Hi, I couldn't find a thread on this, and I've tried the forums (fora?) and google and all... so, help me, rhonda, help help me rhonda, there, now it's musical.

In old Windows I could alter anything I wanted to on my display.

In W10 I cannot find a way to change the illegible font of my icons. Can it be done? Without learning programming?

Thanks!

Hi Mrrzy,

This might help:

URL deleted - by mudelf

If you read the blurb at the beginning it says that Microsoft likes screw1ng around with user knowledge by making what used to be simple, intuitive and easy into something totally befuddling and annoying. Well that's my take on it, anyway.

There are instructions on how to do it on that page.

I hope that helps.

URGENT. URGENT.

Hang on. Hold that thought! This might not be a good way to go.

Altering the registry can be RISKY.

If you don't know what you're doing, DON'T TOUCH THE REGISTRY. You can kill your computer.

What Acme said!

Sorry about my wrong-footed link. I didn't read all the info on that page before posting the link.

I assumed it was just a normal, where-to-find-the-place-to-change-the-font type of instruction, and not the kind where you open up the hood and take a sledgehammer to the engine.

That old saying: I was making an ASS out of U & ME

Sorry!

You can mess up your computer if you mess up typing the reg key, but it sounds like it's the only way to change the font style.

It might be better to just adapt to the new font.

What do you want to do, Mrrzy, change the size of the text under the icons - 'font-size' - which I think has been answered, or change the typeface - 'font-face' - like from Arial to Times Roman?

You can also change the screen resolution which makes everything bigger or smaller. I don't run my desktop screen at highest resolution - I can't read things.

Yes, you can screw up your computer if you mis-edit the registry, but you're very unlikely to if you follow instructions carefully. Windows is not that fragile. But it's quite likely that if you change the desktop font-face that way an update will just change it back.

Thank you so much, all, for the advice and for the protection against the advice!

Meanwhile, I don't want to change the *size* of everything, nor all the fonts, just the font of only the words under my icons, which has some kind of shadow effect I think I chose somewhere but which makes the word unreadable in that font now that I have a new background. Not that font size, that font.

And my new background is a basset hound on a beach, how relaxing is that. Do not wish to change that for a while.

I used to be able, under Personalize, to point to the thing that said something like Icons and you could adjust the font, and its size, and its distance from the icon, and the icon spacing, etc.

Is that just something nobody played with so they took it away? It was part of the fun of getting a new computer, which is why I think I might have chosen, somewhere somehow, the font that now I don't like and can't remember how I did it in the first place.

Thank you again! And thanks for the guardianship, elves!

You can still right-click an empty bit of desktop and select 'personalise'.

My copy of Windows 10 has 'drop shadows' on the icon text. I didn't change it.

Google for "Hide or Show Drop Shadow of Desktop Icon Labels in Windows 10"

Hi Mrrzy,

Don't call me Rhonda, eh? Oh well, at least I realised my mistake and admitted it publicly. That counts for something, I guess.

And thanks so much to the Mudelf who cleaned up after my mess.

My only excuse is that I had not had my morning caffeine fix before posting that link.

I know that with the Personalize option on Windows 7 I can choose to change the icon fonts etc but I stand by what I said in my first post: "Microsoft likes screw1ng around with user knowledge by making what used to be simple, intuitive and easy into something totally befuddling and annoying."

In an attempt to make amends, and trying desperately not to risk starting another bushfire, this page appears to - innocuously - show in step-by-step fashion with pictures, how to:

Hide or Show Drop Shadow of Desktop Icon Labels in Windows 10

I have found that the quickest way to find an answer to a Microsoft generated conundrum is to Google it instead of trying to decipher the in-built Help menu, which now goes to a webpage anyway.

When I first started using Microsoft, back in the dim distant dark ages, I found it difficult to use the Help menu because they used specific terminology for a process or function so I had to know what name they had allocated to the process before I could look it up in the Help list. Catch 22.

Then came the useful Help search or index function, but it more than likely would return a massively confusing amount of items with the one I was looking for hidden somewhere within the list. It often meant trawling through the list and opening them to see if they related to my problem.

Using a search engine like Google, with the capability of typing in a question - being specific, of course, e.g. "change icon text color in Windows 10" - can give you a number of dodgy sites but a couple of "bingo" moments which gives you the answer you were looking for in a clear, step-by-step process.

Navigating past the dodgy sites while making sure I had specified Windows 10 was my downfall in the first link I provided. I found a good clear set of instructions but then went back to Google to specify Windows 10 and then created the link and pasted and posted it before reading the page properly. Big no-no, but luckily the Mudelf ministering angel was hovering around ready to fix my error in a flash.

And as Guest 17 Jun 17 - 12:09 PM did supply a link to the answer, we should cut him/her some slack, I think. Thanks, Guest.

Helen

MS help will take you to loads'a'guff with no relevance at all.
Main thing is - keep all your documents on a seperate partition to windows, preferably an external drive you can unplug. then you can reinstall the OS when anything goes wrong, without compromising your own files. Don't be frightened, regardless of what MS say. It's only a bloody machine for gawd's sake.
Plenty of (usually) good advice on the web. But I repeat - don't be frightened, it's only software and you can wipe clean and start again very easily. So long as you keep your data on a seperate partition to the OS
Then just experimenme
nt!

