a friend once had an instrument called a water phone-- i believe it was invented by someone named water or waters...it consisted of a ball or globe 1-1/2 feet in diameter with copper pipes welded--no i guess they would have to be brazed(?) on to it around the perimeter ("equator")--hard to describe, but the tubes were of differing lengths, and the whole thing was hollow and filled with water--then you would play the tubes with a bow--seemed like a bass fiddle bow--it was short and stocky--and you would hold the thing and swish the water around inside and it would emit the most out-of- this world swirling sounds...now that is fantasy!! also a little thing that i remember playing with during the same era--25 years ago--a little piece of brass wire (which rang like a bell) which was suspended on a piece of monofilament (fishing line) which you would wrap around your pinkie (litle fingers) while you put your fingers in your ear--once again hard to put into words, and it sounds a bit goofy--anyway you would strike the metal wire and the reverberatiing sound would travel thru the fish line, thru your fingers and bounce around off your skull like you were in a very mysterious tunnel. both quite fantastic experiences...so fantasy instruments. both sounded kind of like synthesized sound but just simple organic sound makers....invented by whacked out hippies I presume--california in the 60's, you know...

I now have a Taylor 810, an Apollo 12 and a Vega banjo that is about 100 years old. Who could ask for more?

1. A Loar-era gibson F5...prefer '23, but I'm not picky.

2. Almost any prewar Martin...but a '39 HD-28 would be nice.

no need for the other two, those will do nicely

John,

You'll be most welcome to sit in at any session anywhere if you turn up with one of these things.

They're dead easy to play and you'll make loads of new friends.

A couple of hours practice and you're on your way.

Good luck.

P.S. I wish they'd ban the sale of these things on the Ferries.

P.P.S. I'm trying to be as ironic as you are, please don't take offence. (Someone should tell these people.)

Just thought of another. This IS the ultimate fantasy instrument.

A guitar that you could buy from a music shop already properly set up, and with a decent set of strings attached.

(Especially where parents are getting a kid their first instrument).

A pal of mine let me have a go on his Gold '52 Les Paul a while back. It was a complete sweetheart.

I'm not lusting after the instrument, but I'd love to know how many pairs of hands it passed through on its way to him, the other musicians that worked with the players, (if it could only talk etc...)

I wish there was some kind of 'Black Box' recorder built into these things.

Having said that, I've got a twenty odd year old Jap 'Strat that could tell some stories, but I'd probably want to edit out SOME of the gigs before I passed it on to anyone else.

My ideal instrument would be Richard Thompson's 'Strat, providing that he left all the tunes in it.

Well my top four fantasy instruments would be:

1) an Olle Plahn Nyckelharpa - But I think I have just bought one of those, still can't belive I own a Nyckelharpa!!!!

2) A Grand Piano

3) A Silverbass harpa, Like a Nyckelhapa just bigger and lower

4) Another Pigini accordion exactly the same as the one I have got already, mine needs a service and I need another accordion to play!!!!

Cheers, Sam

Marymac, that happens to me so much that I've just gone to taking that error message to mean that my post HAS made it to the thread. To check, I return to the forum list, check on Refresh, and find it on the newly refreshed thread. Are you also on AOL? Perhaps AOL 3.0? If so, I think it's something AOL does intentionally to get you to upgrade to 4.0; that and make it impossible to download any good stuff like Real Audio, etc. Despite the fact that I get twice as many crashes on 4.0 and that it is much slower than 3.0, I finally upgraded (again) so I could again open large graphics files and download peripheral drivers.

Mary, re mistakes: caused in part by the wrong info reaching me - I thought they were redundant but I once deleted all the info regarding what went to make (ie a list of parts) at least 5 of what were then current and popular UK washing machines. I was saved by a back up that was made by the computer team (who did not work on my site).

Yep Jeri, so have I but only on rare occasions - very much a one off rather than what seems to be happening to Mary.

And Mary, I joked before but please don't think I'm criticising you - even if it is your fault (which it probably isn't), I have made more mistakes than most computer wise...

Mary, I could be wrong but at a guess, are you using the back and forward buttons on your browser and possibly reading old pages as a result?

That might explain the error message you saw and Mudcat for example, as far as I am aware, basicialy creates the web page you see on demand - a sort of query. If it isn't refreshed and you use the back button, you will see things as they were before.

Dear Folks,

I can't believe it-it happened again! After I post, I get a message saying that it couldn't connect with the server, or some such thing, which makes me believe my connection has gone sour, or something. This time, instead of hitting the "Submit message" button repeatedly, I went to the site, and to the thread, all over again, and got the message a 2nd time, so I went through all that a 3rd time! AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! Each time, when I went back to the top, it showed the same 51 posts that had been there before, then, suddenly, it's 56, and 3 are mine!!! I'm so sorry. It feels like either my computer skills, or my equipment, are hopelessly inadequate. If anybody can suggest anything, please feel free.

Love,

Mary

Dear Brendy,

I'll forgive you, and ask you please to forgive me (this is SO John Prine!) for unintentionally repeating myself. I may be able to spell, but I am not very adept with computers, and my antique Mac, brand X modem, and AOL 3.0 seem to be a voilatile combination. This is the 3rd time I've typed this to avoid what happened the other evening!

