On Monday 8th the Colindale Folk Club will start the New Year with Daria Kulesh and Jonny Dyer. We have had both members of this new combination perform here before; Daria sang solo last January and Jonny has headlined twice before with his regular musical partner Vicki Swan.

"Daria's 'truly extraordinary voice' and rich stories told in song, combined with Jonny's spectacular instrumental skills and composing/arranging talent. A match made in musical heaven."

I look forward to discovering how these two talents will merge together.

We will have floor spots as per usual starting at 8:30, get in touch if you want to take part.

Lea Nicholson and Naomi Randall at the Colindale Folk Club - Monday 12th February

"Lea Nicholson & Naomi Randall play acoustic and electric odd folk, originals and covers to the light of the silvery moon. An array of instruments and vocal harmonies that will knock your socks off."
http://www.nicholsonrandall.co.uk

I first saw them play at the Slaughtered Lamb in Clerkenwell last October. They introduced one of their songs "The Rest of the Day's Your Own" with the words "We have promised ourselves that if we ever get this song right, we will stop playing it." I hope that they have not got it right yet as it was very enjoyable.

We will have two talented newcomers doing floor spots starting at 8:30. Free entry, good food, friendly pub.

Some European Folk Before Brexit

Na-Mara are Hertfordshire-based duo, formed in 2006, comprising Rob Garcia, (guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin & backing vocals), born in London of Spanish descent, his father being a child refugee from the 1937 Guernica bombing, and Paul McNamara, (vocals, guitars) born in Middlesbrough, writer of all the original lyrics on their last album. Performing English translations of songs from Breton, French and Quebecois traditions; and their take on traditional tunes from Brittany, France and the Spanish Celtic regions of Asturias and Galicia.
http://www.na-mara.com

“One of life's certainties, thus far, is that any music produced by Na-Mara, be it live or recorded, will be of the highest quality and guaranteed to involve subjects and themes of compelling interest. Their latest recorded release, Sisters & Brothers, does nothing to contradict that assertion, indeed it would be fair to say that this offering reaffirms their status as one of the most talented duos around……By any standards, Na-Mara are one of the outstanding duos on the contemporary music scene…” David Pratt, FATEA, 13th April 2019

Vincent Cross at the Colindale Folk Club Monday 8th July, at the Chandos Arms, 31 Colindale Avenue, Colindale, NW9 5DS.

Vincent is on a summer tour of European folk clubs.
http://www.vincentcross.com

"Vincent Cross' new song cycle brings together early Irish-American ballads, and old-time mountain banjo with recently composed and discovered traditional songs around and about the infamous 19th century, Irish-American gang leader James 'The Rooster' Corcoran. Corcoran was known for his 'caustic tongue and ready wit', he was often stereotyped tabloid fodder for the newspapers of the 1800s. Many of the songs were written using historical documents as primary sources, and structured to resemble broadside ballads of the era. If you've ever seen the movie Gangs of New York, then this would be a musical accompaniment to the rogues, pimps, murders and thieves that inhabited New York City in the 19th century."

There is one floor spot up for grabs, we start at 8:30 sharp. Free entry, good food and a friendly pub that has been a finalist for the Best Live Entertainment Pub of 2018, as well as a finalist for Best Community Pub in the Star Pubs & Bars Awards, 2018.

SteveWarnerFolk is a singer songwriter from the leafy village of Kimpton, Hertfordshire, whose songs include subjects as diverse as the demise of the Luton Car industry, the trenches of the WW1, the Glencoe Massacre and the current addiction of all things technological. He played a floor spot at our folk club back in February that impressed me enough for this headline gig.

Fraser Nimmo at the Colindale Folk Club, Monday 21st October
Please note THIRD Monday of the month!

"Fraser Nimmo is a Scottish singer, songwriter and actor who combines traditional songs with his own material in an organic melange of Celtic musicality. His songs cover the whole gamut of human experience and are delivered with flair, wit, compassion and serious digital dexterity on guitar and banjo." - http://www.frasernimmo.co.uk

"Fraser Nimmo's self-effacing humour and presentation belie a serious songwriter who delights in both aspects of his craft" - Ralph McTell

“Fraser Nimmo was a super opening act on one of our lengthy winter UK tours. Right from his opening song he had the audience in the palm of his hand and joining in on the choruses in true folk tradition. Lovely songs and banter and nice guitar playing too. If you get the chance to see him do.” - Dave Pegg, Fairport Convention

Just to reiterate, we are switching from our usual second Monday of the month to the third Monday (21st) to fit in with Fraser's schedule.

We will have a special guest amongst the floor spots, with one floor spot still available. We start at 8:30 sharp, there is free entry, good food and a friendly pub that won the Best Local in the Great British Pub Awards 2019.

The re-opening of the Colindale Folk Club in August was a great success. I am delighted to welcome back Jonny Dyer and Vicki Swan who are fantastic multi-instrumentalists. Their songs are great and played with skill and humour. This is their fourth appearance at the folk club which shows how highly I rate them. Watch out for the nyckelharpa and a possible cow horn. http://www.swan-dyer.co.uk

There will be four talented floor spots starting at 8:30 p.m.
If you wish to play a floor spot at a future folk night, please see me, your compère Mark, before we start at 8:30 p.m. or send me an email.

Anna Tam at the Colindale Folk Club Monday 13th Dec.

In this season of Advent, we welcome back to her regular carol singing slot, Anna Tam who "...gives traditional British songs her own loving personal twist. She sings with a clear bright voice and accompanies herself on a selection of traditional and historical string instruments including the nyckelharpa, viola da gamba, hurdy gurdy, cello and whatever else she can find. Her approach to the folk tradition is centred in the stories the songs tell and the people who lived them. Shortlisted as ‘Instrumentalist of the Year’ by Fatea Magazine in 2020 for her work with her group ‘Wilde Roses’..."

Masterclass in Song

Terry Hiscock is a singer/songwriter, he will be accompanied by Roger Trevitt on bass. They are one half of the folk/rock band Hunter Muskett that formed in 1968. He has a new album out that has these glowing reviews.

"'Falling More Slowly' is a masterclass in song-writing and performance from one of our most under-rated singer/songwriters. Here’s hoping that we don’t have to wait another 50 years for his next solo release." - Folk Radio UK

"'Falling More Slowly' is an album of gems to be treasured and confirms Terry Hiscock as one of the best singer/songwriters around. * * * * " - FATEA Magazine
