My operating system is Linux and I probably have a more limited palette of video editing software than Mac or Windows. The one I have settled on is called OpenShot. As is common in Linux this is free, and I think open source, software and is available for the other operating systems. I'm not aware of size ever being an issue. I transfer the file from my camera to the computer and into the editor and it all seems to work without fuss.

I have used VideoRedo. Its full-featured free trial lasts 30 days. It is one of the few apps. that I have ever thought of buying. Look out for Tall Ship Cronicles on YouTube. That was originally one of my uploads from a set of NTSC VHS tapes, digitised to DVDs, then edited with Video Redo to remove gaps, ads., artefects, interference, etc., etc. Although the files got copied numerous times and my original work was forgotten.

Just a thought (I use a Mac, not Windows): When you open up the movie, do you have size options to pick from? The Mac utility iMovie allows you to edit at full size - but then you have a choice of sizes and resolutions in which to save the finished product. Suitable for smartphone, internet, full-size, etc.

Perhaps Movie Maker has a default which needs to be over-ridden.

I've edited a video of the band using Windows Movie Maker, but there's a thick black band around it so the video is very small and difficult to see. Any advice on improving it? Or can you recommend better free software?
