Subject: RE: Your 4 top fantasy instruments From: open mike Date: 29 Jul 02 - 01:59 AM a friend once had an instrument called a water phone-- i believe it was invented by someone named water or waters...it consisted of a ball or globe 1-1/2 feet in diameter with copper pipes welded--no i guess they would have to be brazed(?) on to it around the perimeter ("equator")--hard to describe, but the tubes were of differing lengths, and the whole thing was hollow and filled with water--then you would play the tubes with a bow--seemed like a bass fiddle bow--it was short and stocky--and you would hold the thing and swish the water around inside and it would emit the most out-of- this world swirling sounds...now that is fantasy!! also a little thing that i remember playing with during the same era--25 years ago--a little piece of brass wire (which rang like a bell) which was suspended on a piece of monofilament (fishing line) which you would wrap around your pinkie (litle fingers) while you put your fingers in your ear--once again hard to put into words, and it sounds a bit goofy--anyway you would strike the metal wire and the reverberatiing sound would travel thru the fish line, thru your fingers and bounce around off your skull like you were in a very mysterious tunnel. both quite fantastic experiences...so fantasy instruments. both sounded kind of like synthesized sound but just simple organic sound makers....invented by whacked out hippies I presume--california in the 60's, you know... |

A guitar that you could buy from a music shop already properly set up, and with a decent set of strings attached. (Especially where parents are getting a kid their first instrument).

I'm not lusting after the instrument, but I'd love to know how many pairs of hands it passed through on its way to him, the other musicians that worked with the players, (if it could only talk etc...) I wish there was some kind of 'Black Box' recorder built into these things. Having said that, I've got a twenty odd year old Jap 'Strat that could tell some stories, but I'd probably want to edit out SOME of the gigs before I passed it on to anyone else. My ideal instrument would be Richard Thompson's 'Strat, providing that he left all the tunes in it.

To check, I return to the forum list, check on Refresh, and find it on the newly refreshed thread. Are you also on AOL? Perhaps AOL 3.0? If so, I think it's something AOL does intentionally to get you to upgrade to 4.0; that and make it impossible to download any good stuff like Real Audio, etc. Despite the fact that I get twice as many crashes on 4.0 and that it is much slower than 3.0, I finally upgraded (again) so I could again open large graphics files and download peripheral drivers. --seed |

I was saved by a back up that was made by the computer team (who did not work on my site).

That might explain the error message you saw and Mudcat for example, as far as I am aware, basicialy creates the web page you see on demand - a sort of query. If it isn't refreshed and you use the back button, you will see things as they were before. Jon |

It is one of the best sounding "new" guitars I have heard, and the Fishman system sounds real acoustic to my ears. Second, one of them old National's, I don't know enough to be particular. Third, one them there Gibson F-model mandolins. Who would think a guy with fat fingers would want to play the mandolin? There is no intention to demean anybody on this forum. Sometimes I spot things, and obviously in your case I screwed up badly. I actually posted an apology last night on the "West of Ireland" thread to you and someone else who took my sometimes wierd statements as literal, and not like it was intended. I have many faults, and those who know me know that I am very good at pointing out my shortcomings, and looking at them probably more cynically than any body else does. I actually did say sorry earlier in this post also, concerning my "lasy" statement, and nobody cared to pull me up on that. Nobody's perfect, and I am more imperfect than a lot. Please accept my heartfelt apologies, and know, for God's sake, that I don't count myself better than anybody else, quite the contrary. And I don't go around insulting people. It's my North of Ireland humour, and it doesn't suit everybody. This is why communication is important, and why we need to straighten shit like this out. My remark was ill-timed, out of place, and unnecessary. DC, The large Greven I played the same day or Mark Twain's 1835 Martin, I believe it's model # was 2 1/2- 17. A guitar that is more suited to flatpicking than my Fylde - A Martin would be a likely choice. After that I'll be looking for an octive mandolin. The last thing on my list would be a slot head 12 fret guitar - Martin Collings or Santa Cruz. I'm not picky. It just has to be perfect. I'm lucky enough to have the guitars and a mandolin that I've always lusted after so I'm a pretty happy camper. So for the last of my four instruments give a great guitar to someone who would really love and take care of it. I may not have everything I want - but I have everything I need. PS - Santa - If you want to stop and pick a little bit that would be great. As long as we don't wake the Mrs. |
