Fine, bouncy Québécois trad song, want to sing it, can't pick out ~les paroles~ from the recording. Any takers?

I found these lyrics at Google Play Music. Is it the right song?

TIENS TIENS TIENS
(Andre Hornez, Paul Misrachi)

Ah ! Quelle douceur
La vie vous semble rose
Y a pas d'erreur
Il se passe quelque chose
Tiens! tiens! tiens!
On joue d'la mandoline
Tiens! tiens! tiens!

Tiens! tiens! tiens!
La gaieté me transporte
Tiens! tiens! tiens!
Je me sens aérien
Mais v'là soudain que l'on frappe à ma porte
C'est pour la facture des grands magasins
Tiens! tiens! tiens!
C'est le printemps qui vient

If it's the right one, it's not Québécois, it's French.

PS: It's from 1939, not really traditional and since Hornez died in 1989 and Misrachi died in 1998, it'll be © till 2068.

There's a bouncing one here, it's a traditional song from Picardy (Northern France). The lyrics below the video are in Picard French dialect and are followed by a standard French translation. I've added an English literal translation below.

Tiens, tiens, tiens

Tiens, tiens, tiens, vlå tchiot Jin qui rvient
Ravizez com.me il å boin.ne mine
Tiens, tiens, tiens, vlå tchiot Jin qui rvient
Ravizez com.me i rit de loin
Ravizez com.me il å boin.ne mine
Ravizez com.me i rit de loin
Ravizez com.me il å boin.ne mine
Ravizez com.me i rit de loin

Viens dins min tchiot clotchier
Y å dla vinette, Y å de la vinette
Viens dins min tchiot clotchier
Y å dla vinette pi du gerdré

Tiens, tiens, tiens / traduction

Tiens, tiens, tiens, voilà petit Jean qui revient
Regardez comme il a bonne mine
Tiens, tiens, tiens, voilà petit Jean qui revient
Regardez comme il rit de loin

Regardez comme il a bonne mine
Regardez comme il rit de loin
Regardez comme il a bonne mine
Regardez comme il rit de loin

Viens dans mon petit clocher
Il y a du vin, il y a du vin (peut-être du mauvais vin !)
Viens dans mon petit clocher
Il y a du vin et du mauvais cidre.

English translation

Look, look, look, here's little/young John coming back
Look how good he looks,
Look, look, look, here's little/young John coming back
Look how he laughs from afar.

Look how good he looks,
Look how he laughs from afar,
Look how good he looks,
Look how he laughs from afar.

Come to my little steeple*
There's wine, there's wine (maybe bad wine!)
Come to my little steeple,
There's wine and bad cider**.

*steeple here means parish, village, hometown.
**"cidre" in French is always sparkling cider.

Thanks to all for your trouble, but these don't seem to be the one. I had found Joe Offer's on the net, that's definitely not it. The Picard one doesn't look as tho it could fit the meter. The recording is a CD loaned me by a fellow jammer: Canadian Fiddle & Cowboy No.3, 1928-1945; M. C. Productions Vintage Recordings, Copyright 2013, remastering by Mickey Clark, Mfr. by CreateSpace, Charleston, SC, 8-87936-47152-0. It's a collection of 27 folk & cowboy tunes and songs, as originally performed, titles listed, and some commentary on the people who performed the things, but not linking the specific tracks to those performers.

It's in D (according to my harmonica), & goes, so to speak,

Te-tum-ti-tum-ti-TA.
Te-tum-ti-tum-ti-ta-Nicholas.
Ti-tum-ti-tum-ti-TA,
Ti-tum-ti-tum-ti-ta-Nicholas,
Tiens, tiens tiens, mais c'est ça si bon, (??)
Bon, bon, bon, retirez garcon   (??)

(Last 2 lines repeated by the responding crew)

Contains bits about "trop belle", and "elle
portera" and "verra" something in "l'eglise",
but the rest of the verses (4) are a complete
mystery to me. Chorus is just my best guess.
Whether this concerns Nicholas the notorious
cuckolding servant, I have no idea.

Monique - Boulfroy's Picard one is also pretty surely unrelated. When I saw your lyrics I still had some hopes for the tune, but that's also not at all like the one I'm hunting. Next step - go pester everybody I have any acquaintance with on t'other side the border.

I think I've found it. It's called "Nicolas" and it's sung by Julie Daraiche.

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

Tout homme qui prend femme
Se met dans l'embarras Nicolas
Si tu la prends trop laide
Tu t'en repentiras Nicolas

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

Si tu la prends trop laide
Tu t'en repentiras Nicolas
Si tu la prends trop belle
Des cornes t'en porteras Nicolas

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

Si tu la prends trop belle
Des cornes t'en porteras Nicolas
Elle ira à l'église
Son amant la verra Nicolas

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

Elle ira à l'église
Son amant la verra Nicolas
Ils se feront des signes
Que tu ne comprendras pas Nicolas

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

Ils se feront des signes
Que tu ne comprendras pas Nicolas
Elle aura des petits nègres
Qui t'appartiendront pas Nicolas

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

Elle aura des petits nègres
Qui t'appartiendront pas Nicolas
Et toi tu seras fier
D'être appelé papa Nicolas

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

Et toi tu seras fier
D'être appelé papa Nicolas
Tu serais encore mieux
De rester dans le célibat Nicolas

Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon
Tiens tiens tiens on est aussi bien
Bon bon bon de rester garçon

----------------------------------

Look, look, look, it's as fine,
Good, good, good, to stay single.
Every man who takes a wife
Put himself into trouble
If you take her too ugly
You'll be sorry about it.

If you take her too ugly
You'll be sorry about it.
If you take her too beautiful
You'll be a cuckold (lit. "you'll wear horns")

If you take her too beautiful
You'll be a cuckold
She'll go to church
Her lover will see her

She'll go to church
Her lover will see her
They'll make signs to each other
And you won't understand them.

They'll make signs to each other
And you won't understand them.
She'll have baby N...s
Who won't belong to you.

She'll have baby N...s
Who won't belong to you
And you'll be proud
To be called Daddy.

And you'll be proud
To be called Daddy.
You'd be much better
If you stayed celibate.

Merci bien Monique, c'est ça. All the ones I'd run into with good ol' Nicholas have him as the swindler & cuckolder. Nice to see him about to get his own medicine.   :)

It's just negroes, we can spell that out, no?

Mrrzy, "nègres" isn't "just" negroes, is it? Well, at least in France French it isn't and it's why I didn't spell it out.

Maybe to be understood(presumably ironically)as "little darlings", more or less? The sentiments remind me of "Parlez-nous de Boire", which has at least one Cajun version, and to the degree I understand Cajun (not so very), "neg'" is a term of endearment, or at least familiarity. I think if I said it to another man, in Louisiana, it would correspond to "buddy" or "old man", or if to a woman, maybe "dear", or "old girl".

I don't know how much of this is Julie Daraiche's composition and how much trad, but I read today her brief on-line bio, and her family hailed from out in Gaspé, where they tend to think of themselves as Acadiens, rather than as Québécois. Wonder if "neg'" picked up its modern Cajun connotation before they left Canada?

From there about the song "Pauv' 'tit neg'": In Cajun French "negre" is ambiguous. While referring specifically to black men, the term is used freely by Cajuns to refer to one another. The term can have a harsh and pejorative significance, but can also be a term of endearment, as in "mon cher vieux negre", "my dear old n....". The meaning of the term in the context of this song can best be translated as "Poor boy".
