Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: Elmore Date: 29 Mar 17 - 06:52 PM I can't watch these "super" groups over arrange old or new songs. That's just me. |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: GUEST,CupOfTea, no cookies (or scones) Date: 29 Mar 17 - 05:08 PM ... or scorn, but not impressed. I've had male friends tell me it's "sour grapes" on my part because they're young. lovely, obviously talented and vastly successful, while I'm old, baggy grey, poor and not a great musician. I am however a great audience, and I've watched lots of "Celtic" women of all sorts, and, like Phil, think these women just don't have enough substance to their performance to be interesting. I'd tease that same male friend back again that they were "Celtic flavored eye candy." I rather enjoyed the comparison to the Lennon Sisers (same kind of floaty fabric for their dresses). They're a pop version of ethnic trad. If you like that sort of thing you might like them, if you tend to take your music more seriously, they won't be very satisfying. That shows like that ARE popular is more a positive than a negative to my way of thinking. The PBS specials with Peter, Paul & Mary, The Irish Rovers, and these ladies all include some good stuff that may be the first exposure someone has, that gets them to seek out more, look deeper, educate themselves. If someone hadn't given me recordings of Carmel Quinn and the Irish Rovers when I was in grade school, I might not have developed an ear for Tommy Makem, Frank Harte, or a score of others. Celtic Woman just ain't my cup of tea! Joanne in Cleveland (feeling old and trying to be sage instead of cranky) at work |

Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: meself Date: 24 Mar 17 - 12:50 AM ? They're not my cup of tea - but if you like them on youtube, you would probably like them live, I would think .... |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: olddude Date: 23 Mar 17 - 11:11 PM Thanks my friends, I will pass. I figured as much.. |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: GUEST,wow Date: 23 Mar 17 - 09:32 PM Well that's them sorted then! |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: michaelr Date: 23 Mar 17 - 08:12 PM Celtic Woman was cooked up by the management team behind Riverdance to provide a new cash cow. Irish music prettied up and dumbed down for the American PBS audience. I can't stand them. |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: GUEST,lou Judson Date: 23 Mar 17 - 08:11 PM Are they still doing this? Imagine Riverdance compared to your favorie Celtic band with Irish dancers. Expect a glossy, over-smooth arrangement designed for the masses. Or compare Kenny G with Ornette Coleman. Sorta that difference. Mind you, I have not seen them, but for the prices they charge, would not anyway. I just saw them online. I never saw Coleman or Coltrane in person either. Or, watch this 30 second promo and see what YOU think! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jwwBAT_mxg Do those dresses and fake smiles look like real celtic women? Not the ones I know! Lawrence Welk did this in the last century with the Lennon Sisters... on TV. |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: ChanteyLass Date: 23 Mar 17 - 07:54 PM I enjoy watching them on TV but wouldn't pay the ticket price for their performances. If someone gave me a free ticket, though, I'd go. |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: Phil Cooper Date: 23 Mar 17 - 06:39 PM I thought their arrangements were kind of wimpy. I love the version of Carrickfergus that the Band Five Hand Reel did and thought the Celtic woman version paled by comparison. They didn't cut out the "drunk to day, seldom sober" verse, which I thought they might do, so that's in their favor. |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: olddude Date: 23 Mar 17 - 10:53 AM Phil, I appreciate your response. I have no problem with any positive or negative criticism. Tickets today are all expensive for any popular venue. People we respect help in decisions thank you |
Subject: RE: Celtic woman concert From: Phil Cooper Date: 22 Mar 17 - 09:21 PM I saw them on a pbs special a few years back. They sing and play very well. I like my song arrangements with more teeth to them than what Celtic Woman did. In my case you need to consider the source and make up your own mind. I know it's common to disrespect a group that gets successful and I hope I am not doing that with them. |