Actually if Guest had read the thread they'd have seen I googled first, and if they'd read that link they'd have seen it was useless.
It does not provide an answer, it provides a discussion in which the answer is not present. *An* answer is there, which involves not having a background picture, so it doesn't address my question which is how to personalize my icon fonts without altering my background.

I make a ton of sense, if you read my posts.

But thanks, y'all.

After you do this, you can set your background image and the icon color will remain black.?

Yes, of course you "make a ton of sense"

All the best.

I sometimes prefer to say what to google rather than provide a single answer - especially if, as in this case, I'm not sure what the problem is. The questioner can then select a site that they can understand, or look at two or three and see if one is useful. Also, a particular 'answer' site may be unusable - I couldn't load one site posted without disabling my adblocker - which I declined to do.

But the trick to successful googling is knowing the jargon. If you don't know it's a 'drop shadow' then it's hard to search for how to remove it. Technically it's a 'text color' not a 'font color' - though enough people use 'font color' that you'll get an answer anyway. You may think this is an esoteric difference - and it is - but it may affect whether you'll find an answer to your question - or get answers to the wrong question!

Back to the Mrrzy's colo(u)rs. If the text colour is unreadable against the background there may be a way to get it to automatically select a contrasting colour so it works with any part of the background image - though I don't know how to do that in Win 10. I see there's something called 'accent color' but that's a bit of jargon I've not met. Or you should be able to introduce a 'text background color' so, for example, black text appears against a little white panel. 'Personalize' doesn't work on my system so I can't poke about in it. I tend to just move the icons to somewhere readable.

My impression is that the Win 10 user interface has been simplified compared to Win 7, which I think us a good thing - I prefer it. It probably still does all the things it did before but a lot of it is hidden. (If you can't find a setting try Windows key + X.) So it's only 'befuddling and annoying' when you know you ought to be able to do something but can't find it. And I never thought Windows was intuitive - you just get used so to it.

Yes, DaveRo, to just about everything you said.

I still have Window 7 at home, so it's befuddling and annoying trying to get into the heads of those pesky programmers who thought a change was as good as a holiday.

By intuitive, I mean that it's possible to figure it out with a bit of knowledge and a bit of thinking it through and a lot of natural progression from idea to result. It's a bit difficult to describe so I'll give an example.

I used to use a drawing programme called Deluxe Paint on a Commodore 64 - yes, I am THAT old! - and then bought a Microsoft computer and tried to use Corel Draw. Drawing and "painting" on the Commodore 64 was not a lot different to drawing and painting on paper. It all seemed intuitive. The ideas came and the means to achieve them were easy to figure out and easy to do.

Corel Draw on the other hand was like mentally pulling teeth while pulling my hair out at the same time.

Some years later, I had a bit of a go at the Mac drawing and graphics programmes a few times and it was like the Commodore. I didn't have to pick my mental state up out of the artistic or creative "zone" to try to work out how to achieve an effect or get an idea out of my head and into the computer. Mentally, the process was a lot like creating a painting in real life and I could lose myself in the process.

A bit off-topic perhaps, but that's what I meant by using the word "intuitive".

Helen

Thanks, Guest, but it didn't work - I tried a lot of colors but none of them made the font black. And you're right I hadn't seen the part about changing it back - perhaps had you not been snotty I might have paid more attention, but perhaps not.

Anyway, it didn't work. But thank you.

Hi Mrrzy,

After trying to change the font colour you might have to go back and re-do the drop shadows. It might be a simple fix. Fingers crossed!

I'll ask hubby tonight. He's a computer fixer by trade and he uses Windows 10 so he'll know.

Hi Mrrzy,

Hubby suggested this set of instructions. It might not be exactly what you are looking for because the icons can't be changed, BUT further down the page are some instructions on how to set up the colour scheme on a computer running Windows 7 and then saving it as a Theme, and then somehow transferring that theme to the Windows 10 computer.

I just read through it quickly but it might be useful. He says that you need to change the theme to high contrast to be able to adjust the colours, so don't be put off by the high contrast colour scheme without reading the whole page.

If this doesn't work, I'll get hubby back onto the problem.

Helen

Sorry, oops!

I created the link but just forgot to add it to my post.

How to change text and background color in Windows 10

Read the whole page because he explains why it is a roundabout process, having to change the theme to a high contrast theme and then that allows you to modify what you want. All the things you could do easily in older versions of Windows but which are inaccessible in Windows 10. Then he suggests an alternative, which is to create a theme in Windows 7, then share it so that you can transfer it to the Windows 10 computer.

Microsoft has created a complicated process for what used to be simple & easy and then smart cookies like the guy on that site have to think up what we call "workarounds" at my work, which are convoluted processes to achieve something which should be simple but the system won't let it happen. I don't get it. It's just annoying.

Try those instructions and see whether it solves the problem. If not, there is always plan B, and C and XYZ.

Helen
