prime already, and probably not suitable for marches, but I'll share it here anyway...

MAPMAKER
To the Tune of "Matchmaker"
by Sheldon Harnick & Jerry Bock
new words by Vikki Appleton
© 10 Feb 2025

Mapmaker, Mapmaker,
make me a map
Do as I say, fill it with crap
Mapmaker, Mapmaker,
be a good schnook
And make me a rubbish map

Mapmaker, Mapmaker,
I’ll bring the lies
You bring the map
for us to revise
Fill it with swill
for I’m longing to be
The Caesar of all I see

For Bannon, make it outrageous
For Elon, add a swastika too
Don’t think of being courageous
Just follow the orders I give to you

Mapmaker, Mapmaker, make me a map
Do as I say, fill it with crap
Day after day in DC I’m a drone
So make me a map all my own...

Donald, oh Donald, have I got a map for you
The countries and towns
Are all named after you
So it’s a nice plan, a good map, true?
True
It ought to make you happy
Your ego satisfy
Although it prob’ly won’t
Don’t ask me why

Did you think we’d make some prints?
Well, I do the best I can
With no wisdom, no morals,
       no sense of discretion
It’s mad you’ve got a plan!

Mapmaker, Mapmaker make it so good
I’ll tell you how, I know we could
I am a genius but misunderstood
So… crown me a king
Groom me for doom
Find me a mind
Map me some crap
And make me a hapless map!

(Many thanks to Joe Offer for the idea for this parody.)

Subject: RE: The Trump Uncivil War
From: Donuel
Date: 03 Jun 25 - 05:01 PM

War from my own country
Can you smell the fear?
Mercy
It doesn't exist
Blood
The measure of victory
Danger
You will be the next
hit by a bullet
Blinded by pain for a while

Suddenly, I am somewhere else
Trapped in fear, lost in the dark
Oh god, I need help
They have taken me
Blindfolded, tied hands
What am I doing here?
Taken
Turn into the enemy
Or be executed

Run from your President
There ain’t nowhere to go
Find a way
You’re not ready to die
Betray them
Choose freedom or loyalty
Try to escape
Or torture won't end

I can't stand this anymore
If I could, I'd shoot myself
I'm a fainting prisoner
Treason is the sentence
Ok, that's enough
I'll tell everything
Never wanted to do this
Forgive me, I have no choice

Taken
Turn into the enemy
Or be executed
Think twice
If you don't deserve to die
Join us Betrayer
You'll stay in the prison cell
You're not going anywhere
And your soul will gently burn
In hell

Fuck you all
You forced me to betray my motherland
I'll try to return to fight or recant my guilt
Now it's time to go back home
I've managed to escape the one man
nightmare about to begin
Begin the dream of the
Trump uncivil war

From: Donuel

Well, it's all wrong when crooks are as free as the breeze
Well, it's all wrong when rapists do as they please
Well, it's all right doing the best you can
Well, it's all right as long as you lend a hand
You can sit around and wait for the end of term (at the end of the line)
Waiting for someone to tell you the truth (at the end of the line, of the line)
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow will bring (at the end of the line)
Maybe a free jet plane
Well, it's all right even if they say you're wrong
Well, it's all right, sometimes you gotta be strong
Well, it's all wrong when its time to go but you stay
Well, it's all wrong, to break every rule everyday
Maybe somewhere down the road aways (at the end of the line)
You'll listen to reason one of these days (at the end of the line, of the line)
Maybe down the road you will hear the court and obey (at the end of the line)
Purple haze
Well, it's all wrong when push always comes to shove
Well, it's all wrong if you never know how to love
Well, it's all right, everything'll work out fine
Well, it's all right, we're going to the end of the line
Don't have to be ashamed of the country that thrives (at the end of the line)
I'm just glad to be here, happy to be alive (at the end of the line, of the line)
It don't matter what ever is your side (at the end of the line)
I'm satisfied
Well, it's all right even if you're old and gray
Well, it's all right, you still got something to say
Well, it's all wrong, if you can't live and let live
Well, it's all wrong, if you don't know how to forgive
Well, it's all right (all right), riding around on the breeze
Well, it's all right (all right), if you live the life you please
Well, it's all right, even if the sun don't shine
Well, it's all right (all right), we're going to the end of the line

