For those not familiar it is a hammer.

I have only come across one alternative phrase and that was "Bristol Lock-Pick"

what have Mudcatters come across in the way of another euphemism for the humble hammer?

TIA

A dingo's breakfast; "a scratch - a piss - and a look around". In other words, nothing at all.

More straightforward, A donkey's breakfast; a straw mattress, palliasse or pallet

My father always used to look for the opportunity to ask people to hand him his "hammerfor".

"What's a hammerfor?"

"Knockin in nails".

I heard the reference to a "Glasgow screwdriver" over 40 years ago, in Perthshire, so it's been arounf for a while, and not just in Edinburgh.
Latest one I heard was when a big bowl of crisps was handed round the musicians in a session, and an accordion player from Glasgow said, "Ah a Glasgow salad" :)

All pertinent - as we used to say in the Royal Navy, if you can't fix it with a hammer, it's fucked!

Somewhere I heard an Oz song about a swaggie with the lines:

"A flamin' good breakfast before headin' off;
Billy tea, a roley and a bloody good cough...."

Actually, it might have been a Kiwi song,"flaming" being a somewhat more common adjective in NZ than in Oz.

Dunno why it stuck in my memory; probably because I used to have that breakfast menu myself...before I discovered coffee.

If you can't fix it with a hammer it's an electrical fault

If it moves but it shouldn't - Gaffa tape
If it should move but it doesn't - WD40

what more do you need

First came across the term working in a factory making track rod ends in N Wales.

I don't know of any similar term for the tool but something like "a bit of gentle persuasion" could suggest the need for a knock with something, perhaps more commonly there a good old copper mallet.

Tried and tested precision engineering technique - Hit it with a hammer.

And if that doesn't work - GET A BIGGER HAMMER.
