'Tis a kiss that you want, my dear 'Seed?
Well come here, Man, and get what you need!
While the 'puppies' pile on
We'll break into a song
And see if the others will follow our lead

Kisses to Max and Bert at the 'Cat
And Howie the Elf in his hat
Let it never be said
That I e'er went to bed
Without checking where the 'Cats were at!

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MISTLETOE BOUGH (Thomas Haynes Bayly)
From: McGrath of Harlow
Date: 15 Dec 99 - 02:14 PM

It could all end in tears - as in Thomas Haynes Bayly's:The Mistletoe Bough

The mistletoe hung in the castle hall,
The holly branch shone on the old oak wall;
And the baron's retainers were blithe and gay
And keeping their Christmas holiday.
The baron beheld, with a father's pride
His beautiful child, young Lovell's bride;
While she with her bright eyes seemed to be
The star of the goodly company.

"I'm weary of dancing now," she cried;
"Here tarry a moment—Ill hide, I'll hide!
And Lovell, be sure thou'rt first to trace
The clue to my secret lurking place."
Away she ran—and her friends began
Each tower to search, and each nook to scan;
And young Lovell cried, "Oh where dost thou hide?
I'm lonesome without thee, my own dear bride.

They sought her that night! And they sought her next day!
And the sought her in vain when a week passed away!
In the highest—the lowest—the loneliest spot,
Young Lovell sought wildly—but found her not.
And years flew by, and their grief at last
Was told as a sorrowful tale long past;
And when Lovell appeared, the children cried
"See the old man weeps for his fairy bride."

At length an oak chest, that had long lay hid,
Was found in the castle—they raised the lid—
And a skeleton form lay mouldering there,
In the bridal wreath of that lady fair!
Oh sad was her fate!—in sportive jest
She hid from her lord in the old oak chest.
It closed with a spring! And, dreadful doom,
The bride lay clasp'd in her living tomb

In the traditional carol sessions in the pubs of Sheffield, this is a favourite party piece.

Is it coincidence or fate or whatever that I've got Cyndi Lauper singing "True Colours" on the cd player as I read this..
I might even bring in a good old Leicestershire saying and say.. "What Are You Lot Like?"
I'm glad tho' the mudcat is keeping alive the spirit of Saturnalia (apologies if I spelt that wrong).. i.e the festives before JC was born
And so many people to take to task for either not including me or offering their smooches elsewhere...
Sometimes it's lonely standing under the mistletoe.. LOL
Though I need to say this so bear with me.. MARY.. major detention...
And now I'm gone but not without saying, have a great Christmas you lot

I must say I WONDER about some of the replies here..
If you were all over here in the UK and knew what I meant I would say.." What are you guys like????"
Instead I shall say .. thank you Áine for the poem and I'm standing under the mistletoe, but alas the major snogging has already been reservedby a very special catter..
Remember a love affair is not only for Christmas..
I'm out of here

I just heard a song on the radio whose words I never truly listened to before (probably because I'm not that "into" the Carpenters)...now the words have so much meaning for me and since I haven't the luxury of time to write my own poem, I shall borrow the words that convey my sentiments...

This is for a special someone in my life...yes, a fellow mudcatter who I knew before I became a regular/member here...

This is for you...along with all the kissing you want under the mistletoe. Maybe next Christmas we will share together.

From,

"Your angel"

Merry Christmas Darling
By: The Carpenters

Greeting cards have all been sent
The Christmas rush is through
But I still have one wish to make
A special one for you:

Merry Christmas darling,
We're apart that's true
But I can dream
And in my dreams
I'm Christmasing with you

Holidays are joyful
There's always something new
But every day's a holiday
When I'm near you

The lights on my tree
I wish you could see
I wish it every day
The logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say

That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year too
I've just one wish on this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you

The logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say
That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year too

I've just one wish on this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you...

I wish I were with you
Merry Christmas Darling

What was the little unpleasantness then, did the mistletoe berry get stuck up your nose again?

And you are getting whatever is left under the tree, because the label fell off your present and we can't sort them out without the phair Phoebe "helping".....

I think it's spuds which are hung at the Mudcat. Mistletoe, a lovely thing, may be attached, affixed, or adhered, but we save hung for spuds. Ask Mickus Maximus. E.S.

the little unpleasantness was a small operation from which I am more or less recovered ( and no, it wasn't to retrieve a mistletoe berry... that's another story ). If I'm getting what's left under the tree, I expect it's either going to be pine needles or the bit of the fairy that fell off when Phoebe tried to dissect it... ah well.

Gargoyle, I have a cat you can have... well, two actually, you can take your pick. Not very bright but.... well, just not very bright really. How about it, free to good home, or even an indifferent one??? If not, has anyone got any tips about how to discourage cats from climbing a not very stable xmas tree?

