Hi, Keberoxu - I don't agree with your posting a "this opinion" link without saying something about it yourself and giving at least a short summary of what's in the link.

Your link is to a 4June2018 CNN article by Shan Wu titled Why I Am Forgiving John McCain.

Wu's article discusses McCain's reference in 2000 to his North Vietnamese captors as "gooks." McCain has been a U.S. Senator from Arizona since 1987, when he succeeded Barry Goldwater. He should have known better in 2000, but it's clear that he didn't.

There are many things I hated about my experience in the U.S. Army 1970-73, despite the fact that my work as a German linguist was good overall. But I really hated the racism, and racism seemed to be an integral part of running the U.S. Army. Even though African-Americans were generally well-accepted in leadership positions in the Army, racism and hatred were still an integral part of enforcing opposition to the Enemy. "Gook" was a very common word in the U.S. Army in the early 1970s, as I'm sure it was in McCain's Navy. I thought it was a hateful word. I dared to speak out about some things in the military and suffered for it, but I don't know specifically what racist words I addressed - there were many of them, and they were not discouraged in any way. But "gook" was one of those commonly-used words I hated.

I don't know when McCain learned compassion, but it's clear that he has become a thoughtful and compassionate man in recent years - despite remaining a political conservative. I don't think he'd use the term "gook" nowadays. So, yeah, I'd forgive him for past offenses. In the last couple years, he's been one of the few Republicans to stand up strong against the racism of Donald Trump.

-Joe-

My feelings are mixed about the public stuff about the Senator presently.

There is a book newly off the presses,
and now, in order to send him off,
there is an HBO documentary which takes its title
from Ernest Hemingway, of all people.

Someone at the Washington Post, I forget who,
raised their voice to ask,
Why does the HBO feature not refer to President Trump?

There are Republicans who for all intents and purposes recused themselves. I'm not sure if they will get their party back or constitute a new party.

There are some ridiculous extremes among the Dems but these appear to be tendentious for the time being, attempting to embed themselves into the party and poisoning the Dems in the eyes of many middle of the roaders who may have felt forced to the Trumpists.

I'm not ready to give up on the Republicans. There are still lots of good leaders in the Republican Party, and they provide a necessary balance against the tendency of the Democrats (including myself) to become unrealistically ideological. The really good ones are getting old and retiring, like McCain and Hatch. But there are a few good ones who are younger. Lindsey Graham is the first who comes to mind, but there are others.

Let's try that again, since my phone "corrected" the word thwart

Greg, if the Democrats in both houses build alliances with only a tiny minority of Republicans, they can do a great deal to thwart Trump and his agenda - although probably not the 2/3 needed to override a veto. There are lots of nevertrump members in both houses.
Murkowski (Alaska), Collins (Maine), and McCain (Arizona) saved Obamacare. All three are likely to side with the Democrats on many crucial issues, and there are many Republicans who take a far more generous view of immigrants, than Trump does.

Joe, as evidenced over and over again by the course of history since the election of Pres. Obama and the performance of all but a tiny minority of Republican lawmakers this is a contradiction in terms if not an outright impossibility.

The only way the U.S. is going to survive a Trump presidency, is with a few Republican votes. To my mind, the single most serious issue in the United States, is immigration. If we can't forge a reasonable compromise with the Republicans, millions of people are likely to be deported from their homes. This really is a serious crisis, and it may peak this week. Although he does have his faults, Senator McCain is the leader of the "Loyal Opposition," within the Republican Party, and we need him very much this week. There are many Republicans who have compassion for the immigrants who have been part of this country for so long. We need all of their votes this week, to vote down the forces of anti-immigrant hatred.

Meghan McCain, the Senator's daughter, has made comments to the press (CNN) in the absence of further statements from his office.

"He had pneumonia," she disclosed about his treatment at Walter Reed in Bethesda in December. At the time the reports spoke of a viral infection, suggesting a compromised immune system; but this is the first I remember hearing the word pneumonia.

It is probably well for him that he did not participate in that tax bill vote, if he was that ill at the time.

That's Entertainment - or is it?

A clown with his pants falling down
Or the chief who tweets for relief
Or the show where the fired would go
That's entertainment!
The lights on the wife in tights
Or the bribe that the White House hides
Or the war that the Navy ignores
That's entertainment!
The plot can be hot, grabbing for sex
A President who is suing his ex
It could be Narcissus Rex
Trump picks a Nazi and envies Bill Cosby
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage; the stage is a world of entertainment!
It might be a fight like you see on the screen
A wussy grabs pussy then insults the queen
Some great Shakespearean scene
Where everyone cries over incredible lies
Hip hip hooray! Its the American way
The world is a stage; the stage is a world of entertainment!

Our very own Janie is far too ethical to diagnose by hearsay.

There is a rule by the APA American psychiatric association called the Goldwater rule to prevent making professional diagnosis of Presidential candidates. It goes back to Barry Goldwater.

However scores of psychiatrists have broken that rule and are on record with the NYT that Donald J Trump is
;^?

sic. looser with the truth than a goose, nuttier than squirrel poop, history adverse and fact perverse, an irrational international, is a Cosby apologist - out of envy, has a liquid gold fetish, Has a sense of grandeur that his breasts are bigger than his wife, is a maniac narcissistic Narcissus, has rats in the attic and bats in the Mara Lago belfry, a cheating cowardly bully, doesn't take 'know' for an answer but is a name caller extraordinaire (for a fifth grader)

To hold a serious job like a CEO that has a board, he would be immediately dismissed.
But the Presidency is apparently a different matter. It is said e doesn't know better. Forgive him Lord for he does not know what he does unless he personally profits.

Meanwhile, back to the topic of the OP.

I don't ever diagnosis some one I have not done a face-to-face evaluation of, but it does appear that McCain was confused and possibly exhibiting some cognitive impairment. I am not a McCain fan, but he is one of the few Senators still in office who does occasionally stand up for the country instead of his party - not nearly often enough, but more so than any of the younger Senators, whether from the GOP or the Democrats.

Unfortunately, in this instance, he not only appeared confused, but was also attempting to play politics rather than engaging in statesmanship.

Our federal government lacks any statesmen/women at all at present.

There are many people even here who assume they should be the arbiter of our thoughts, actions, responses, even thread titles that are obscure enough to inspire curiosity. I am guilty of this to a degree when I criticize something.
It is impossible to agree on everything so it is a given disagreements abound.

In the wisdom of Sum Por Sol it is said "Can't we all get along"?

Hell no.

That's what diplomacy, manners, etiquette and a modicum of decency is for. With free speech everything is game, even decency. Brits know this better than Americans.
Or we can believe in the delusion a civil war will solve anything.

So long Sen. McCain is an entirely appropriate title. He is not running for re-election.

Not about McCain - yes we can Goggle but I don't. I (Yapoo because I am an anarchist)

But I get e-mails on my chosen subject, folk events. The informants do the same, tell me there is an event and expect me to open an .emz file fer gawds sake. All it takes is short text and we have a handle, in my case "date, type and who".

Goggle is wide and very selective from your history of searches and delivers a different set of results for any one person. viz one free-wheeling person searching Egypt gets holidays another might get all political stories. Goggle is biased. To YOU!

It is all about communication, folks. Giz a clue.

One of the things about why Mudcat isn't worth it is that people get in really stupid fights that interrupt threads. Another is when people don't know what's going on, and instead of simply asking, they lash out at people. As in Joe, with his "you wonks". As in accusing somebody of slander.
