Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: Steve Gardham Date: 11 Feb 17 - 04:45 PM Nearest local shipwreck tune I can get that fits this format is the one I use for 'Wreck of the Industry off Spurn'. It's closely related to 'Dark-eyed Sailor' I've adjusted the words to fit better but still not satisfied with it. I'll sing it over a few times and see what needs adjusting. Twas Christmas Eve in 72 The waves ran high and billows roared, The little Bluebird, a brig from Hull Was tossed upon the Swedish shore. The crew were sleeping down below The storm was raging and getting worse, Lashed to the wheel was Karl the Swede And kept the brig upon its course. Half blinded by the driving snow, And battered by the sweeping waves, He saw the beam from the Hallo light And steered the brig on to be saved. In Smogen his mother sat in distress, That very morn she had got word, She knew he was out in that raging storm, And prayed to God he would be spared. Karl hailed the skipper and showed the light, Just as the brig she ran aground, "Lower the anchors, send down the boats, For the Bluebird she is going down." His father he stood on the shore, And saw the brig was in distress, He helped the crew as they came ashore, All unaware there was one man less. He fed and watered all the crew, Then asked the skipper, "What was your ship?" "She was the Bluebird sailing out of Hull, To Smogen it is her last trip!" His father threw his glass to ground. "Oh God above, where is my son?" Lashed to the wheel they left him there, Now to his maker he has gone! The old man his sowester took off, His stare was hard, his eyes were dull; "Don't tell his mother the name of the brig, Please don't tell her the Bluebird of Hull." The skipper stood all broken and grey, The crew were still, their heads hung down With trembling voice said to his host, "Lashed to the wheel he was left to drown!" |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: GUEST,silver Date: 06 Feb 17 - 09:20 AM As for Swedish pronunciation, Evert Taube himself reads the lyrics on Youtube: look for "Evert Taube - Balladen om 'Blue Bird' Av Hull". "Båt i lä" - Boat to leeward! Karl's father and brothers didn't wait on the shore, they set out in a small boat to meet the Blue Bird, a remarkable act of courage under the circumstances. "Jump overboard, all hands, you will be saved!" Verse 1: "sviktande stumpar" - I'm not a sailor so I don't know what part of the rigging "stumpar" refers to, but it was covered with ice ("nedisad rigg") and about to break. "Brännvin" - Swedish vodka. A drink for solemn occasions as well as times of despair, and also medicine for any illness in those days. |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: mg Date: 05 Feb 17 - 09:32 PM Would love Ms. Swan's help with pronunciations. I will do a runthrough phonetically and see what I come up with and maybe she can make corrections. I am very taken with this song. It reminds me musically a bit of greensleeves and edmond fitzgerald and somehow of donegal danny but also stands for every shipwreck there ever was.... the one thing about your English version is I wish you would have a way to put the - Båt i lä! - Båt i lä! - Det är far, det är vi! - Det är far min från Smögen! Han log. -Lower the boats! -Lower the boats! -It's father! It's us! -It's father from Smögen! He smiled. - Båt i lä! sjöng --- those are among the most powerful words i have ever heard in a song..reminds me of the words in marselleise.. Formez vos bataillons...now or never... |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: mg Date: 05 Feb 17 - 08:58 PM I think I have a woman with a great voice to sing this so I probably don't need anyone at this point. I had to break a rule I made because she is not Swedish but I think she will do a great job. And if anyone can help me with the costs of copyrights in sweden that would be great. are there hidden costs for a small run of 200-300? if it is around 10 cents per cd like it is in us and canada that is fine but if there are lots of others costs not great.... |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Feb 17 - 05:47 PM First draft. Not got a tune yet. Twas Christmas Eve in seventy-two The waves they reared up mountains high, The little brig Bluebird was out in the storm And the Swedish coast she was nigh. Karl the helmsman was lashed to the wheel And the brig tossed about like a feather, While the crew went below to get out of the storm Karl kept the brig into the weather. Half blinded he stood and held to his course Despite driving snow and the waves. He spotted the light from the Hallo lighthouse And steered the brig on to be saved. Karl's mother in Smogen knew he was out Had just got his letter that morning. She knew that he was out in the storm, But 'twas too late to send him a warning. Karl hailed the skipper and showed him the light But the brig was beginning to founder. "Lower the anchors and send down the boats!" As the waves and the storm crashed around her. Karl's father and brothers they stood on the shore As the brig ran onshore and was shattered; And