the biggest problem with CD notes is that they are reduced in size to the point of being unreadable without a large magnifier... but what I did manage to briefly review seems to be unfairly attacked by the musical tradition reviewer.

Harte may advance ideas, but he spend more time explaining where he got the songs and the versions he sings and if he learned from other singers or written texts...

it would seem that Ireland and the Irish bring out polarized viewpoints that affect the ability of some to appreciate a work that really makes no claims to be a scholarly discourse.

bit of a trip across the pond for me... though I'd love to make it sometime... my one and only was in 2002 and I bullied my brother into taking a break from castles and spending a day at the Lancaster Sea Music Festival... hey, it was my birthday and I felt entitled LOL

no.. first time I've seen that... I do have the West Point book Wars of Napoleon, but not the accompanying book of maps.

"funny" how the peace between France and Britain ended right around the time that Napoleon sold Louisiana out from under the Spanish noses and had money to line his war chest... having him for an ally is much like having to pay for protection from the mob. either way you're not going to win

I've only just come across this thread, sorry, I was busy doing other things for the last week or so. You can get a copy of any of Frank's albums in An Góilín any Friday night or at the annual Frank Harte Festival held on the 4th weekend in September every year in the fair city of Dublin. Check out www.goilin.com

Glad you got your copy, science geek. You have probably come across the graphic representation of Napoleon's invasion of Russia by Charles Joseph Minard -

I've just read the Geoff Wallis review on the Mustrad site and am perplexed by one of his criticisms; that the fada "is notably absent throughout the booklet". It's there in the relevant words in my copy. Was the booklet perhaps revised and reprinted at some point?

many thanks for the help... claddaghrecords was the winner for me... the double CD set for 18 euros and they take paypal.

I'm doing a workshop this April at NEFFA on songs of the Napoleonic era and this will help give a broader overview.

As a yank, my feeling about Bonaparte are quite mixed... we can thank him for the Louisiana Purchase AND the War of 1812.. mixed blessing there.

Things like social reforms, the discovery of the Rosetta Stone and advances in science must be seen against the vast waste of lives and resources in his vain quest to surpass Alexander the Great...   there were other generals vying for control of France, we have to wonder what would have been had he not prevailed over them.

Always worth persisting with searches on eBay, Amazon, etc. I did eventually find the Bonaparte CD at reasonable cost last year. The "Digging" CD took longer until I thought of the Claddagh Records site. Another site I check on is MusicStack. They list from sellers world-wide, often record shops/dealers who do not use eBay or Amazon. Only shows the Vinyl Tap offering for the Bonaparte CD at the moment.

Good luck!

£54 at VinylTap! Surely they can't be THAT rare? Claddagh Records in Dublin have it at 18 Euros + P+P. I recently bought one of Frank Harte's other records (There's Gangs of Them Digging) from them, after despairing of ever finding it at a reasonable price on eBay or Amazon. Prompt service. Had a chance to visit their shop last summer, wonderful stock of traditional music, not just their own label, all available on the website.

thanks for the link...

I'm interested in various perspectives of folk song and history... and Napoleon is a prime example of perspectives from all over the place... think of Beethoven's Third Symphony and its dedication... and removal after Boney decided to become emperor.

I'll still see if a CD shows up

I'd like a copy at affordable price... retired now and the $156 price tag on Amazon is out of reach for me

There is a not very favourite review of this album on the Musical Traditions website that cites quite a bit of the booklet. Maybe that helps.

When you say "tracking down", do you mean finding more information about it or getting hold of a copy?

I've tracked down the Topic LP Valiant Sailor to replace my old one, but I'm stymied so far in tracking down the Frank Harte/Donal Lunny album, My Name is Napoleon Bonaparte.

Any help in tracking down the CD with its booklet would be much appreciated. Amazon has the mp3 album... but I only use them as a last resort. thanks
