Link 1

Link 2

Link 3

Let's see, Micca, here's one for you "X". Definitely one for Spaw! "X" And Big Mick "X" and Brakn "X" and Matthew B. "X" and Alan from Australia "X" and a Big Soppy One for Mick "the Prof" Lowe..."X" SEG!!!

If I'm missing anyone I'll add on to the list later...goodness, it's 4am!

It is probably better to draw several sanitized sheets over that episode. But, If like me you are a natural "wind up" artist (That is wind as in clockwork not wind as in Fart) try asking any fundamentalist christians about this. The explaination I have is the mistletoe is hung at the entance to the Sacred space for pagan rituals and you kiss the High Priestess as you enter and from this the Custom arose. BTW What is the only Christian church in the UK in which mistletoe is permitted? (shut up Liz) and put up the words of "let the Turtle be unbroken" on the correct thread of course. Lots more smoochies all round.

Let all the tongues of nations speak
Let all the tongues unite
There's only one mouth my tongue doth seek
Just whose I shall not say despite

My ever undying love untold
Which now I hint at you
If only now it's pages unfold
I'd kiss below the mistletoe

My love will be forever so
Despite what may come to pass
And a kiss beneath the mistletoe
A lifetime hence will last

And if my dreams should not be true
And our seperate ways forced to go
I shall always be haunted by thoughts of you
And a promised kiss beneath the mistletoe

Pretty crap I know.. but those "Know", will hopefully skip over the imperfections..

Here's a special big juicy wet one for me darlin' Micca . . . and something for the rest of ya --

Well, I'm standing here under the 'toe
Kissing every dang man (and Mbo)
Why haven't Micca I've kissed?
Oh, he's just gone to get pissed
Geez, this evening is bound to get slow

Hark, is that me dear man that I see?
Is it true? Is he heading for me?
'Oh me darlin',' I cry
And I'm smooched, me oh my
Ach, me heart – tis a flutter times three!

For the rest of you blokes, here a smooch
For the ladies, what's left of the hooch
For the rest of you all
Them that's left in the hall
I blow kisses with mon petite bouche!

Sure thing Mick, just a wee one tho?
And how about what a friend of mine calls a "puppy pile"? (NO, not that.) It's her description of what our 12 - 14 year old kids do at the end of a rowdy evening... they end up in a pile on the sofa or the floor. Lots of wriggling and giggling and snuggling and not too much one on one or serious stuff.
I've missed you all too. Peter Pan is just winding up this next weekend, and then I'll have to put all the costumes away (and get them cleaned and washed and mended and...) and, gosh, I may have a day or two to prepare for Christmas.
I like mistletoe.
Blessings,
Barbara

Good lord, what a shameless lot ye all are--and how I love you for it! And Bonnie, lass, you are ravishing--even if somewhat out of season in Toronto--in that outfit. Good plan to lose the potato. Great idea to get a good jump on the season, Mary Kate: so many lasses, so little time (and it's good to see you back with us--we have indeed missed you--and forgiven you are for forgettin' me). What a fine party this is--lead me to the wassail, Earth Spirit: take a sip and let me kiss it off your lips. And Emily, love--sorry to have missed you in Seattle makin' yer lovely statement. And Áine! You're even more beautiful than I imagined...Caitrin, I don't know what's the matter with that lad Embo; he's standin' right beside you and coming on to every other woman in the place. And they're cuddling the lad and jouncin' him on their knee (and I'm as jealous as kin be)--and Susan, your garlic and hot peppers are the sweetest perfume. Mian, I'm sure your weighting will help you with Cleigh--he does like his women buff, as the kids say. Dani, I think Art has three each for all the lasses, and maybe more for you--but plant one on me before you go see--and ask him for a song and a story: let's get this party going! And Alison, I know you have eyes only for Mick, but let me have your lips for a moment. And here's my first and best Mudcat love, the blessed Barbara: how I have longed for your kiss...

Bonnie, enjoy the party. Your uncle is in no hurry to leave. I'll just have a bit of madeira while I wait...