This is probably the best song we've come up with for rallys, composed by Eli Dale of our sea music group Roll & Go:

Eli Dale March 2025 elidaleportland@gmail.com
Feel free to use and distribute.
Key: Cm (5/Gm)
Do Not Comply

Chorus
Am------G---Am----------------------G-----C-----Am
Do not com-ply! You'll only make them strong-er;
G
Do not comply! You'll only feed the hunger
C--G---Am----------------G--Am
Of the beast that would de-vour;
G----------------------C------------------G------C--G---Am
Now is the hour, to stand before the beast and say, "No!"

V.1
Am---------------------G
No, to the hatred of those who won’t conform
-----C
To some stupid gender norm;
---------    G-----------------------------------Am
We will raise a fearsome storm and say, "No!"

V.2
No, to the murder of those who need our care,
Left with only thoughts and prayers;
We will come from everywhere and say, "No!"

Chorus

V.3
No, to the erasure of those who are not white;
Who’ve been swept into the night;
We'll raise them to new heights and say, "No!"

V.4
No, to the destruction of this nation that provides
A safe place to live our lives;
There'll be no compromise when we say, "No!"

Chorus

V.5
No, to the Project where rich white men take it all;
Leave the rest of us to crawl;
We will tear down your walls and say, "No!"

We have to record Eli leading this song.

Charlie Ipcar

… No, I can't forget this evening
Or my business I'm bereaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
I always smile but in my eyes my sorrow shows
Yes, it shows
… No, I can't forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrows
When I had an income then I let it go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know
… I can't live, if living is with Trump tariffs
I can't live, I can't give any more
Can't live, if living is with Trump tariffs
… Can't live, if living is with Trump tariffs
I can't live, I can't give anymore
I can't live, if living is without you
I can't live, I can't give anymore

To the tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"

Taylor Swift’s no longer hot
She is ugly, short and squat
She can’t ride on Air Force One
She can’t shoot Don Junior’s gun
“Humph,” the Hippopotus sniffed
“No one’s hot for Taylor Swift.”

Re the song I posted on 28th January 2017, it needs updating to reflect the somewhat unforeseen second term of office.
I sang it again just last week, in a slightly revised version, as we had a dear American friend over here. She and her husband were fairly recent acquaintances when 8 years ago, I quietly asked them if they would mind if I sang a song about their President. “So long as it’s nothing complimentary “ was the reply! They both loved it.
I the meantime, the husband has sadly left this world, and we were having a wee session in remembrance of him, hence singing the song again.
By the way, I’m Mrs Tattie Bogle, not Mr.

Turning to the performers from a strong era of protest songs, Janis Ian has posted on Facebook about writing a song that she had an opportunity to sing with Joan Baez. Here is the start of the information:
A SONG FOR CHANGE
A few years ago I sat down with Jess Leary, one of my favorite co-writers, and we decided to write an anthem. It felt like the world was getting stranger every day. People were scared, feeling hopeless.
Writing "One In a Million" made us feel hopeful. It reminded us that no matter how hard things got, we were not alone.
We are one, we are one in a million
We are one in a million strong
In my darkest night, I hold on to that light
We are one in a million strong
A while later, I was asked to perform at a San Francisco event called "Fight the Right." When I found out Joan Baez would also be appearing, I asked if she'd sing it with me. Fortunately, Joan's a quick study, because we only had time for one short run through.
We sang it twice that night, with fellow musician Anthony Peterson helping out and the audience joining in as soon as they'd learned the chorus.
A short while ago Joan's long time personal assistant, Nancy Lutzow, let me know that she'd just uncovered a tape of us singing "One In a Million" at the San Francisco show. . .

One In A Million with a video added and mastering, on YouTube.
