Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Dec 17 - 09:10 AM I changed the thread name since it seems overly flippant considering the grim prognosis he faces. Keberoxu, that site barely classifies as a blog. One wonders how you even found it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: keberoxu Date: 11 Feb 18 - 01:05 PM Meghan McCain, the Senator's daughter, has made comments to the press (CNN) in the absence of further statements from his office. "He had pneumonia," she disclosed about his treatment at Walter Reed in Bethesda in December. At the time the reports spoke of a viral infection, suggesting a compromised immune system; but this is the first I remember hearing the word pneumonia. It is probably well for him that he did not participate in that tax bill vote, if he was that ill at the time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Greg F. Date: 12 Feb 18 - 10:03 AM Easy, Joe - lets not canonize Sen. McNasty simply because the man may now be the best of a bad lot. He's done some genuinely miserable things in his career. Sources on request. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Jeri Date: 12 Feb 18 - 10:34 AM He's done a few good things. He's done a lot of things I don't like. In a time of sycophant, suck-up Republicans, I think he, at least, has a moral compass. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Greg F. Date: 12 Feb 18 - 11:13 AM I'm not arguing your point, Jeri. He has, at least, somewhat more of a moral compass (at times) the the current majority of his party. And I certainly wouldn't wish his health problems on my worst enemy. well, maybe Prez. Shithole...... |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Feb 18 - 01:22 PM The only way the U.S. is going to survive a Trump presidency, is with a few Republican votes. To my mind, the single most serious issue in the United States, is immigration. If we can't forge a reasonable compromise with the Republicans, millions of people are likely to be deported from their homes. This really is a serious crisis, and it may peak this week. Although he does have his faults, Senator McCain is the leader of the "Loyal Opposition," within the Republican Party, and we need him very much this week. There are many Republicans who have compassion for the immigrants who have been part of this country for so long. We need all of their votes this week, to vote down the forces of anti-immigrant hatred. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Greg F. Date: 12 Feb 18 - 01:34 PM a reasonable compromise with the Republicans Joe, as evidenced over and over again by the course of history since the election of Pres. Obama and the performance of all but a tiny minority of Republican lawmakers this is a contradiction in terms if not an outright impossibility. Apparently you've forgotten that history. Or choose to ignore it in hopes of some pollyanna/kumbaya fantasy. Wake up. Get real. RESIST!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Feb 18 - 11:02 PM Greg, if the Democrats in both houses build alliances with only a tiny minority of Republicans, they can do a great deal to that Trump and his agenda. There are lots of nevertrump members in both houses. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Feb 18 - 02:29 AM Let's try that again, since my phone "corrected" the word thwart Greg, if the Democrats in both houses build alliances with only a tiny minority of Republicans, they can do a great deal to thwart Trump and his agenda - although probably not the 2/3 needed to override a veto. There are lots of nevertrump members in both houses. Murkowski (Alaska), Collins (Maine), and McCain (Arizona) saved Obamacare. All three are likely to side with the Democrats on many crucial issues, and there are many Republicans who take a far more generous view of immigrants, than Trump does. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: keberoxu Date: 09 Mar 18 - 03:11 PM In the meanwhile, McCain had his own opinion of the trump tariffs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Mar 18 - 08:19 PM I'm not ready to give up on the Republicans. There are still lots of good leaders in the Republican Party, and they provide a necessary balance against the tendency of the Democrats (including myself) to become unrealistically ideological. The really good ones are getting old and retiring, like McCain and Hatch. But there are a few good ones who are younger. Lindsey Graham is the first who comes to mind, but there are others. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: robomatic Date: 09 Mar 18 - 11:34 PM There are Republicans who for all intents and purposes recused themselves. I'm not sure if they will get their party back or constitute a new party. There are some ridiculous extremes among the Dems but these appear to be tendentious for the time being, attempting to embed themselves into the party and poisoning the Dems in the eyes of many middle of the roaders who may have felt forced to the Trumpists. |

Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: keberoxu Date: 03 Jun 18 - 03:39 PM My feelings are mixed about the public stuff about the Senator presently. There is a book newly off the presses, and now, in order to send him off, there is an HBO documentary which takes its title from Ernest Hemingway, of all people. Someone at the Washington Post, I forget who, raised their voice to ask, Why does the HBO feature not refer to President Trump? |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Jun 18 - 06:52 PM Kelly Sadler, the Trump aid with a smart-ass remark about McCain dying anyway - is out on her keister today. Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: keberoxu Date: 06 Jun 18 - 09:28 PM What is your opinion of this opinion? |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Jun 18 - 10:32 PM Hi, Keberoxu - I don't agree with your posting a "this opinion" link without saying something about it yourself and giving at least a short summary of what's in the link. Your link is to a 4June2018 CNN article by Shan Wu titled Why I Am Forgiving John McCain. Wu's article discusses McCain's reference in 2000 to his North Vietnamese captors as "gooks." McCain has been a U.S. Senator from Arizona since 1987, when he succeeded Barry Goldwater. He should have known better in 2000, but it's clear that he didn't. There are many things I hated about my experience in the U.S. Army 1970-73, despite the fact that my work as a German linguist was good overall. But I really hated the racism, and racism seemed to be an integral part of running the U.S. Army. Even though African-Americans were generally well-accepted in leadership positions in the Army, racism and hatred were still an integral part of enforcing opposition to the Enemy. "Gook" was a very common word in the U.S. Army in the early 1970s, as I'm sure it was in McCain's Navy. I thought it was a hateful word. I dared to speak out about some things in the military and suffered for it, but I don't know specifically what racist words I addressed - there were many of them, and they were not discouraged in any way. But "gook" was one of those commonly-used words I hated. I don't know when McCain learned compassion, but it's clear that he has become a thoughtful and compassionate man in recent years - despite remaining a political conservative. I don't think he'd use the term "gook" nowadays. So, yeah, I'd forgive him for past offenses. In the last couple years, he's been one of the few Republicans to stand up strong against the racism of Donald Trump. -Joe- [Shan Wu is a former federal prosecutor who also served as counsel to Attorney General Janet Reno. He practices law in Washington, DC, where his recent representations include defending Rick Gates in the Russian probe.] |

Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: keberoxu Date: 29 Jul 18 - 02:34 PM There exists the remote possibility that Joe Arpaio (Republican) may fill the Arizona Senate vacancy. McCain and Arpaio together in the US Senate? Words fail me entirely. We'll know after the primary at the end of August. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Stilly River Sage Date: 29 Jul 18 - 09:55 PM Arpaio is as old as dirt. That would be ridiculous on so many levels, it's probably what will happen. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Jul 18 - 11:32 PM Joe Arpaio in the U.S. Senate? Isn't he supposed to be in prison? McCain was last re-elected in 2016, so his term doesn't end until 2023. Jeff Flake is up for re-election this year, 2018, and he decided not to run. I'm hoping somebody good is elected to replace Flake. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Stilly River Sage Date: 30 Jul 18 - 09:11 AM Trump "pardoned" him. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: keberoxu Date: 31 Jul 18 - 12:09 PM The idea of Arpaio and McCain being the two Arizona Senators in the U. S. Congress. The very idea . . . |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: keberoxu Date: 24 Aug 18 - 03:37 PM And while we wait for the Arizona primary elections next week, Senator McCain has been faced with the choice of continuing medical treatment for cancer -- and now it is reported that he has chosen to stop treatment. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 24 Aug 18 - 06:53 PM I know Joe Arpaio was pardoned - before he even got a chance to go to jail, I believe. Time Magazine says he's running a distant third in the race for the Arizona Republican nomination for Senator. The Arizona Primary is this coming Tuesday, August 28. Of the three candidates, Rep. Martha McSally doesn't sound bad - for a Republican. McCain certainly is no liberal, but he and Jeff Flake have certainly served well as thorns in Trump's side. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Rapparee Date: 24 Aug 18 - 09:01 PM I often disagree with McCain, but I respect him very, very much. |
Subject: RE: BS: Senator McCain From: Joe Offer Date: 25 Aug 18 - 09:05 PM Senator John McCain died today, August 25, 2018. May he rest in peace. If somebody would like to start an obituary thread, please do. I'm going to close this one, so things don't get confused. -Joe- |