I've found that a water pistol can be very effective. If you manage to conceal it from the cats, they don't even realize it was you who squirted them. They think the tree itself piddled on them. Yuck, what a concept! Good luck.

My father and I built a cute little white picket fence about a foot and a half high to put around the tree, since our cat likes to hide under it, and play with the ornaments. We got the pickets at Lowe's--they were supposed to be for a garden, and were connected together with wire. We pulled the individuals pickets off, made them a little shorter, and made cross rails to hold them together. Our tree is in a corner, so the fence is 3-sided, and hinged together. It really works! Boo doesn't even try anything with it in place. It's also really festive!

I'm worried about a water pistol in case the electric fairy lights go up and I have no idea what a b.b gun is! A picket fence sounds like a good idea however garden centres here ( U.K) don't sell anything that doesn't look like a xmas present this time of year.

I think my older cat has declared war on the bow at the top of the tree and the younger is merely cannon fodder.Armistice may be declared should a fish be produced in the near future, however I am clean out of our little scaly friends. Anyone got a fish?

So much catching up to do..and I've only been away a couple of days..
First then.. Liz.. what on earth are you doing standing under the clock at Waterloo?.. you want to be freezing the whatsits off at Hinckley.. then I can get you warmed up in the Queen's Head, providing you give us the odd song/tune or two.
As for all you cat owners.. I think you need to make a choice.. tree or cat.. cat or tree.. if you really think you need both then you could try one of the following..

Lead booties for the feline (stops them climbing)
A rolled up newspaper with which to beat the said feline into submission any time it attempts to "mount" the tree
Perhaps the easiest option.. settle for a smaller tree mounted on a table etc so said thicko pussy doesn't realise it's there
If however you've got a really inquistive breed of fur ball you could always visit for a frontal labotemy (apologies re spelling) for your favourite cat
Personally I would use the sack and the nearest canal/river.. but eh.. I don't profess to be a cat lover, even at this time of year.. now I suspect that has wound up many springs.. so I'll sit back and see what happens

Charles.. what can I say?

In such matters of the heart
What true gentleman would impart
Such details of his heart's desire
That when such facts would then transpire
To announce his love to all the world
And expose their secret to all unfurled
Whilst disrecretion should be the trade to woo
And leave you all just wondering who

Peace to you all
Mick

I attempted to use classical conditioning to prevent my cat from climbing the Christmas tree for my psychology project. I was attempting the water spraying method. Unfortunately, the cat was a little too specific in his conditioning. It doesn't keep him from climbing the tree, he just doesn't climb it when I'm in the room.

We just let our little cat climb and then fall out of the tree. Once he'd landed on his head a few times, even HE got the idea and he is even thicker than Terri's two; whom I've met and they are everything she says, and more.....

Mick, where is Hinkley? If it is further north than Islington, I ain't gonna be there, I dunno, three flakes of watery snow and the country grinds to a halt. Bet it's all gone by Christmas Eve!

Here it is, three days before Christmas and there isn't a stick of holly to be found. The only tree in my garden with berry (singular)is also in flower, at a time when there are no others flowering to pollinate it, and the other two hollies have decided to hibernate. Managed to get one small twig with a berry on it, smooth leaves, so I rule the house again..... (old tradition, if the first holly in the house has smooth leaves, (no prickles) the woman rules. If it has sharp leave, i.e., prickles, the man rules. He hasn't managed to so far in 9 years together......)

Good job I found some mistletoe then, isn't it.

Happy Solstice to you all, keep well, and don't worry, after tonight, the evenings start to get lighter and Spring is on its way!!!

Lots to catch up on from the last few days!

I like the idea of the picket fence even without a cat! One of my favourite tree decorating items was the year my Dad made a small ladder and propped it against the (artificial) tree attaching it to the "trunk" with a support wire and place one of my old dolls (a 3 ft "walking" doll) on the ladder in a pretty dress as if she were decorating the tree...

I can't even find any artificial mistletoe where I live! But I have holly and ivy...

I need to say this, Charles (seed), that I must keep mum 'bout the one I love, though my heart wants to cry it out. It's fun to raise eyebrows and make people wonder just which fellow has won my heart. But for now it's a secret and should the time come, it will be announced with a cheer and a shout...

UGH! and to think I have a BA in English Lit!

I'm off to frost more cookies...and start wrapping gifts.

Heh, let's have a "wrapping party"! Anyone have a good mulled wine recipe?? (Always wanted to try that.)

Mary

No problems in finding holly out here in the sticks..then again we haven't got your pollution problems (vague reference to Princess Alice if you recall that far back..)
And yes Hinckley is in that "foreign country" you Londoners refer to as North of Watford... tho' mine host in the Queen's is a born and bred Cockney.. you can't win them all I suppose..
Happy Chrimble to one and all
