Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Drunk Up the Cider From: Phot Date: 17 Aug 09 - 01:56 PM No decent pubs in Ilchester anymore! These days Yeovilton is full of angry egg whisks, and a couple of token Hawks. I think the pub in Taunton which held the folk club is the Weastgate, at the top of Compass hill, and I think it is still going. Wassail! Chris Ex 899 and 800 Sqn, and the Phot section. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: bubblyrat Date: 13 Apr 07 - 08:47 AM There used to be a good folk-club in Taunton,in a pub . I can"t remember the name of the pub, but I DO recall going there to see a "bluegrass" -style group called " Country Strings ", in about 1965, and very good they were too ! ( Well, I thought so !)--Anyone else heard of them ?? And, to stay 'on thread' --We all drank CIDER, but didn"t sing THAT song !! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: BB Date: 13 Apr 07 - 04:12 AM Memories of Bath '67-'70, when scrump was 9d a pint in the Beehive - and for that matter, in the Student Union bar! I'm afraid two was about my limit, and, when I found it down in Deb'n, I preferred Taunton Cider's Natural Dry, known locally as Natch. Seemed to be just as strong, but rather more mellow - and I don't mean sweet. Unfortunately, Taunton Cider Co. is no more, and the company that took it over marketed Natural Dry as Natch, but have changed the apples and many cider fans drink it no more. Thatcher's isn't bad, though. Barbara |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: MuddleC Date: 12 Apr 07 - 03:53 PM There was a farm along the Ashill straight that did 'praper' scrumpy. I have writted these worms down and will sing 'Drink up thee cider' for the benefit of these ere folk in the parched deserts of Derbyshire |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: MuddleC Date: 12 Apr 07 - 03:45 PM I hail from Taunton so Yeovilton was a must for airdays! HMS Fisgard, then Daedalus, and so Heron on Lynx 700L 702 Sqdns, Wessex 5 707 848 Sqdns, Air Radio Workshops. Then RNAS Culdrose with Sea Kings ASW.. I be a-learnin' musik, muddling the art of whistle-blowing... (I normally singe unaccomplished) |

Cheers , Roger... PS is "Muddle C" a Glaswegian musical expression ?? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: MuddleC Date: 12 Apr 07 - 03:13 PM .... years later when I was at Yeovilton 81-82, it was a cider 'desert', keg and lager , but decent beer was to be found at the Phelps Arms Montacute.... now a restaurant.. ex pinky tiff |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: bubblyrat Date: 12 Apr 07 - 06:34 AM A cider reminiscence---- When I was based at RNAS Yeovilton ( HMS Heron ) in 1964-66, a pint of local scrumpy could be had of the landlord of the Duke of Clarence, next to the Gaumont cinema in Yeovil, for tenpence ha'penny ( about 4 p ! ) . We would go , more often ,to the Dolphin in Ilchester, as it was within walking distance ( at least, on the outward journey ! ) There, it was a shilling ( 5p) a pint, and still virtually undrinkable unless you had " tops " on it---(-usually orange, but some had lemon ). You wouldn"t really want more than 4 or 5 pints , so you could have a good night out on ten shillings ( 50 p ! ) ---4 pints of scrumpy, ten cigarettes ( no. 6 or no. 10 )and some chips from the chip-shop on the way back "home". Before going on Easter or Summer leave, which was always by train,we would collect all the empty vinegar-bottles from the "galley", and take them to a farm behind the airfield, at Chilton Cantello, where scrumpy was five shillings ( 25 p !! ) a GALLON !! And , yes, it DID have lumps in it ! We would then be " bussed" to Templecombe, which was very strange indeed, as Yeovil had THREE stations ,where we would all ( several hundred ) board the train / trains , in which were already ensconced the entire female garrison of the WRAC Driver Training Centre at Houndstone Camp, Yeovil. By about Westbury /Reading, there were some VERY interesting cider-fuelled " situations " developing !! To paraphrase the late, great,Adge Cutler, "There"s nothing like good cider, to make thee legs grow wider, and there"s still more cider in the West !" |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: Micca Date: 15 Dec 99 - 09:48 PM Hey Gint do you know Gibbon Strangler? On the day on which my doctor told me I am diabetic, the almost only bright spot was his advice to stick to dry cider as it is almost residual sugar free and gets you pissed cheaper. Do you go to Hastings for the Mayday weekend?, if yes take a look at the picture page and you can see what I do there. the pubs in the Old Town ie the FILO has Proper cider. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: Gint Date: 15 Dec 99 - 07:37 PM Micca, someone who drinks Biddendens (Weald time warp) I reacently met Thatchers, not the supermarket stuff, you get two flavours red or green, both have a sort of luninessence served up as Chernobyl or Sellerfield £1.50 per pint... quality stuff but it does answer why west country people speak with a slow drawl and lose some of their words ie; Where are you now where you to Where is the package comming from Where's it to and many more |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: Ted from Australia Date: 15 Dec 99 - 05:35 AM Last line of 2nd chorus There's nowt like good old cider to male the arsehole wider. and there's--- etc I think that SeanM's version is the politically corrected one. Regards Ted |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: Roger the skiffler Date: 15 Dec 99 - 04:24 AM I think other versions have "knocked the milkchurns over" and even "knocked the milkmaids over" (which makes rolling them in the clover more interesting!),but it may be my tinnitus interefering with my comprehension! RtS( who has painful memories of being very>ill after a night on rough cider as a callow youth, but who still enjoys a glass or three of the dry still varieties) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: SeanM Date: 14 Dec 99 - 05:54 PM Folk variations... we sing a fairly clean version. I've since found one or two amusingly filthy versions. Also seen "So let's all have another round" for the last line of the chorus, and a lot of others, basically all stating either "I'm drunk", or "give me more booze"... Ah, the life of the non-PC... M |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: Liz the Squeak Date: 14 Dec 99 - 05:48 PM The chorus actually ends 'for the corn's half cut and so be we.... which makes slightly more sense, plus a nice play on worms.... LTS, who was brought up on cider and loathes this song because my mother played it every sodding day, thank you Adge Cutler!!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: SeanM Date: 14 Dec 99 - 03:54 PM Almost right. There're a couple missing breaks around the chorus (of which there's only one chorus, repeated), but I hope that helps. M |
Subject: Lyr Add: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: SeanM Date: 14 Dec 99 - 03:49 PM Hi Bill... I'm with a group that does this song (or at least a song by that title)... hope this is what you're looking for.
Drink up the Cider Hope this helps... M |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: Micca Date: 14 Dec 99 - 01:54 PM Try it after 4 or 5 pints of some good stuff like Biddenden or( I kid you not) Gibbon Strangler,if you can stand to sing, No Problem, the words will even make sense. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: DRINK UP THE CIDER From: Roger the skiffler Date: 14 Dec 99 - 10:39 AM Thread creep warning: The UK papers say that there is a big sales drive by Bulmers to sell cider to China so perhaps the autotranslator should be working overtime! RtS |