Squeaky, did I leave you off my list? I'm getting senile--and I swear it isn't because of your hairy chest. I had a message half composed in my mind to you first time through, then as I was skimming to see who was in the room the second time, I missed you. Now I'm back just for you (I haven't even looked to see who else might have come into the room since my last round of smooches). C'mon, now, don't go away mad...that's a good girl. Subject: Lyr Add: THE MISTLETOE BOUGH (Thomas Haynes Bayly)
From: McGrath of Harlow
Date: 15 Dec 99 - 02:14 PM

It could all end in tears - as in Thomas Haynes Bayly's:The Mistletoe Bough

The mistletoe hung in the castle hall,
The holly branch shone on the old oak wall;
And the baron's retainers were blithe and gay
And keeping their Christmas holiday.
The baron beheld, with a father's pride
His beautiful child, young Lovell's bride;
While she with her bright eyes seemed to be
The star of the goodly company.

"I'm weary of dancing now," she cried;
"Here tarry a moment—Ill hide, I'll hide!
And Lovell, be sure thou'rt first to trace
The clue to my secret lurking place."
Away she ran—and her friends began
Each tower to search, and each nook to scan;
And young Lovell cried, "Oh where dost thou hide?
I'm lonesome without thee, my own dear bride.

They sought her that night! And they sought her next day!
And the sought her in vain when a week passed away!
In the highest—the lowest—the loneliest spot,
Young Lovell sought wildly—but found her not.
And years flew by, and their grief at last
Was told as a sorrowful tale long past;
And when Lovell appeared, the children cried
"See the old man weeps for his fairy bride."

At length an oak chest, that had long lay hid,
Was found in the castle—they raised the lid—
And a skeleton form lay mouldering there,
In the bridal wreath of that lady fair!
Oh sad was her fate!—in sportive jest
She hid from her lord in the old oak chest.
It closed with a spring! And, dreadful doom,
The bride lay clasp'd in her living tomb

In the traditional carol sessions in the pubs of Sheffield, this is a favourite party piece.

I just heard a song on the radio whose words I never truly listened to before (probably because I'm not that "into" the Carpenters)...now the words have so much meaning for me and since I haven't the luxury of time to write my own poem, I shall borrow the words that convey my sentiments...

This is for a special someone in my life...yes, a fellow mudcatter who I knew before I became a regular/member here...

This is for you...along with all the kissing you want under the mistletoe. Maybe next Christmas we will share together.

From,

"Your angel"

Merry Christmas Darling
By: The Carpenters

Greeting cards have all been sent
The Christmas rush is through
But I still have one wish to make
A special one for you:

Merry Christmas darling,
We're apart that's true
But I can dream
And in my dreams
I'm Christmasing with you

Holidays are joyful
There's always something new
But every day's a holiday
When I'm near you

The lights on my tree
I wish you could see
I wish it every day
The logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say

That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year too
I've just one wish on this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you

The logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say
That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year too

I've just one wish on this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you...

I wish I were with you
Merry Christmas Darling

the little unpleasantness was a small operation from which I am more or less recovered ( and no, it wasn't to retrieve a mistletoe berry... that's another story ). If I'm getting what's left under the tree, I expect it's either going to be pine needles or the bit of the fairy that fell off when Phoebe tried to dissect it... ah well.

Gargoyle, I have a cat you can have... well, two actually, you can take your pick. Not very bright but.... well, just not very bright really. How about it, free to good home, or even an indifferent one??? If not, has anyone got any tips about how to discourage cats from climbing a not very stable xmas tree?

I've found that a water pistol can be very effective. If you manage to conceal it from the cats, they don't even realize it was you who squirted them. They think the tree itself piddled on them. Yuck, what a concept! Good luck.

My father and I built a cute little white picket fence about a foot and a half high to put around the tree, since our cat likes to hide under it, and play with the ornaments. We got the pickets at Lowe's--they were supposed to be for a garden, and were connected together with wire. We pulled the individuals pickets off, made them a little shorter, and made cross rails to hold them together. Our tree is in a corner, so the fence is 3-sided, and hinged together. It really works! Boo doesn't even try anything with it in place. It's also really festive!

I'm worried about a water pistol in case the electric fairy lights go up and I have no idea what a b.b gun is! A picket fence sounds like a good idea however garden centres here ( U.K) don't sell anything that doesn't look like a xmas present this time of year.

