Was 'schoo' a spelling mistake or a nod to the Tinkers? :-)

ah right, cheers. rugby's about the only sport I've ever played (had to at schoo, was briefly quite a good full-backl) so I guess I should have known that.

Definitely Rugby League. The 13-a-side game is native to Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Having worked regularly with the Tinkers, 30 odd years ago, I can assure you that it would have been rugby "league". "Union" would be 30.

I'm interested in certain references in the (beautiful) song The Lark by Oldham Tinkers.

"then she sang of a meadow by a river of sorts
where 26 men fought a battle in shorts
without effort she to her fair altitude soared
then she dropped like a stone and she whistled the score
screaming "Saddleworth that's not enough!"

That reference to men wearing shorts made me think of football, as did "the score", but 26 men is too many for a football team, right?
