If there is no fringe where other musicians can play, it may be that they will listen to the main acts . However , I suspect they would just stay home instead of going to play , and then give a listen to main stage

I simply don't understand your reasoning. Or unpleasantness. Which aspect of musicians (and possibly other artists) attending a festival and doing their own thing when they're not actually at the organised bits, do you find so abhorrent? Most places that host festivals have - let's call them 'venues' - that are only too happy to host informal gatherings, or even engage professionals to encourage them. Severed head said "it really needed an informal singers and musicians session", and has pointed to a suitable venue. So where do you see a problem?
Nobody has suggested running an alternative event.
Even the street people that invariably accompany festivals add to the ambience and festive spirit (not sure about amplified pan-pipers!)

I hope you have a pleasant day elsewhere, and that no folk musicians turn up to spoil you enjoyment.

I did not accuse you or anyone else personally of being parasites - but if the cap fits!

You may well make a significant financial contribution to events you attend - but there an awful lot that don't.

At Barking, of course, it being free event even if you wanted to you could not.

I just think that you are being rude by suggesting to run something at odds with an event that someone has probably put a lot of time and effort into for no obvious gain.

And finally in answer to your point 4 - so p... off and do it somewhere else and I don't care if I am being rude.

I will just close by wishing the event the best of luck and saying I would love to be there but have a previous commitment.

1. Whatever faults London has, and they are many, it has a wonderful public transport system. You arrive at a bus stop, wait a bit, and a bus comes, maybe a bit less frequently in the wee small hours. Compared with buses 09.00 and 16.30 market days only!

2. I won't publicly hazard a guess at Leadfingers age; but I am certainly a wrinkly, of an age where it is also appropriate to be a grumpy old git. And I am not at all jealous (publicly that is) of his having a pass which works on trains as well as buses!

3. Perhaps you could justify your statement that in terms of folk festivals Leadfingers, Richard and myself, for example, are basically parasites.

4. "If the event was not there then neither would you be! " - true, but we could well be playing somewhere else.



I wonder how many performers at the "official" festival themselves play at fringe venues, or at least did before they had enough paid work?

Putting aside the pedantics regarding who does or does not "organise" the fringe it is at best opportunist and at worst parasitic.

Normally I would ask that people taking advantage of others efforts and risk taking would at least contribute financially. (LOL)

I thought the free travel only applied to the wrinklies and disadvantaged but no doubt Leadfingers can clarify this.

IMHO there is nothing jammy about living in London although it is usually an interesting place to visit.

Sorry Hootenanny; you're quite right it's not. Just rather close. At least I take it it's that Barking? And that Newham will remain short of culture.

And if you want to put it that way G_G_Guest, yes it is about MEE, doing something I love in the company of like minded friends. is that so bad? And other than that they listen, whereas we play, are not audiences doing that same thing?
As regards festivals, consider the process of condensation in clouds; given a suitable nucleus, water vapour condenses, and ultimately produces refreshing (or at least usually necessary) rain. The festival is a nucleus, musicians collect around it, and the community is (we hope) refreshed '(take tongue out of cheek)'!

The fringe doesn't happen because someone organises it; if it did it wouldn't be a 'fringe' but part of the festival. It happens because the festival is a good place to be, and there's a good pub nearby. Don't knock it.

I understand that Guff Productions, who will be running the BBC Folk Awards show in 2018, have allocated a number of empty rooms for "Fringe" events to take place while the show is running. It would appear the idea is to meet the requirements of the "Inclusivity Agenda", so sacred to "Auntie".

Years since I laid on events but I tried for the atmosphere of a fringe without any substantive festival.
Still, someone always would start something else so not to be a part of the 'official' programme.

Having said that; well done for bringing it to this area where nothing musical seems to happen. Have you put it in the Newham Magazine?
I find it strange that the "every child a musician" initiative seems left to wither on the vine as the kids grow up. The events section of that magazine doesn't even list the Newham Academy Orchestra.

To many of us, as Leadfingers has said, folk music is something we do, rather than what we just listen to - "Music in the Community".
Formal concerts provide a nucleus, and usually we do dip in and out, but several days of just listening to other people - no matter how skilled - doing it gets boring.
You might even consider that the point of a folk concert, from a musicians point of view, is to see what the "leaders in the field" are doing, and take it away with you as inspiration for your own playing.

Lots of people in other walks of life manage it eg Ladies who Lunch.

What is the attraction of doing something outwith of at an event?

Regarding the other guest; I assume from your posting you consider the standard in folk clubs to be poor!?

The trouble with events like these is that they can promote an interest in folk music among the "listening oiks" who then expect decent performances in return of their money in folk clubs.

The Rom Shanty Crew sang at last year's Barking Folk Festival, and we felt it really needed an informal singers and musicians session away from the main arena.
On Saturday 10th June 2017, we are inviting all singers and musicians to join us at The Boathouse Cafe & Bar, 80 Abbey Road, Barking, IG11 7BT. It is a lovely venue with a terrace overlooking Barking Creek, and about 10 minutes walk from the Festival site. We will be there from 12 Noon onwards, and finish time will depend on how many people turn up to support the event. It would be great if we could keep it going throughout the afternoon, until perhaps 5pm or 6pm.
We are circulating flyers to local folk clubs and if you could tell your friends about it, that would be great!

Hi guys, I just wanted to draw your attention to the Barking Folk Festival that is happening on Sat 10th - Sun 11th June this year.

The highlight of the event is Abbey Ruins Live, where a number of folk acts will be performing over the weekend. The current running order looks like this:

Saturday 10 June

4pm – Kitty Macfarlane
4.45pm – Lucy Ward
5.30pm – Blair Dunlop
6.30pm – Damien O'Kane
8pm – Kate Rusby

Sunday 11 June

4pm – The Leylines
4.45pm – Beans on Toast
5.30pm – Lucy Spraggan
6.30pm – The Young'uns
8pm – Newton Faulkner

The best thing is that it's completely FREE, although you do still need to book a ticket online. All the information about the event is here.