I think my older cat has declared war on the bow at the top of the tree and the younger is merely cannon fodder.Armistice may be declared should a fish be produced in the near future, however I am clean out of our little scaly friends. Anyone got a fish?

So much catching up to do..and I've only been away a couple of days..
First then.. Liz.. what on earth are you doing standing under the clock at Waterloo?.. you want to be freezing the whatsits off at Hinckley.. then I can get you warmed up in the Queen's Head, providing you give us the odd song/tune or two.
As for all you cat owners.. I think you need to make a choice.. tree or cat.. cat or tree.. if you really think you need both then you could try one of the following..

Lead booties for the feline (stops them climbing)
A rolled up newspaper with which to beat the said feline into submission any time it attempts to "mount" the tree
Perhaps the easiest option.. settle for a smaller tree mounted on a table etc so said thicko pussy doesn't realise it's there
If however you've got a really inquistive breed of fur ball you could always visit for a frontal labotemy (apologies re spelling) for your favourite cat
Personally I would use the sack and the nearest canal/river.. but eh.. I don't profess to be a cat lover, even at this time of year.. now I suspect that has wound up many springs.. so I'll sit back and see what happens

Charles.. what can I say?

In such matters of the heart
What true gentleman would impart
Such details of his heart's desire
That when such facts would then transpire
To announce his love to all the world
And expose their secret to all unfurled
Whilst disrecretion should be the trade to woo
And leave you all just wondering who

Peace to you all
Mick

I attempted to use classical conditioning to prevent my cat from climbing the Christmas tree for my psychology project. I was attempting the water spraying method. Unfortunately, the cat was a little too specific in his conditioning. It doesn't keep him from climbing the tree, he just doesn't climb it when I'm in the room.

We just let our little cat climb and then fall out of the tree. Once he'd landed on his head a few times, even HE got the idea and he is even thicker than Terri's two; whom I've met and they are everything she says, and more.....

Mick, where is Hinkley? If it is further north than Islington, I ain't gonna be there, I dunno, three flakes of watery snow and the country grinds to a halt. Bet it's all gone by Christmas Eve!

Here it is, three days before Christmas and there isn't a stick of holly to be found. The only tree in my garden with berry (singular)is also in flower, at a time when there are no others flowering to pollinate it, and the other two hollies have decided to hibernate. Managed to get one small twig with a berry on it, smooth leaves, so I rule the house again..... (old tradition, if the first holly in the house has smooth leaves, (no prickles) the woman rules. If it has sharp leave, i.e., prickles, the man rules. He hasn't managed to so far in 9 years together......)

Good job I found some mistletoe then, isn't it.

Happy Solstice to you all, keep well, and don't worry, after tonight, the evenings start to get lighter and Spring is on its way!!!

Lots to catch up on from the last few days!

I like the idea of the picket fence even without a cat! One of my favourite tree decorating items was the year my Dad made a small ladder and propped it against the (artificial) tree attaching it to the "trunk" with a support wire and place one of my old dolls (a 3 ft "walking" doll) on the ladder in a pretty dress as if she were decorating the tree...

I can't even find any artificial mistletoe where I live! But I have holly and ivy...

I need to say this, Charles (seed), that I must keep mum 'bout the one I love, though my heart wants to cry it out. It's fun to raise eyebrows and make people wonder just which fellow has won my heart. But for now it's a secret and should the time come, it will be announced with a cheer and a shout...

UGH! and to think I have a BA in English Lit!

I'm off to frost more cookies...and start wrapping gifts.

Heh, let's have a "wrapping party"! Anyone have a good mulled wine recipe?? (Always wanted to try that.)

Mary

No problems in finding holly out here in the sticks..then again we haven't got your pollution problems (vague reference to Princess Alice if you recall that far back..)
And yes Hinckley is in that "foreign country" you Londoners refer to as North of Watford... tho' mine host in the Queen's is a born and bred Cockney.. you can't win them all I suppose..

You can get little mulled wine sachets that do all the hard work for you but, if you can't find them we just simmer wine ( not boil) with a cinnamon stick, some fresh grated nutmeg, a few cloves, orange and lemon peel and 2 tablespoons of demerara sugar( or to taste).

If you are feeling really adventurous, you could add a tot of rum or brandy as well. I would advise wrapping presents before, not during :)!