I can tease folks, too, but I generally wait till I get to know them a bit. I think Guy may be as much a newcomer in these parts as I am, maybe more so. If you're new, it's kinda scary to put yourself up on the board with the old timers, and I know some of these folks from that other plane of existence-REAL LIFE! So, Brendy, and all you other Mudcateers (I didn't originate it, but I like it-we need something like the ears-maybe a rubber catfish barb that would stick on your chin!), please be a little gentle with us newbies, at least till we get our feet (fins) wet.

Peace and love,

Mary

Wel-l-l-l-l,

First, a Taylor 814 ce. I want this for my "road" guitar. It is one of the best sounding "new" guitars I have heard, and the Fishman system sounds real acoustic to my ears.

Second, one of them old National's, I don't know enough to be particular.

Third, one them there Gibson F-model mandolins. Who would think a guy with fat fingers would want to play the mandolin?

Then, Santa, maybe one of those Appalacian bass boxes I read about on the Mudcat. Sounds like great fun.

Guy,
I really didn't mean to insult you; Sometimes my "gutter" sense of humour gets me some evenings. There is no intention to demean anybody on this forum. Sometimes I spot things, and obviously in your case I screwed up badly. I actually posted an apology last night on the "West of Ireland" thread to you and someone else who took my sometimes wierd statements as literal, and not like it was intended.
I have many faults, and those who know me know that I am very good at pointing out my shortcomings, and looking at them probably more cynically than any body else does.
I actually did say sorry earlier in this post also, concerning my "lasy" statement, and nobody cared to pull me up on that.
Nobody's perfect, and I am more imperfect than a lot.
Please accept my heartfelt apologies, and know, for God's sake, that I don't count myself better than anybody else, quite the contrary. And I don't go around insulting people.
It's my North of Ireland humour, and it doesn't suit everybody.
This is why communication is important, and why we need to straighten shit like this out.
My remark was ill-timed, out of place, and unnecessary.
Others who took offence, and there were a few of them, 'repeatedly', please forgive an old fart like me who joined this forum, not to insult but to discuss and exchange.

Breandán

I hafta say, you folks who are looking for self-tuning 6 and 12 strings are living the easy life and don't know it!! Try tuning a full-sized Celtic harp, and a hammered dulcimer with several strings on each course. Man, what I wouldn't **give** for self-tuning instruments!

Anyway, my fantasy instruments include a Bb bass clarinet with a low C extension (something to vibrate the neighbours outta their chairs), and an even bigger harp... custom carved, maybe... uh-oh! Harplust -- gotta go!

I could tolerate owning a Stefan Sobell Bouzouki, a 1930 Martin OM 28 I played long ago at The Guitar Shop in Wash. DC, The large Greven I played the same day or Mark Twain's 1835 Martin, I believe it's model # was 2 1/2- 17. There was a feature story on the latter on NPR's All Things Considered and it sounded magnificent. You can find the audio at npr.org in their archives. Sorry I don't remember the specific address.

Dear Santa,

I would just love ANY instrument I could play well, and accompany myself on. Maybe you'll have to give me a new left hand, though-mine never could get up to speed. Oh, and the instrument would have to be self-tuning, too. And along with that, I'd like a voice like Cath Oss or Helen Schneyer. If that's not possible, then just help me keep mine right on the money more often. And lastly, please drop off some nice, leftish, folky man to keep my feet warm and rub my back, and I'll be very good all year, I promise.

BTW, thanks, Michael, for your comments about criticizing spelling. I may be able to spell, but I don't rate others' contributions by their abilities to spell. I've just found my mother and my sister after 48 years of not knowing where to look for them. Guess what-they can't spell. Do you think that matters? Sorry, I don't mean to sound all huffy and holier-than-thou.

Best wishes for a warm and cozy holiday season to all, Mary McCaffrey

Liam - If you need someone to babysit your Santa Cruz while you're in San Antonio let me know - no charge. What are friends for ?? Or if you know someway you can get your Santa to inspire my Santa I would appreciate it.

Wesley - you'd be pleased with that 'slot head, 12 fret' Santa Cruz. Santa was kind enough to bring me one last year (a 000 model) and I love it. It rarely leaves my house!

A good qualiy bozouki/mandola - could be made by one of several good luthiers.

A guitar that is more suited to flatpicking than my Fylde - A Martin would be a likely choice.

A Castignari (?sp) B/C or C#D melodeon

Any one of several tenor banjos - I'll go for a Vega Professional.

Well , Santa -

For me - I would love to have a mandola. I tried a couple of Webers and loved them. After that I'll be looking for an octive mandolin. The last thing on my list would be a slot head 12 fret guitar - Martin Collings or Santa Cruz. I'm not picky. It just has to be perfect.

I'm lucky enough to have the guitars and a mandolin that I've always lusted after so I'm a pretty happy camper. So for the last of my four instruments give a great guitar to someone who would really love and take care of it. I may not have everything I want - but I have everything I need.

PS - Santa - If you want to stop and pick a little bit that would be great. As long as we don't wake the Mrs.
