I saw them on a pbs special a few years back. They sing and play very well. I like my song arrangements with more teeth to them than what Celtic Woman did. In my case you need to consider the source and make up your own mind. I know it's common to disrespect a group that gets successful and I hope I am not doing that with them.

Phil,
I appreciate your response. I have no problem with any positive or negative criticism. Tickets today are all expensive for any popular venue. People we respect help in decisions thank you

I thought their arrangements were kind of wimpy. I love the version of Carrickfergus that the Band Five Hand Reel did and thought the Celtic woman version paled by comparison. They didn't cut out the "drunk to day, seldom sober" verse, which I thought they might do, so that's in their favor.

I enjoy watching them on TV but wouldn't pay the ticket price for their performances. If someone gave me a free ticket, though, I'd go.

Are they still doing this? Imagine Riverdance compared to your favorie Celtic band with Irish dancers. Expect a glossy, over-smooth arrangement designed for the masses.

Or compare Kenny G with Ornette Coleman. Sorta that difference.

Mind you, I have not seen them, but for the prices they charge, would not anyway. I just saw them online. I never saw Coleman or Coltrane in person either.

Or, watch this 30 second promo and see what YOU think!

Do those dresses and fake smiles look like real celtic women? Not the ones I know!

Lawrence Welk did this in the last century with the Lennon Sisters... on TV.

Celtic Woman was cooked up by the management team behind Riverdance to provide a new cash cow. Irish music prettied up and dumbed down for the American PBS audience. I can't stand them.

... or scorn, but not impressed.

I've had male friends tell me it's "sour grapes" on my part because they're young. lovely, obviously talented and vastly successful, while I'm old, baggy grey, poor and not a great musician.

I am however a great audience, and I've watched lots of "Celtic" women of all sorts, and, like Phil, think these women just don't have enough substance to their performance to be interesting. I'd tease that same male friend back again that they were "Celtic flavored eye candy."   I rather enjoyed the comparison to the Lennon Sisers (same kind of floaty fabric for their dresses). They're a pop version of ethnic trad. If you like that sort of thing you might like them, if you tend to take your music more seriously, they won't be very satisfying.

That shows like that ARE popular is more a positive than a negative to my way of thinking. The PBS specials with Peter, Paul & Mary, The Irish Rovers, and these ladies all include some good stuff that may be the first exposure someone has, that gets them to seek out more, look deeper, educate themselves. If someone hadn't given me recordings of Carmel Quinn and the Irish Rovers when I was in grade school, I might not have developed an ear for Tommy Makem, Frank Harte, or a score of others.

Celtic Woman just ain't my cup of tea!

I can't watch these "super" groups over arrange old or new songs. That's just me.
