Can anyone out there send me the banjo tunings and chord progression for the old mountain song "Groundhog"?

At one time I knew it but can't recall it now. I have the words. Thanks, Jeep man

From: Fred

Ahh, an old favorite of mine, from Kentucky's own Cousin Emmy. These lyrics come from Pap Brewer, and are played in a simple progression: G-F-G-D; G-F-G-D; G-F-G-D; G. Not too fast; this isn't a breakdown.

1. Shoulder up your gun and call up the dogs;
Shoulder up your gun and call up the dogs;
Going to the woods to catch a ground hog,
Ground hog.

2. One in a hole and one in a log;
One in a hole and one in a log;
Run get Sam, we'll catch a ground hog,
Ground hog.

3. Meat's in the cupboard and butter in the churn;
Meat's in the cupboard and butter's in the churn;
If that ain't ground hog, I'll be durned.

4. Here comes Sal with a snicker and a grin;
Here comes Sal with a snicker and a grin;
Ground hog gravy all over her chin,
Ground hog.

Actually, no one believed Sal when she said it was ground hog gravy.

Jeep Man--

LOTS of banjo tab here, including "Groundhog." Their "Tabledit" format requires downloading the Tabledit program, which I didn't do; but they give you a link to it, and it's apparently free.

Enjoy!

My sister plays a tune called Groundhog that seems to be quite different to the one listed here. Apparently it's an old Jew's Harp tune. The first verse goes something like:

Groundhog, groundhog, What makes your back so brown? I've been livin' in the ground for so darn long, It's a wonder I don't (Sorry, I forget).

It goes on to have verses about a rattlesnake, a Red Bird, a Muskrat and I think a few others. It's really a great old song. I'll try to get the lyrics from her.

Here they are courtesy of my sister Susan. Unfortunately she can't remember who did it, she's played it for years.
I'm betting it's trad.

GROUNDHOG

Groundhog, groundhog
What makes your back so brown?
I've been living in the ground for so darn long,
It's a wonder I don't drown, drown.
It's a wonder I don't drown.

Red bird, red bird
What makes your head so red?
I've been picking your corn for so darn long,
It's a wonder I ain't dead, dead.
It's a wonder I ain't dead.

Rattlesnake, rattlesnake
What makes your teeth so white?
I been lyin' in the sun for so darn long,
You're lucky I don't bite, bite.
You're lucky I don't bite.

Muskrat, muskrat
What makes you smell so bad?
I've been living in the ground for so darn long,
I'm mortified in my head, head.
I'm mortified in my head.

Ohmigawd, you all have made me a happy woman! Imagine this. A thread on maybe the most meaningful song I've encountered in my life. Considering the irony of nearly 30 decades as a vegetarian and yet singing this song on too many stages to recall, with gusto, I am thrilled to have found a resource for yet more verses. If I believed there were a heaven, I'd have to say I'd just gained admittance.

I do hope a few here will be picking this one up...

Aubrey Atwater does a song with this title on her CD "Daily Growing".

I've already seen that version listed here, only in a different verse order.

Hope this helps!

Some more lyrics various and vague from my wife's departed grandpa from East Tenn.

Grab up yer gun and whistle up yer dog,
We're gonna find us a big grounghog
Groundhog. . . .    Groundhog

Here come Sally with a big long pole,
Poke that whistlepig outta his hole
Groundhog. . .   Groundhog

Here come sally with a big long knife,
She skint groundhogs all her life
Grounghog . . . Groundhog

Some I've forgotten but the last verse is...

Groundhog early and groundhog late,
The last piece o' groundhog is on my plate
Groundhog

Lomax has:

Old Joe Digger, Sam and Dave,
Old Joe Digger, Sam and Dave,
They went a-hog-hunting hard as they could stave,
Groun' hog.

Whistle up ye dog and loaden up ye gun,
Away to the hills to have some fun.

Too many rocks and too many logs,
Too many rocks to catch groun' hogs.

They picked up their guns and went to the brash,
By damn! Joe, here's the hog sign fraish.

One take a tree and it's one take a log,
Damn my soul if it ain't a groun' hog.

Git away, Sam, and le' me load my gun,
The groun'-hog hunt has just begun.

He's in here, boys, the hole's wore slick;
Run here, Sam, with your forked stick.

Git down, Sam and in there peep,
For I think I see him sound asleep.

Stand back, boys, and let's be wise,
For I think I see his beaded eyes.

Hold them dogs, boys, don't let 'em howl,
For I thought I heared the groun' hog growl.

Hello, Johnny, cut a long pole
To roust this groun' hog out of his hole.

Up jumped Sam with a ten-foot pole,
He roused it in that groun' hog's hole.

Work, boys, work, jist as hard as ye can tear,
The meat 'll do to eat and the hide 'll do to wear.

Work, boys, work, for all you earn,
Skin 'im after dark and tan 'im in a churn.

Stand back, boys, le' me get my breath,
Catching this groun' hog's mighty nigh death.

A-heared him give a whistle and a wail;
I've wound my stick right in his tail.

Stand back, boys, and give me a little air,
I've got a little of the groun' hog's hair.

Here he comes right in a whirl,
He's the biggest groun' hog in this worl'.

Sam cocked his gun and Dave pulled the trigger,
But the one killed the hog was old Joe Digger.

He took 'im by the tail and wagged him to a log,
And swore, By gosh! he's a hell of a hog!

Up stepped Sam with a snigger and a grin,
"Whatcha going to do with the groun'-hog skin?"

Scrapes him down to his head and feet,
By damn, Sam, here's a fine piece of meat!

