At my spectacular aunt's funeral, some of the family sang Morning Has Broken, most beautifully I may add, at National Cathedral.

I have been moved to rediscover the old Cat Stevens from my adolescence - Tea for the Tillerman, Mona Bone Jakon, Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at 4, and the soundtrack to Harold and Maude. Which last I didn't actually encounter till early adulthood, but the only song I didn't already know was If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out.

Boy, has that music aged gracefully.

There is a bagel place in town voted Most likely to play a song you're completely forgotten about, yet still remember all the words to.

That is kind of how I feel about Cat Stevens.

Whom have you rediscovered lately is one question, and havent's his lyrics stood the test of time is another.

I looked for rediscovery threads and didn't see any, and none of the many Cat Stevens threads were on point.

For me it has been about encountering someone I missed back in the day.

During my youth in the US, I had no clue who Peter Green was. The first I heard of Peter Green was when I was reading an Eric Clapton interview in Melody Maker; then I quickly confirmed that Green had followed Clapton into John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. For years I listened to Fleetwood Mac on the radio, and had no idea that Peter Green was a founding member.

It was tremendous to hear Green's Fleetwood Mac songs for the first time, and frustrating to think how completely I missed him at the time.

I liked Rumours, and a couple of songs from the album with Rhiannon, but didn't know about Stevie Nicks either! She was just in town here, actually.

Eva Cassidy, The Beers Family, Jim Kweskin, Ed Miller. They all do a lot of covers, and these covers have stood the test of time.

Very interesting topic Mrrzy, thanks for starting it. I think there are a number of bands that don.t get much attention today but were great. My list would include Savoy Brown, Amazing Blondel and the early Strawbs recordings, especially the one with sandy Denny. There was a Canadian Band called "Courage of Lassie,". They were great.
I will probably think of more later. Oh and the very early Hoyt Axton records.

Wow! Someone doesn't know Kevin Ayers, latterly of this parish is southern France - Joy For A Toy, ex-Caravan etc; Roy Wood, famous Brummie, Move, Wizzard etc, and Heinz Burt, bassist with 60s chart toppers The Tornadoes, I believe. All old rockers and little to do with folk music.Less interesting to re-discover than discover I think. Recently I came across Christy Dignam, singing with Finbar Furey (see YouTube). What an amazing singer with a range crossing rock, folk and bel canto. He's clearly not well, and getting on and I wondered how I'd never come across him before.

A day or two ago, I turned on the car radio, and got a jolt from the past. It has been decades -- not merely years, decades -- since I last heard the cheeky charming up-tempo business called "Grey Seal." This is Bernie Taupin and Elton John many years ago, when both were young and their songwriting partnership was tight and lively.

"Grey Seal" takes me back to the days when I could not understand a fraction of the words I heard on the radio. I didn't even understand the title to "Grey Seal,"   or was that "Gray Seal"....

Speaking of Elton John, I sometimes dig out his Madman Across The Water" and it does take me back. I lost interest in a lot of his stuff after that, but I still am very fond of this record.

What I find upon re-listening to all the old Cat Stevens is that he really grokked the human condition - nothing has changed.

Tonight - Beck, recently the Scottish "sophistopop" groups such as Danny Wilson, Lloyd Cole and Del Amitri. Played The Move's Greatest Hits the other day. Actually supported them (The Move)at York Assembly Rooms in 1968!

I have a very old cd that I found at charity shop, Graham Parker, Live Alone In America....great recording by a not very ewell known artists. I will also mention Gerry Rafferty and his wonderful City to City album.

Where is my post about how not all of Moustaki has stood the test of time... his lovely lament about the death of the young postman, which severs the connection between the two long-distance lovers, doesn't hold up in a day of email/facebook/whatever the newest instant conversation thing is, but Le facteur is still a great song not only about failed young love, but about the far-reaching consequences of young death...

Hello, Mrrzy..I never "undiscovered" Leonard Cohen. Just a wonderful poet and songwriter. I have been going back to a few old Jethro Tull albums lately, especially Aqualung and Songs From The Wood.

Always had Heavy Horses in my car, but yeah, I need to revisit Songs from the Wood. I have a great memory of refusing to translate the lyrics of Thick as a Brick when my Hungarian was good!

I guess I'd like to distinguish great old music that we still love/love again from lyrics that are still true today, the way Le facteur isn't because snail mail isn't how long-distance lovers communicate any more.

Seals and Crofts? I still cry at The Boy Down The Road...

A couple of Saturdays ago I stayed up all night with a bottle of rum, cola, and Doritos
listening to new remasters of Move and Roy Wood CDs on a pair of high quality headphones..

Come daybreak I wasn't in the mood for sleeping, so spent a few hours listening to Beatles tracks on playlist shuffle...

This confirmed what I felt over 45 years ago when I first discovered cheap Move compilation LPs,
that although The Move were considered a 2nd rate band in comparison,
The Beatles tracks actually sounded duller, over restrained and contained,
lacking the vitality, dynamics and reckless musical imagination of Roy Wood and The Move.

Even the Beatles more surreal and experimental tracks hailed as revolutionary at the time,
sounded conservative, corporate, lacklustre and tame, compared to The Move....

It is a very good album Mrrzy, as is his album Minstrel in the Gallery. Two of his earlier records, Standup and Benefit, are also very good. Hope you give them a try and enjoy them. I have always felt that they were a very under rated group. Oh, A Group from the nineties, "Timbuk Three" are very good, especially their first album, I think they only did two.

Sly and the Family Stone.

This pop slash soul-music group had enormous success before they came apart, with at least a couple of drug casualties.

Now Honda sells cars with one of their hit songs.

Back in the day, it is reported, before they became hugely famous and successful but when their first album was for sale, Miles Davis, who always kept one ear near the ground, pounced on their first album and was playing it for people -- listen, these guys have lightning in a bottle.

Eric Anderson made two wonderful albums in the early seventies, not quite folk, not quite pop. Blue River (1972) and Be True To You (1975). I still listen to them on vinyl, I love the old hisses, and pops almost as much as I like to songs.
