Subject: BBC on the Incredible String Band From: Jack Campin Date: 05 Apr 17 - 01:35 PM Never really my thing but they were okay at the time if you were on enough drugs: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-39304909 |
Subject: RE: BBC on the Incredible String Band From: DaveRo Date: 05 Apr 17 - 02:24 PM I read a review if this jointly-written memoir: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/mar/25/you-know-what-you-could-be-by-mike-heron-and-andrew-greig-review Joe Boyd's book White Bicycles has an interesting account of ISB, including their disastrous Woodstock appearance, and the Scientology episode. Subject: RE: BBC on the Incredible String Band From: Kampervan Date: 06 Apr 17 - 02:28 AM I loved their music from the day I bought their first LP. Then 5000 Spirits came out and totally blew me away. It was genius but with an obviously very wry sense of humour. Still love listening to their music. |

Subject: RE: BBC on the Incredible String Band From: GUEST,LynnH Date: 06 Apr 17 - 03:59 AM Sounds as if the book could be an interesting read. And then there's the BBC(?) documentary lurking on YouTube. |
Subject: RE: BBC on the Incredible String Band From: GUEST,David Nuttall, Wakefield Date: 06 Apr 17 - 04:18 AM I was never into any drugs of any sort but I always loved The Incredible String Band's really unique and atmospheric sound and images which their music evoked. Today....some 50 years on...their sound still brings back memories of college, music and good friends ( SOME of whom DID partake in the drugs scene) . David |

The tune for 'Eternal Circle' has so etched itself into my brain that I use it for a version of 'Alison Gross' which has 8-line verses rather than the more common 4-line. It's so wonderfully eerie! Subject: RE: BBC on the Incredible String Band From: GUEST,matt milton Date: 07 Apr 17 - 04:37 AM I've read the book. I thoroughly recommend it, for Mike Heron's part of the book. It is perhaps THE most evocative account of coming-of-age in the 1960s I've ever read. It's a real shame it's so short. Andrew Grieg's part makes up most of the book, and while it's readable and interesting, it's a bit pretentious: he tries to be clever too much. |
