Does any one Know where I can get the words to this French Carol? I know it's popular in Canadian communities, I assume France also. I realize it's a bit late to be building Christmas reporatoir, but I just got the request.

From: danleighton

If you are thinking of "Il Est Ne Le Divin Enfant" here is (nearly all of!) a translation that I had to learn for a carol concert on Friday. We weren't allowed the words which is why I can remember it but I messed up the last verse then as well. Ah well.

Love Ivy B* (but using Dan Leighton's computer at the moment)

BORN ON EARTH THE DIVINE CHRIST CHILD

CHO: Born on earth the divine Christ child
Oboes rejoice with bagpipes vying
Born on earth the divine Christ child
Sing to welcome the savior mild

'Tis four thousand years and more
Men his birth have been prophesying
'Tis four thousand years and more
While we longed for the joys in store. CHO.

Ah such beauty and charm adore!
Ah such perfection of grace undying
Ah such beauty and charm adore!
Promised us of days of yore. CHO.

In a stable here on earth
Jesus in a manger lying
In a stable here on earth
Oh how lovely our savior's birth. CHO.

Jesus savior heaven's lord
(Argh! Can't remember the rest of this one! Sorry!)

IL EST NE, LE DIVIN ENFANT
18th Century French Carol

Refrain:
Il est ne, le divin Enfant,
Jouez, hautbois, resonnez, musettes;
Il est ne, le divin Enfant;
Chantons tous son avenement!

Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
Nous le promettaient les Prophetes;
Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
Nous attendions cet heurex temps.

Refrain

Ah! qu'll est beau, qu'il est charmant,
Que ses graces sont parfaites!
Ah! qu'll est beau, qu'll est charmant,
Qu'il est doux le divin Enfant!

Refrain

Une etable est son logement,
Unpeu de paille, sa couchette,
Une etable est son logement,
Pour un Dieu, quel abaissement!

Refrain

O Jesus! O Roi tout puissant!
Tout petit enfant que vous etes,
O Jesus! O Roi tout puissant!
Regnez sur nous entierement!

Refrain

English Translation:
HE IS BORN, THE HOLY CHILD

Refrain:
He is born, the holy Child,
Play the oboe and bagpipes merrily!
He is born, the holy Child,
Sing we all of the Savior Mild.

Through long ages of the past,
Prophets have foretold His coming;
Through long ages of the past;
Now the time has come at last.

Refrain

O how lovely, O how pure,
Is the perfect Child of Heaven;
O how lovely, o how pure,
Gracious gift of God to man!

Refrain

Jesus, Lord of all the world,
Coming as a Child among us,
Jesus, Lord of all the world,
Grant to us Thy heav'nly peace.

Refrain

Last year right after Christmas my wife and I were in Brussels. We stopped in at a beautiful medium-sized Gothic church for part of an evening mass, and they sang this song. I knew parts of it from an old Christmas record and was able to sing along. Won't forget that one anytime soon. C'est le chanson tres bon!

Little seems to be known about this carol; the best note I found is in Hymns and Carols of Christmas.

"The tune for this carol can be found in R. Grosjean's "Airs des noêl lorrain" (1862), where it is called 'Ancien air de chasse' [old hunting song], and it is indeed the case that an old Normandy hunting tune 'Tête bizarde', although in 6/8, is melodically very similar. The "Shorter New Oxford Book of Carols" editors postulated that the tune is an 18th c. composition in a rustic style.
The text of this carol was first published in Dom G. Legeay's "Noêls anciens" (1875-6)." "An English version of the lyric .... Geoffrey Brace's "Carol for Christmas Singers, Cambridge Univ. Press, 1991, ..."
http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols_/NonEnglish/il_est_ne.htm
Masato (above) links translations in Hymns and Carols .... The Wilcocks-John Rutter arrangement is commonly used by choirs.

On the St. Regis Mohawk Reserve, NY, the carol is sung as "Rotonni Niio Roienha" (19th c. introduction?).

well, im singing with my chorus at the candlelight at epcot. We learned the english part like this:

Now is born the divine christ child
play the mussette play the oboe
now is born the divine christ child,
let us rejoice this day

of course, with all the alto's, soprano's, tenor's and base's all singing together, it sounds absolutely wonderful. :)

When I was an Alter boy many many years ago this was a favorite of mind just before mid-night mass. As it was an Acadian village just outside Halifax Nova Scotia most of the hymns at Christmas were sung in French. Still my favorite.

From: Jim Dixon

Here's the oldest version I can find with Google Books. It has more verses than other versions posted here, and some other differences.

From Nouveau recueil de cantiques spirituels: 1e et 2e partie (Amiens: Caron-Vitet, 1819), page

CLXXXIX.
Air: Il est né cet Enfant royal.

[CHORUS] Il est né le divin Enfant!
Jouez, hautbois; raisonnez, musettes;
Il est né le divin Enfant,
Chantons tous son avènement.

1. Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
L'avoient promis plusieurs prophètes;
Depuis plus de quatre mille ans,
Nous attendions cet heureux temps.

2. Ah, qu'il est beau, qu'il est charmant!
Ah, que ses grâces sont parfaites!
Ah, qu'il est beau, qu'il est charmant!
Qu'il est doux ce Jésus enfant.

3. Une étable est son logement;
Un peu de paille est sa couchette;
Une étable est son logement;
Pour un Dieu, quel abaissement.

4. Il veut nos cœurs, il les attend,
Il naît pour faire leur conquête;
ll veut nos cœurs, il les attend,
Donnons-les lui donc promptement.

5. Partez, grands Rois de l'Orient,
Venez vous unir à nos fêtes;
Partez, grands Rois de l'Orient,
Venez adorer cet enfant.

6. Hérode cherche l'innocent
Dans le sang des plus jeunes têtes;
Hérode cherche l'innocent:
O Mère, fuyez le tyran.

7. Jésus, ô Roi tout puissant,
Tout petit enfant que vous êtes;
O Jésus, ô Roi tout puissant!
Régnez sur nous entièrement.

8. Vous grandirez avec les ans;
Donnez-nous les vertus parfaites;
Vous grandirez avec les ans:
Nous voulons cesser d'être enfans.

In this book, "raisonnez" has been misspelled, it should be "résonnez".
"Raisonner" (pronounced with an open-mid sound like in "bed") means "to reason" while "résonner" (pronounced with a close-mid sound like in "bury") means "resound". But... in many areas, they're both pronounced with a close-mid sound, hence the misspelling.

Monique might explain this better, being a native French speaker, but I was also taught it as Tradsinger has explained.
Normally a word like DIVIN would be pronounced (nearest English equivalent) DEEVUN - not reaaly enunciating the N but VUN being a nasal sound.
But, because the next word, Enfant, starts with an E, it becomes DEEVEEN.
Happens particularly in songs. Any clearer than boue now?

Normally before a word beginning with a vowel, a nasalized vowel at the end of a word loses its nasalization and the final "n" is pronounced as if it were the 1st letter of the next word.
"Divin enfant" pronounced "divi-nenfant" is the only case in which the "i" from "-vin" recovers its original sound -the 4 other existing cases (Achille, Homère, Ulysse, amour) are seldom used if at all and derive from this one. There's no grammatical/phonetical explanation. It's just been spread this way from the beginning. It was published in 1874 for the first time. Here is the original score with no lyrics (#8 at the bottom of the page).