one boat came in and they helped them ashore, Exhausted and sodden and battered. After they'd warmed up and fed all the crew, Karl's father asked, "What was your ship?" The skipper cried, "She was the Bluebird from Hull And to Smogen she's made her last trip." The old Swede dashed his glass to the floor; "God above, then where is my son?" "He was lashed to the wheel to keep her on course And now to his maker has gone!" The old man his sou'ester slowly took off, His stare was so hard, his eyes dull. "Don't tell his mother the name of the brig, Please name not the Bluebird of Hull." The skipper stood up, he was broken and grey, And his words cut the air like a sword, As he said with a trembling voice to his host, "Karl was tied and forgotten on board!" |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: GUEST,Mg Date: 05 Feb 17 - 01:49 PM I would like to include this on cod cd. If royalties not too exsensive or complicated. If you are a native swedish singer please pm me. |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: Steve Gardham Date: 05 Feb 17 - 11:37 AM Thanks Malcolm I'll certainly ask her if I need any help. However, it's easy enough to press the translate button on Wikipedia and similar sites. There's enough info above actually to make an English version. Of course copyright won't apply as we're completely reformatting the story. |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 05 Feb 17 - 07:18 AM Note to Steve Vikki Swan is fluent in Swedish and could possibly help with interpretations and/or translations. She is also a lot younger than us old codgers so will certainly have more energy. Just a thought. |

"Blue Bird of Hull" is one of the most gripping ballads ever written in the Swedish language. |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: GUEST Date: 03 Feb 17 - 01:31 PM I read it was a composite of several stories that were true. Does anyone here sing it in swedish? |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: Steve Gardham Date: 03 Feb 17 - 11:36 AM Okay so it's not a true story, but it's a great one that needs spreading. I'll work on it. |
Subject: RE: Blue bird of hull From: Steve Gardham Date: 03 Feb 17 - 11:22 AM Me too! Wow! Is this a true story? I feel an English version coming on! I need to do a little more research first on the ship. |

Subject: ADD: Blue bird of hull From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Feb 17 - 04:33 AM Lyrics and another recording here: Lyrics: Det var Blue Bird en brigg
It was Blue Bird of Hull
It was Blue Bird, a brig
That fought on through the storm
Through the gail and the blizzard
With tied down sails
On Christmas Eve (eighteen) seventy two
- Tie the Swede to the rudder, he can steer through the mist
Cried the captain
- Allright, boys, take over!
And Karl Stranne from Smögen
Was tied to the wheel
of Blue Bird that was doomed to sink
Han fick Hållö-fyrs blänk
Fast av snöglopp och stänk
Han stod halvblind
Han fick den i lo
Och i lä där låg Smögen
Hans hem där hans mor
Just fått brevet från Middelsborough
- Nå vad säger du Karl?
- Går hon klar?
- Nej, kapten!
He noticed the lighthouse from Hållö
Despite the blizzard and waves
He stood half-blind
But held the ship steady
And at shore was Smögen
His home where his mother
Had just recieved his letter from Middelsborough
- What say you, Karl?
- Will She make it?
- No, captain!
- Light the flares, She will take us no further.
- We have Hållö of starboard, and the waves are breaking here.
- Lower the anchors and send down the boats.
But She rode not the waves
No, they crashed down on Her
and took the boat they had lowered down.
- I believe, said Karl Stranne, that father has come.
- To meet us, I trust my father!
- Båt i lä!
- Båt i lä!
- Det är far, det är vi!
- Det är far min från Smögen! Han log.
-Lower the boats!
-Lower the boats!
-It's father! It's us!
-It's father from Smögen! He smiled.
- Lower the boats! He cried out.
- They are here, soon we will be saved!
Det var Stranne den äldre
En viking, en örn
Som på julafton sjuttiotvå
Tog sitt renade brännvin
Ur vinskåpets hörn
Till att bjuda dom skeppsbrutna på
- Hur var namnet på skutan?
Han sporde och slog
Nio supar i spetsiga glas
- Briggen Blue bird.
It was Stranne the elder
A viking, an eagle
Who on Christmas Eve '72
Took a bottle
From the corner case
To give the shipwrecked men a drink
- What was the name of the ship?
He asked as he poured nine drinks into pointy glasses
- Blue Bird, a brig
He took the tenth glass
and smashed it against the floor
- Was that Blue Bird, captain? The brig Blue Bird of Hull?
- God above, then where is my son?
-Where's the boy, captain, for God's sake!?
The men went silent as the grave.
Gubben Stranne
Stormen tjöt knappt man hörde hans ord
Old man Stranne
Slowly took off his sou'wester
- Spare his mother, captain, this night.
- Don't name the ship that was wrecked.
- Please, name not Blue Bird of Hull.
The captain stood up
He was gray, he was worn
The storm wailed, one could hardly hear his words
As he said with a trembling voice to his host
- Karl was tied and forgotten on-board. |
