Subject: Recording 101 SJW songs - suggestions?
From: JenBurdoo
Date: 24 Feb 17 - 10:53 AM

Hey all. Given the current political climate, I am recording on Youtube 101 labor, socialist, environmentalist, feminist, antiwar, protest, etc songs. Social Justice Warrior for short - basically anything America's current political leadership would disapprove. So far I've done the following:

The World Turned Upside Down (Leon Rosselson)
The Internationale
Deportees
Your Daughters and Your Sons
The Red Flag
Hold the Fort (Labor version)
A Man's a Man
Hallelujah, I'm a Bum
Viva la Quince Brigada (Christy Moore)
Parcel of Rogues
Love is a Fearsome Thing (Judy Small)
Jesus Christ (Woody Guthrie)
Blowin' in the Wind
Ballad of Erica Levine

Others I'm planning:

The Times They Are A Changing
With God on our Side
Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream
Mrs. McGrath
Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye
There Were Roses
December 14, 1989 (Judy Small)
Fire in the Glen
Smile in Your Sleep, Bonny Baby
This Land is Your Land
The Revolution's Here (Judy Small)
Solidarity Forever
Gonna be an Engineer

I need more! Ideas?

Thanks,
Jennifer

Hi, Jen - Lately I've been singing Anne Feeney's The Rich Man's House. I love the song.

There are lots of Anne Feeney songs that might appeal to you.

Not to toot my own horn too loudly, but we put lots of Social Justice Warrior songs in the Rise Again Songbook (click). Many are in the "Struggle" chapter, but we have them peppered throughout the book. The link will lead you to YouTube videos for most of the songs in the book.

I've got Rise Up Singing and am getting a lot from it - mostly the Women, Work and Struggle chapters. Would like to get hold of volume 2!

Planning to use a lot of Woody Guthrie and Judy Small songs, but would like older/traditional stuff too.

The song "No Chains" was written by my band, The Troubles, for Marian Price, when she was an Irish Republican political prisoner in Northern Ireland, and the other, "Bring Him Home", was written for Michael Campbell, another Irish Republican political prisoner, when he was being held in Lithuania. Both of them were freed through the efforts of activists from Ireland, the US, and around the world.

We do a lot of social injustice stuff - our own and the traditionals - in regard to our Irish causes as well as pro-Union related to our coal region and Molly Maguire music.

My alter ego hippie band, Chasing Rabbits, is fledgling so we haven't got any studio recordings of our originals yet, but here's a video of "Stand Up for Standing Rock", our newest cause.

Gotta help out where you can. Woody, Pete, & Arlo forever.

A good social justice song that I like to play is "A Man's A Man For A' That."
