From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 17 Dec 99 - 09:44 PM I just heard a song on the radio whose words I never truly listened to before (probably because I'm not that "into" the Carpenters)...now the words have so much meaning for me and since I haven't the luxury of time to write my own poem, I shall borrow the words that convey my sentiments...
This is for a special someone in my life...yes, a fellow mudcatter who I knew before I became a regular/member here...
This is for you...along with all the kissing you want under the mistletoe. Maybe next Christmas we will share together.

Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: TerriM Date: 20 Dec 99 - 12:41 PM the little unpleasantness was a small operation from which I am more or less recovered ( and no, it wasn't to retrieve a mistletoe berry... that's another story Gargoyle, I have a cat you can have... well, two actually, you can take your pick. Not very bright but.... well, just not very bright really. How about it, free to good home, or even an indifferent one??? If not, has anyone got any tips about how to discourage cats from climbing a not very stable xmas tree? |
Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: jeffp Date: 20 Dec 99 - 12:53 PM I've found that a water pistol can be very effective. If you manage to conceal it from the cats, they don't even realize it was you who squirted them. They think the tree itself piddled on them. Yuck, what a concept! Good luck. |

Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: Mbo Date: 20 Dec 99 - 02:16 PM My father and I built a cute little white picket fence about a foot and a half high to put around the tree, since our cat likes to hide under it, and play with the ornaments. We got the pickets at Lowe's--they were supposed to be for a garden, and were connected together with wire. We pulled the individuals pickets off, made them a little shorter, and made cross rails to hold them together. Our tree is in a corner, so the fence is 3-sided, and hinged together. It really works! Boo doesn't even try anything with it in place. It's also really festive! --Mbo |

Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: TerriM Date: 20 Dec 99 - 06:28 PM I'm worried about a water pistol in case the electric fairy lights go up and I have no idea what a b.b gun is! A picket fence sounds like a good idea however garden centres here ( U.K) don't sell anything that doesn't look like a xmas present this time of year. I think my older cat has declared war on the bow at the top of the tree and the younger is merely cannon fodder.Armistice may be declared should a fish be produced in the near future, however I am clean out of our little scaly friends. Anyone got a fish? |

Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: Mick Lowe Date: 20 Dec 99 - 07:04 PM So much catching up to do..and I've only been away a couple of days.. First then.. Liz.. what on earth are you doing standing under the clock at Waterloo?.. you want to be freezing the whatsits off at Hinckley.. then I can get you warmed up in the Queen's Head, providing you give us the odd song/tune or two. As for all you cat owners.. I think you need to make a choice.. tree or cat.. cat or tree.. if you really think you need both then you could try one of the following.. Lead booties for the feline (stops them climbing) A rolled up newspaper with which to beat the said feline into submission any time it attempts to "mount" the tree Perhaps the easiest option.. settle for a smaller tree mounted on a table etc so said thicko pussy doesn't realise it's there If however you've got a really inquistive breed of fur ball you could always visit for a frontal labotemy (apologies re spelling) for your favourite cat Personally I would use the sack and the nearest canal/river.. but eh.. I don't profess to be a cat lover, even at this time of year.. now I suspect that has wound up many springs.. so I'll sit back and see what happens Charles.. what can I say? In such matters of the heart What true gentleman would impart Such details of his heart's desire That when such facts would then transpire To announce his love to all the world And expose their secret to all unfurled Whilst disrecretion should be the trade to woo And leave you all just wondering who Peace to you all Mick |
Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: Caitrin Date: 21 Dec 99 - 12:00 AM I attempted to use classical conditioning to prevent my cat from climbing the Christmas tree for my psychology project. I was attempting the water spraying method. Unfortunately, the cat was a little too specific in his conditioning. It doesn't keep him from climbing the tree, he just doesn't climb it when I'm in the room. |
Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Dec 99 - 02:53 AM We just let our little cat climb and then fall out of the tree. Once he'd landed on his head a few times, even HE got the idea and he is even thicker than Terri's two; whom I've met and they are everything she says, and more..... Mick, where is Hinkley? If it is further north than Islington, I ain't gonna be there, I dunno, three flakes of watery snow and the country grinds to a halt. Bet it's all gone by Christmas Eve! Here it is, three days before Christmas and there isn't a stick of holly to be found. The only tree in my garden with berry (singular)is also in flower, at a time when there are no others flowering to pollinate it, and the other two hollies have decided to hibernate. Managed to get one small twig with a berry on it, smooth leaves, so I rule the house again..... (old tradition, if the first holly in the house has smooth leaves, (no prickles) the woman rules. If it has sharp leave, i.e., prickles, the man rules. He hasn't managed to so far in 9 years together......) Good job I found some mistletoe then, isn't it. Happy Solstice to you all, keep well, and don't worry, after tonight, the evenings start to get lighter and Spring is on its way!!! LTS |
Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: SingsIrish Songs Date: 21 Dec 99 - 02:34 PM Lots to catch up on from the last few days! I like the idea of the picket fence even without a cat! One of my favourite tree decorating items was the year my Dad made a small ladder and propped it against the (artificial) tree attaching it to the "trunk" with a support wire and place one of my old dolls (a 3 ft "walking" doll) on the ladder in a pretty dress as if she were decorating the tree... I can't even find any artificial mistletoe where I live! But I have holly and ivy... I need to say this, Charles (seed), that I must keep mum 'bout the one I love, though my heart wants to cry it out. It's fun to raise eyebrows and make people wonder just which fellow has won my heart. But for now it's a secret and should the time come, it will be announced with a cheer and a shout... UGH! and to think I have a BA in English Lit! I'm off to frost more cookies...and start wrapping gifts. Heh, let's have a "wrapping party"! Anyone have a good mulled wine recipe?? (Always wanted to try that.) Mary |
Subject: RE: I've just hung the Mistletoe at Mudcat! From: Mick Lowe Date: 21 Dec 99 - 05:45 PM Liz No problems in finding holly out here in the sticks..then again we haven't got your pollution problems (vague reference to Princess Alice if you recall that far back.. And yes Hinckley is in that "foreign country" you Londoners refer to as North of Watford... tho' mine host in the Queen's is a born and bred Cockney.. you can't win them all I suppose..