Carried him to the house and skinned 'im out to bile --
I bet forty dollars you could smell 'im fifty mile.

They put him in the pot and all began to smile,
They eat that hog before he struck a bile.

Run here, man, hit's bilin' hot,
Sam and Dave's both eating out'n the pot.

Old Uncle Jack says, "I'll be damn!
If I can't get a foreleg I'll take a ham."

The children screamed and the children cried:
They love groun' hog cooked and fried.

Hello, Mama, make Sam quit,
He's eating all the hog, I can't get a bit.

Hello, boys, ain't it a sin?
Watch that gravy roll down Sam's chin.

Hello, Mama, look at Sam --
He's eat all the hog, and a-sopping out the pan.

Watch him, boys, he's about to fall,
He's eat till his pants won't button at all.

Hello, boys, what ye think of that?
Sam's eat hog till he's right slick fat.

He eat that grease till it ran to his nabel,
He'll eat no more hog till he's able.

(That should do to go on.)

Two distinct songs here, of course.

The "Groundhog" quoted by Steve Latimer and later identified as Buffy St. Marie's is more commonly known as "Woodpecker" or "Rattlesnake." Could just as easily be called Groundhog, as there is one in the song, but usually isn't. (It's pretty rare in tradition, but not unheard-of. Buffy probably heard it via the pop version recorded by the Everly Brothers on the album called, I think, Songs My Daddy Taught Me).

The title "Groundhog" is almost universally given to the song quoted by Fred and RankFrank and given in the Lomax text just above. It is fairly common in tradition. Mention "Groundhog," and this is the one that comes to nearly everyone's mind.

Ah, folk confusion!

GROUNDHOG

Ernie Alston
Shafter, 1940

Take my gun and whistle for my dog
Take my gun and whistle for my dog
Thought I'd get me a groundhog -groundhog.

The old dog treed and treed in a log
The old dog treed and treed in a log
One for me and two for my dog -groundhog.

I cut him up and I got him on soon
I cut him up and I got him on soon
He got done before quite noon -groundhog.

Here come the chillun with a laugh and a grin
Here come the chillun with a laugh and a grin
Groundhog gravy all over their chin -groundhog.

Old Uncle Sam kept hangin' roun'
Old Uncle Sam kept hangin' roun'
Thought he'd get my groundhog ham -groundhog.

Old Aunty Jane came skippin' on a chain
Old Aunty Jane came skippin' on a chain
Thought she's get my groundhog brain -groundhog.

Old Aunty Sal came skip and a hop
Old Aunty Sal came skip and a hop
Flounced her head right in that pot -groundhog.

Want my grave dug deep and wide
Want my grave dug deep and wide
Want it lined with groundhog hide -groundhog.

Want my tombstone on it wrote
Want my tombstone on it wrote
Groundhogs runnin' down my throat -groundhog.

Voices From the Dust Bowl

I have it on good authority that groundhog tastes NOTHING like haggis.

I *almost* once got to eat groundhog. Somebody in my commune shot one, cooked it, and served it out -- but I was away on a business trip. The Web reveals no restaurant where I have have that great American experience. Likewise, possum & sweet potatoes.

i also have been a vegetarian for many decades,
but always introduce this song with mention
of "menu" or its "what's fir dinner"...
:
my musical partner Buckwheat Bob, sings
"Look out boys, I'm about to go wild

and eat that ground hog before it's been biled..

and another verse some thing like

look out boys. they're about to fall.
i'm gonna eat til my britches won't button at all..

we often do this in conjunction with Home Grown Tomatoes
and other food related songs...

actually, dinner tonite consists of brown rice, brussel sprouts
(from the stalk) and hollandaise sauce. like the "lOgger lover"
who would eat a bale of hay if you poured whiskey on it, i will
eat about anything with hollandaise sauce on it!

The version that I breezily attributed to Lomax (& that has made it into the DigiTrad) is from his _American Ballads & Folksongs_. His _Folk Songs of North America_ has quite a different one:

One old woman was the mother of us all,
She fed us on whistle-pig as soon as we could crawl.
    Tan-a-rig-tail, paddle link-a di-de-do.

Come on, boys, and let's go down,
Let's catch a whistle-pig in the groun'.

Up come Jonah from the plough,
Catch the whistle-pig, catch him now.

Blow your horn and call your dogs,
We'll go to the backwoods and catch a groundhog.

Treed him in a rock, treed him in a log,
Dagone, boys, what a big groundhog!

Skin that whistle-pig, save that hide,
Makes the best shoestrings I ever tied.

Take that groundhog, put him on to bile,
Bet, by jinks, you could smell him a mile.

Up come grace with a snigger and a grin,
Groundhog gravy all over her chin.

Up come Cloe, happy as a crane,
Swan she'd eat them red-hot brains.

They eat that whistle-pig, all they could hold,
Till there was nothing left in the bowl.

I set a steel trap up on the hill,
Now we'll have whistle-pig at our will.

An early version of this song was in Em so I wrote several refrains that alternate with the main lyrics. After singing the verse in key of G, go to Em and D.. Here is one:
Please Mr. Farmer don't shoot me,
I'm just a poor whistle pig can't you see?
I'm sleeping all winter I don't mean you no harm
I'm trying to stay out of your big pot of stew.

Sorry Spectroid, It was not a Jew's Harp Buffy played but a Mouthbow. It is a similar sound though. I remember playing the same song at the Marsden Inn in the seventies when the string broke. Nearly cut my ear off as I remember. Happy days.
