Version sung by Ricky Koole:

THE ROAD I TOOK TO YOU

Bread and Water
Like some poor man's daughter
No never for me
Wine and Money called me honey
and made me feel I was real

Like a glass raised too many times
I broke in two.

I was walking around in pieces
and I never even knew that the way back home to me
was the road I took to you.

Winter saw me down and dragging my feet
through the snow
Drinking feeling like I was living on the street
with no place to go.

And cracked in the cod (I can guarantee this is incorrect)
I felt the cold come through.

I was walking around in pieces
and I never even knew that the way back home to me
was the road I took to you.

And now somehow I've ended up with a cup so full.
It's overflowing all the time I know that there is nothing i can hold in my hand.

And it feels so good to me
Just being true
I was walking around in pieces
and I never even knew that the way back home to me
was the road I took to you.
that the way back home to me
was the road I took to you.

Written by Barbara Keith -From the Best of Meg Christian CD. This song was orginally done on Face The Music album with supporting vocals of Sweet Honey in the Rock. My first (original) upload and is dedicated to the women who paved the way.
MEG Christian SINGING IS WHAT COUNTS. I will add the following message which Meg put on the album information for this song: After too many frightened, confused years of thinking I was the ONLY one, it was nothing short of a life-saving experience for me to find the support of the women's movement. That was in 1969. Sometimes now when the work seems too hard or the differences among us seem too great, this song puts me back in touch with the incredible bonds I discovered at the beginning, when I found my real home in the community of woman-identified women.

*Lyrics from album liner (see note at bottom): (Actual lyrics Meg sang here)

THE ROAD I TOOK BACK HOME TO YOU
(Barbara Keith)

Bread and water, like some poor man's daughter
No, never for me
Wine and money called me honey
Made me feel I was free (and made me feel I was ripped)
Like a glass raised too many times
I broke in two

Chorus:
I was walking around in pieces (I was walking around in little pieces)
And I never even knew
That the way back home to me
Was the road I took to you

Winter saw me down and dragging my feet
Through the snow
Drinking, feeling like I was living on the street
With nowhere to go (With no place to go)
And cracked in the coat I wore (And cracked in the cold I was)
I felt the cold come through

Chorus:

I was walking around in pieces (I was walking around in little pieces)
And I never even knew
That the way back home to me
Was the road I took to you

And now somehow I've ended up with a cup (Now and now I've ended up with a cup)
So full and (So full)
Overflowing, all the time I know that it is (That overflowing, all the time I know that it is)
Nothing I can hold in my hand (Nothing, nothing holding my hand)
And it feels so good to me
Just being true (Being here with you)

Chorus:
I was walking around in pieces (I was walking around in little pieces)
And I never even knew
That the way back home to me
Was the road I took to you (Was the road I took to you, I took to you)

That the way back home to me
Was the road I took to you

*Lyrics- I adapted my version from Barbara Keith's (hers being the one we were legally required to print). So you'll notice a lyric change here and there. This was printed on the record cover and were words by Meg Christian at that time.
