Subject: The Little (Tin/Toy?) Soldier From: timothyg1@aol.com Date: 14 Dec 99 - 01:31 AM One my mother used to sing when I was little... A few of the lines: The little toy soldier is covered with dust... Now don't you go till I come he said And don't you make any noise And hurried off to his trundle bed And dreamed of his little toys But while he was sleeping an Angel came And wakened our little boy blue Anyway, the kid died and the toys wound up collecting dust. A real tear jerker. Anyone heard of it? Thanks, Tim |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Little (Tin/Toy?) Soldier From: Dale Rose Date: 14 Dec 99 - 11:08 AM Can't say at the moment if either is available, but I know of two very nice vocal versions, one by the great Irish tenor, John McCormack, and a much more recent one by The Irish Rovers. I do have McCormack's version on CD and the Rovers on lp, so I would suspect that you are more likely to locate the older version. I just looked, it is on John McCormack in American Song, Pearl/GEMM CD 9971, 1992. The song was recorded in 1916, with music composed by Ethelbert Woodbridge Nevin and the lyrics of course by Eugene Field, 1891. An interesting fact gleaned from the notes ~~ John McCormack owned the original manuscript of the poem. |
