Just heard that Danny has gone.

Wonderful singer, great folklorist, superb to listen to, and wonderful to work with.

My heart goes out to Gail.

I met Danny at one of the shanty sessions at The Press Room in Portsmouth, NH a few years back. I didn't know who he was, and asked Jeri who the older guy sitting across from us was. I'd heard of him, of course, so was a little awestruck at first. We chatted for a bit, and I asked him if he'd sing "Hey Rain" and he obliged.

email I received - Danny "died quietly just before midnight" last night. Despite treatment for brain cancer, for some time, he gave 3 performances at Cobargo Folk festival last weekend. His partner, Gael Shannon, did a great job in getting him there - and, with Margaret Walters, keeping him on track with some of the songs.

I've been looking thru the pics of Danny I have. We'll be posting some pics om the Loaded Dog Folk Club facebook page as Danny appeared @ The Dog yearly from at least 2010.

He was a great singer & a good bloke.

Was fortunate enough to sing with him (and just sit and talk) several times at the Portsmouth (NH) Maritime Filk Festival, Tom Hall's (Curmudgeon's) Press Room sessions and on board one of the ship's brought to Portsmouth by the Piscatqua Maritime Commission.

No one can take the memories away -- he was a delightful person to be around and sing with.

We learned this news today, and are deeply saddened. Even though we knew it was coming, his death came far, far too soon for those of us who loved Danny. We will remember him always as an unselfish sharer of kowledge and song, a dear friend, and a joyful man who lived life to the fullest. Condolences to Gael and all his friends in Oz and around the world. K & G

He will be sorely missed. His CDs were superbly performed and contain much interesting and unusual material - "Launch out on the Deep" in particular is still one of my most favourite recordings. I had only one conversation with him, many years ago at Chippenham FF. I can't remember what we said, but we talked as if we were old friends.

Sincere condolences to his many friends and family.

At my house, August 2005

And my 'claim to fame' is that at another gathering... the time he brought Gael with him, I dared to sing "Banks of the Reedy Lagoon".... and afterwards, Gael said it was her favorite song, but that Danny hated to sing it, so I had saved him from having her beg...

He will be missed.... but OH how well remembered....

Condolences to Gael and family.

I first met Danny in the early 70s when he was an Expert in Residence at The Geelong College and I was a fledgling Head of English. Danny so impressed all of us, staff, students and even the administration that he was appointed to the staff working in conjunction with Deakin University in Geelong. Later, when I moved to Morongo Girls' College Gael became a colleague. I shall miss Danny. He was a great friend, valuable colleague and highly talented musician. I will never forget the Danny Spooner Supergroup concerts at the old Bush Inn in Geelong.

Goodbye old friend and love to Gael who was your rock.

Dear, dear, another fine singer and man gone - I've only just added a tribute on here for Ian Woods, who was in some ways a similar singer and character to Danny. I always enjoyed Danny's singing and company, most recently in Canberra last year - and his concertina playing was far better than he ever owned up to. One of those people whose experience makes them quite irreplaceable. So sad to hear this.

First met Danny at Ian Ball's little cottage in Brlgrave in 1975 or 76. I was about 16. Impressionable and deeply impressed.
I then had the privilege of being taught about early poetry, bardic traditions and the ballad by him at Melb Uni in 1977. Oxford Book of Ballads was instantly my prized possession. These experiences shaped the way I developed as a teacher of poetry. Whilst working on a dramatisation of Rime of The Ancient Mariner I used Sanny's sea shanties to teach my students the songs and to capture the hardship, camaraderie and longing of those who sailed the seas. Danny was a man of prodigious talent. The world is poorer without him but we are a richer for having met him.

Definitely a National Treasure -
2016 National Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award winner

Danny Spooner's passion is the expression of British and Australian culture through folk music. Born into a working-class family in the East End of London Danny arrived in Australia in 1962. Influenced by the likes of Declan Affley, Martyn Wyndham-Read and Margret RoadKnight, Danny developed his craft and soon understood the importance of the social context of folk song. He has performed in folk clubs all over Australia, New Zealand and in Britain on his visits home. He has appeared at every major folk festival in Australia, at which he has given a vast range of workshops on aspects of folk songs of Britain and Australia, many that were recorded by ABC national radio. His passion is getting people singing and he has inspired and encouraged many to develop their singing craft. Nothing gives him more pleasure at a festival than getting a good singing session going. Described as "a living national treasure", Danny Spooner can make traditional music seem new, and make new songs seem old.

The proposer forgot to add his appearances in USA.

Danny was a regular visitor to our festivals in Tas for years. I ran several themed sessions and Danny was always a first choice, always helpful, always willing and great to be with His passion was to share songs and to share his knowledge of where they came from and how they were created and to get everyone to sing. He was here in January and as always closed the festival with 'Rolling Home" with us all singing with him as he did every year.

Sandra-

Looking forward to the new CD, and thanks to all Danny's friends who helped make this last CD possible.

I'd like to think that Danny's now hanging out with his old mentor Bob Roberts, upon the celestial seas on their old sailing barge. If you listen closely you can hear his concertina and a raspy voice raising a well-remembered song:

Traditional as sung by Bob Roberts, 1970s
Saydisc, CD SDL-405 Sea Songs & Shanties
Adapted by Charlie Ipcar, 2000

Waiting for the Day

G------------------------------C
Now the worst old brig that ever did weigh,
G-----------------------------D
Sailed out of Harwich on a windy day;

Chorus:

D----------G
And we're waiting for the day,
C
Waiting for the day,
--------G
We're waiting for the day
----------D7------G
When we get our pay!

She was built in Roman times.
Held together with bits of twine...

The skipper's half drunk and the mate is too,
And the crew is fourteen kegs too few...

As we shoved off from the Surrey Dock
The skipper caught his knackers in the main sheet block...

By Orford Ness she sprang a leak,
Hear her poor old timbers creak...

We pumped our way 'round Lowestoft Ness,
The wind backed round to the west-sou'-west...

Through the Cockles to Cromer Cliff,
She's steering like a wagon with a wheel adrift...

Into the Humber and up to town,
"Pump, you bastards, pump or drown!"...

Her coal was shot by a Keadby crew,
But her bottom was rotten and it all fell through...

So after all our fears and alarms,
We're safe ashore in "The Druid's Arms."

So, we're waiting for the day,
Waiting for the day,
We're waiting for the day
When we get our pay! (2X)

Fair winds, Danny, and thanks so much for your kindness and warm hospitality to Judy and myself when we were adrift in the hills of Victoria.

Charlie Ipcar