And to simmer the wine use (with care) a microwave oven, it heats without alcohol loss due to boiling. It is the 4th reason for having a microwave , for things that are difficult or impossible to do otherwise.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! I'll have to try the mulled wine--from scratch seeing as I have all the ingredients! And the touch of rum or brandy sounds marvelous! Thanks Terri! And that's a great hint re the microwave, Micca!

With all the toys I have to wrap, I'll definitely need a "nip" afterwards! LOL

Again, Best wishes to one and all!

Emily Rain, one of the problems with mulling wine is that the heating of the red wine accentuates the tannin in the wine, (thats the stuff that makes your teeth feel furry), the way to offset this is to add sugar(or the sweetner of your choice) and spices and use a microwave to warm as mentioned, this reduces the "cooking time". If you are in the UK a reasonable Bulgarian Cabernet Sauvignon would do and about 2 ounces of spirit of choice, zest of orange or lemon and, cinnamon and ground cloves and spices of choice, go easy on the nutmeg as too much is hallucinogenic and Myristica poisoning is distinctly unpleasant, being drunk or worse, hung over with Hallucinations, no thanks. Ideally your local Health food shop will do sort of mulling "Bouquet Garni" and dark beer and cider can mull really well, too. Go for the sweeter end of the range tho' Guiness mulled is HORRIBLE.

Banjo Bonnie - DON'T WASH THE BED!!!!!

Someone in the UK has just won a stupid amount of cash for exhibiting hers in the Tate Gallery, as an exhibit in the Turner Prize competition!

You could display it as an original, or frame it, just think how lovely those grapes will look squished against the glass in the frame. And the rubber chicken will add that hint of mystery. I'd take the celery out though, it will only go rotten and smell.....

Leave the celery, just varnish it. Emily, don't listen to Micca, he's a fearful wine snob! (oh, yes you are!)We use whatever is cheap and just add more sugar if it's a little tannic. And he probably did mean a tot per serving, he usually does. I've been stood hopefully under this misletoe for days now, not that I'm hinting or anything you understand... it's just that some people get kisses and some people don't, if you see what I mean and ...., well, there's always next year, I suppose.

Emily rain mentioned that one because its available for about $5-7 dollars a bottle here, which is cheap for the quality.Of course any goodish red would do but avoid the very expensive or the Wine Fairy will come and bash you on the bonce with her wand!!!

One of the few fringe benefits is the bottle of Woods 100 lashed to the mast.

We set sail for the azur waters of the North Sea in January, now the nights are drawing out nicely.

to return to the tree climbing cats please feel free to add to this
Chorus
Cats on christmas trees
Cats on tiles
Cats with fur balls that go on for miles
Cats with there faces wreathed in smiles
As they decimate the Christmas decorations

The moggy is a lonely bloke
Rarely gets a Rum and coke
But when he does he goes for broke
As he vomits up the lot on the hearthrug
chorus
At christmas time the cats go mad
They rip the sweater that was meant for Dad
The eat the food before its had
as they revel in the joys of dissapation

they eat the tinsel and the mistletoe
the chew the Christmas lamps until thy blow
then they swallow one and watch the glow
as it travels through their stomach and intestines

a cat with food you can not trust
it never knows whether to sh*t or burst
And I'm never sure which outcome is the worst
As they revel in the joys of overeating

A Mogs your friend except at christmas time
When it suddenly gets this urge to climb
And sticks up 2 fingers to "old lang syne"
As it revels in an orgy of destruction

Sorry, Lizzie. It was me!

It wasn't deliberate, but does bring to mind New Year '84, when I was sludge-gulped at midnight by the village femme fatale, and I contracted a rampant dose of glandular fever, which I have never fully recovered from.

Dangerous thing, snogging, even if it is virtual, it seems! Sorry you had such a crap time of it, and hope yer back on yer pins for New Years Eve.

I'm playing an all night session down on Mendip, and will probably end up getting me kit off with the druids, downwind of the beacon on Maesbury Hill. Can't wait!!!!

Listen if you can to a Les Barker CD, called 'A Cardi and Bloke', the noise like a demented bat that stops the show frequently is me. I giggle. I giggle dreadfully.....

That is all you need to know, so there is no need for TerriM, Spawn of TerriM or Micca to elucidate is there.....
